DA:O - in my first play through especially but I still don't like watching that cutscene, Duncan's death at the start. Also, I had romanced Alistair but not enough to have him take the choice away from me. So his eulogy after my warden died had me in tears.

ME series - Mordin's death in ME3 was so unexpected and then Thane died (not completely unexpectedly but still sudden). Knocked me back a bit.

Notable others would be what happened to Cole at the end of Charmed season 4 and Elle in Heroes. I actually stopped watching the shows for a while after that. It's a good thing there is fanfiction. ;-)

Cole's first death (at the end of seson 4) I always found to be rather powerful and heartbreaking... even if it only ended up lasting for one episode.  lol

Personally, it was the second time they killed him off; halfway through season 5, that made me give up on the show.  Though, that was more out of sheer fan rage, and feeling that almost every other character on the show was absolutely deplorable.  (if you've ever seen it, Obscurus Lupa's review of season 5 is 100% spot on with my opinions regarding the characters  :P )

Off topic first ever played any of the XCOM games recent or otherwise?  Yeah every time one my carefully trained Vets bites it last night I lost A Major Ranked Assualt to a Cryssiled (XCOM  players will know that this means) When she died I let  out a NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! that would have made Luke Skywalker cover his ears.  As for DA Hawkes mum was bit of a shock I replayed it twice cos it looked like I could save it felt more like I failed a mission or missed a quest rather actual loss tho

I really hated in my first play thru of Heavy Rain when I died in that sadistic guy's house in the basement. A doctor, I think. Wow.

in ME I was surprised by the end of ME2 and the deaths that could occur there.

I was sad in my first playthrough of ME3 that I allowed Jack and the others at the school to die because I didn't get here fast enough.

Another one for Buffy's mum here - I've lost both my parents IRL, and I thought the way the show handled Joyce's death was incredible - actually very realistic, that sense of numbness and imagining turning back time to make everything ok certainly resonated with how I felt.

Most of the deaths in Harry potter - I thought Snape's was particularly sad, given the years of misunderstanding between himself and Harry; and Hedwig's because it was so unexpected. Also Fred Weasley - the Weasleys were such a close family, and the twins the most tightly knit of all of them *sniff*.

The little girl in Pan's Labyrinth - damn, I love that film, but I will never watch it again because it made me an emotional wreck.

In games, there have been a few I've found particularly affecting - Mona Sax in Max Payne 2. Poor Max had been through such a lot already, seemed like things were finally on the up for him, then ... ugh. Anderson in ME3 - man, I thought I'd blubbed when Mordin died, but I found Anderson's death scene even worse. Ser Jory in Origins - so sad the way he panicked and was then killed by Duncan. I mean, I knew there was no chance of that happening to my PC, but I thought that scene did a really good job of bringing home the gravity of the Joining. Lee in TWD, and Kenny's son! Jeez, it's like some games are trying to rip my heart out (zombie pun not intended) :crying:

Folks have listed Joyce Summers & Tara from Buffy.  I think for me what was so shocking about them both, was that there was nothing supernatural about them.  Tara's in particular was from a gunshot - all too common in the real world, but unheard of in the Buffy-verse.  That and the fact that she died on my birthday...talk about a bummer. Oh, and Anya was just a big 'Nooooooooo!'  Also Fred in Angel...I was certain they would find a cure - curses, Joss Whedon!!!

And yes, in DAO when my casteless dwarf was going to sacrifice herself - that harpy was NOT getting her hands on my man! - and then Alistair had to go and be so stupidly selfless* ...*sniffles...what? I have allergies

Not for fake characters that aren't real I don't.

You've never teared up watching a movie or a tv show or reading a book?  Do you have kids, a pet, someone you love?

No tears for Bambi, Old Yeller, Marley & Me, Ghost, Ordinary People, Armageddon, ET, Sophie's Choice, Beaches, Grave of Fireflies, Schindler's List, or UP?  My husband teared up for some of these, all fictional characters.  Either he thought of his daughter, granddaughter, his first hunting dog or in the case of UP, he thought of us and how he would feel if I weren't here.

A really good video game can pull out those feelings the same way a book or movie does.  IMO, BioWare is good at it.  They are the only game developer that has ever brought tears to my eyes.   Not just tears of sadness, but tears of rage and happiness.

When Alistair surprised me and died saving the warden.

DA2 the first time I couldn't save mother I teared up a little.

