Has a character death ever knocked the wind out of you?

Shepard's death frustrated, depressed, and infuriated me, but it wasn't well done and therefore it didn't emotionally tear me apart like Lee's (TWD) did. It felt like "rocks fall everyone dies" so they wouldn't have people asking them to continue the story or something. Leandra's death was poorly done also. It was weird and anime-like in concept and not well executed. I feel like in that case they just said "well everyone's got a mother so they'll be sad out of empathy" and then didn't bother to flesh out her character or Hawke's relationship with her or make you care at all.

I dunno about knocking the wind out of me, since I'm generally desensitized to character death in general, but I did not expect so many seemingly important characters to bite the big one in DA:O in the very beginning of the game.

I'm trying to think of some characters that made me sad, only Duncan comes to mind and it was too early in the game for us to care about him. ME3 has some good deaths, like Miranda's, but I've never got the scene in my playthroughs so the drama is pretty much lost on me. And others are too heroic, so feeling sad makes them a disservice.

Lee from The Walking Dead.

That goodbye with Clem gave me the shoulder- shaking cries. I lost my **** and still haven't found it.

And Soap MacTavish. For reasons.

Unlikely. We've already progressed from the "Gregor suffering in excruciating pain" to the "Qyburn's experiments" phase. It's very likely we won't even see Gregor again until he's complete. If there was a point to explain just how much pain Oberyn left him in, that scene with Cercei was it.

Nah, It's just starting. Their's gong to be more.

None in the DA series have. The closest I think would have been Papa and Mama Cousland. If Anders' douchery at the end of DA2 counts then that too. It was like a punch to the gut.

The ME series had the Virmire decision as well as having Mordin die unexpectedly on me in the Suicide Mission. That coffin at the end was just too much. I had got complete Squad Loyalty and upgraded the ship but he went down, holding the line.  :crying:

For me, it really depends on what you call "getting the wind knocked out of you," figuratively. I've been sad and/or disappointed when characters die, but I've never felt winded by it.

In a Bioware game? Legion got to me the most especially with what EDI says after, Mordin also got to me. Jade Empire Sagacious Zu was another, plus many others Bioware is great at doing it making a death get to you in a game.

Quite a few in non Bioware games as well Bioshock 1 good ending.

(spoilers ahead kind of for Bioshock Infinite)

Bioshock Infinite the ending i was depressed for days after got to me bad i think cause Booker didn't fight at the end just accepted it. And i could empathize with the character. After all that after all he caused to just accept what was being done to him.

Cole's first death (at the end of seson 4) I always found to be rather powerful and heartbreaking... even if it only ended up lasting for one episode.  lol

Personally, it was the second time they killed him off; halfway through season 5, that made me give up on the show.  Though, that was more out of sheer fan rage, and feeling that almost every other character on the show was absolutely deplorable.  (if you've ever seen it, Obscurus Lupa's review of season 5 is 100% spot on with my opinions regarding the characters  :P )

That it only lasted one episode made it even worse, in my opinion. I mean, they did the build up, made the scene, as you said, powerful and then bring Cole back the very next episode. Come on.

I'll take a look at that review you mentioned soon. You've made me curious. ;)

Winter is coming.

Any day now.

Maybe in another 6 books!  Still another 500 irrelevant and ancillary characters to milk till we have to worry about actually moving the main story arcs forward.  Turning into WOT all over again.

To answer the OP: I don't think so?  Maybe when I was a little kid, I don't really attach much emotion to fictional characters...as characters anyways.  I tend to see them as just extensions or foundations to whatever particular theme I interpret the creator intends for them to represent. I get disappointed sometimes that I won't get to see that theme explored anymore in the work if a character dies, but that's about it.  If it's a character that the creator just added or killed off for the purpose of getting an emotional response, they usually don't have enough going on for them to make me care in the first place.

Off-topic for a sec:

This is why I stopped reading the books after AFFC and just watch the show now. At least with the show I know for certain they can't afford to drag it out.

I wouldn't mind a WoT HBO series though. With every ounce of filler cut out, I think they could wrap it up in seven seasons.

Gandalf (when I first read the books I was stunned and sad for a awhile until book 2. I still get water-eyed when I watch that scene in the movies though.)

Lem's death from The Shield. (F**K YOU SHANE!!!!!)

Duncan was pretty shocking.

In ME1 having to choose between Ash and Kadain was actually pretty hard and I just sat there for like 15 minutes staring at my screen after that.

Legion and Mordin :'(

Ghost and Roach from MW2 was kinda sad not really shocking but sad.

And I feel like the only person who likes the Desmond stuff from AC, but in AC:Brotherhood Lucy's death was pretty shocking to me.

Lastly Eddard from GoT was pretty dang gut wrenching when reading his final moments.

In video games no, though I'll admit that I never finished my initial female mage run in Origins after I learned that Alistair was going to sacrifice himself (did the DR in subsequent playthroughs) and I almost wish I hadn't found out as I'm not sure how I would have reacted. Fiction has only led to tears for me on three occasions, all in childhood, but the character deaths that have gotten me the closest would probably be a couple from LOST due to its damn scoring and the entirety of Buffy's "The Body". I mean, that opening scene, come on. Pure genius, and Sarah Michelle Gellar (as well as Katherine Sutherland) kill it. If it weren't so sudden, Anya might have gotten me there, as she was by far my favourite character on that show.

And yet for every time that someone that brings up GoT, I can not for the life of me remember a time being moved by any particular character death, perhaps because I expect it for all of them. Harry Potter books are the only novels that have moved me to having to keep control of myself, though those moments almost never revolved around a character death.

Probably way back in my first playthrough of ME 1.  Saving either Ash or Kaidan as one of them was going to die no way around it.  Also Wrex died on that mission (first playthrough ever so I didn't know what I was doing).  So you yeah Virmire first time ever threw me for a loop.  Other than that nothing that has happened in Dragon Age has been too shocking.  Even though Ostagar had us losing both Duncan and Cailan something had to happen to set up the rest of the game.

Mordin. Thane even though I saw it a mile a way.

Legion....

tumblr_m42c1iVDHx1rpyufwo1_500.gif

Wynne in the books.

Anders because I could not save him, I had to kill him my self, and it was the only way to save him.

As much as I like pinokio story template, and Legion. I can't take his death seriously, because it still don't make no sense, no mater how much feels legion have his mind just data and can be copy-paste. Even Shepard come on, you  god like AI with army of synthetic-organic spaceships and you can't take sample of Shepards DNA or scan brain without vaporizing flesh, well no wonder reapers full of bugs.

I have much feels then Mordin die. But best was. One piece Merry, come on I cry over ship you would understend if watched.