ME Virmire still makes me tear up no matter who dies and the first time I played it took a few minuets to decide what to do.

Me2 Jack died saving Miranda who had the biotic shield, the look on  her face made me teary.  Also changed my view of Jack.

Yes all 3 of the ME endings, made me cry tears of anger.

Mordin and Thane both made me tear up, but I liked the way their story was done.

Yes, Wash in Firefly

End of movie, Summersby

Probably others.

I wasn't surprised by the deaths but that doesn't mean they didn't affect me.  Mordin in ME3 caused tears, many many tears, and I wasn't even the biggest Mordin fan. I liked him but man that death, suddenly I loved him.  Thane's death in ME3 was great but I didn't get too emotional.  I was glad he was able to go out doing something heroic and good instead of suffocating to death.

I hope scenes (and not just death scenes) in DA:I will shake me just as much.  The one thing ME had going for it was that many of the characters had been around for 2 games and it felt like a culmination of everything you and your digital friends had been working towards.  Can't wait to see what DA:I offers!

There's been a lot actually when I think about it, but the two nearest and dearest are Shadow of the Colossus and Journey. If you've played them you'll know what I mean, too much feelz :(

Shepard's death is the only one that comes to mind, while it didn't knock the wind out of me I was kind of upset for a while.

Too many to mention.  In Wizards First Rule the death of Denna.  In ME1: The one time Ash killed Wrex forever colored my perception of her. And I cried because I had forgotten that was possible I had to restart the entire game and then on one playthru Alistair killed the archdemon and I as a wreck of tears and snot. But no character death ever got to me the way Marcus Coles death got to me in Babylon 5 due in large part to 3 seasons of watching his unrequited love for Ivonava to grow and only slowly being reciprocated until finally ending before being allowed to flower completely.

http://youtu.be/i3Oophp4o3c?t=5m49s

And then Sheridan's death in Sleeping in light but that entire episode tore me a new one.

In Startrek TNG Data tried to save his "Daughter" and that always makes me an emotional hot mess.  So yeah the death of fictional characters often gets to me when it's done right and improves the story and seems in context for the universe, the charaters, and the story being told.

As for the end of ME3... that is a dead horse I am done beating suffice to say those tears were just angry and disgusted.

They did not down played it. They just haven't shown it yet.

Unlikely. We've already progressed from the "Gregor suffering in excruciating pain" to the "Qyburn's experiments" phase. It's very likely we won't even see Gregor again until he's complete. If there was a point to explain just how much pain Oberyn left him in, that scene with Cercei was it.

Played XCOM for the first time about a month ago. Probably one of my favorite modern games of all time.

Always a hard hit when one of your troopers kicks the bucket.  :(

Man, if anyone wants to have crazy emotional breakdowns, they should play The Walking Dead game, if you haven't already. I rarely cry during books, shows, games, etc. but this game wrecked me.

I liked it a lot more than The Walking Dead show.

One of the more shocking death in videogames was Kat from Halo Reach ( at least for me). Shot through the head in mid sentense. And pretty much the whole Noble Team death was hard for me.

This. Kat getting sniped was a complete surprise to me. I suspected everyone in Reach was going to die (surprised Jun made it out btw), but that one was pretty shocking.

Shepard in ME3. I grew so attached to my Shepard that even in spite of the leaks and spoilers I had hoped there was another way to save her or ensure a happy ending. Bittersweet was about the best that could be achieved.

Leandra's death always bothers me in DA2. I actually liked her character. Now if that were Gamlen getting sacrificed, probably wouldn't feel as much.

I forgot my family at the beginning of DA:O.  I think I was more upset though.  When I saw my nephew and Sister-in-Law I was seriously yelling when I get my hands on Arl Howe I'm going to kill him.  I was sad when I had to leave my parents and knew they died.

I really wish people who played that Origin would have gotten a special encounter with Arl Howe, with extended dialogue.

Unfortunately when I first played DA I got into to due to watching my friend play and got spoiled on some of the more shocking bits. Only death that surprised me was Mordins. Even games like the walking dead doesn't shock me since there's already a strong feeling people are going to die.

When Shepard suffered the green death I was so depressed I bought heaps of chocolate and watched the entire Pride & Predudice mini-series. Thank God for the Happy Ending Mod; it did for ME3 what X-Men: Days of Future Past did for the horror that was X-Men: The Last Stand.

The only other character death that cut me up was Spike. Spike ruled, WHY DID HE HAVE TO DIE
