Has a character death ever knocked the wind out of you?

The most recent time that a character death affected me was when I recently replaying XCOM:  Enemy Within.  It has permadeath for the squad members and I was playing it on a harder difficulty with the autosave feature on.  I had a really kickass soldier who I loved.  She was a killer:  a fully upgraded psionic medic who had an amazing aim attribute; by far my favorite character.  Well, I was approaching the end game and was getting a bit "comfortable".  I just made a mistake of moving her just too far and she attracted several enemies.  In one turn, she went from full health to dead (not even wounded....dead).  I was gutted and turned the game off.  In fact, I started a whole new game because I was so upset that I lost her that I didn't want that story to go on without her.  It feels silly because she was a randomly generated soldier.  RIP, Denisha "Missionary" Hangawa........

I had a very similar experience playing Enemy Within as well; although I wasn't playing with Iron Man mode on (too intense for me  ).

Anyway, I had turned on the option that randomizes your soldiers abilities when they are promoted, an assault can get the improved aim of snipers, a heavy could receive the movement bonuses of an assault, etc. And I had a support her call sign was Combo and she rocked. Almost every shot she made was at 85%+ chance to hit and she could shoot twice in a single round. She had the highest resistance to psionics, she was the best psychic warrior, she was genetically modified, and she had every single medal that you could award your troops.

I was playing a form of hot-seat campaign co-op with my brother (I really wish the X-COM had co-op a la Gladius) wherein we would swap the controller back and forth, each of us controlling a certain amount of of Soldiers in the squad. My brother had control of Combo, a sniper, as well as the DLC heavy (forget his name), and I had control over another support with the call sign of 'Gypsy' (who I made into a MEC trooper) a hover SHIV and an assault. Now I know what your thinking, that my brother made an idiot mistake, and got Combo as well as half of my squad killed, but you would be wrong. We both are veterans of RPGs and we were both well aware of the harshness of the X-COM games.

Playing co-operativly, my brother and I got to the final mission aboard the alien mothership, his primary character being Combo and mine being the MEC trooper Gypsy. Covering each other, and having many close calls and numerous high five moments, we finally arrived at X-COM: Enemy Within's final boss. The battle was intense but we managed to pull through without any casualties, and we each congratulated the other on a job well done, and then the post game cutscene played.

I had played X-COM: Enemy Unknown prior, so I knew that the solider you choose to activate the alien machine is the one who must sacrifice their life to save the Earth from the imploding alien mothership. But the solider I used in Enemy Unknown was some random operative, one who had the best stats; in Enemy Within, that solider was Combo. As the cutscene played out my brother and I watched as Combo approached the control console to send the ship out of the atmosphere, and as luck would have it, my MEC Trooper Gypsy was the one that tried to run over to stop my brother's Combo from sacrificing herself. It was heartbreaking to watch as (essentially) my brother's character for over 30 hours had to sacrifice her life, and that my character was unable to help.  :crying:

It's funny how two completely generic soldiers could generate such attachment and heartbreak.

A few not many.

Biggest impact was Shepard in synthesis ending, it wrecked me, sobbed like a baby and still tear up from time to time about it.

So many, and all from Bioware.

Wynne in the novels. I've liked her since first time I met her in Ostagar. She escaped death once, I was hoping she would again, so that maybe I'd be able to meet her in Inquisition. But apparently not. Now I just hope Inquisition gives me the chance to visit her grave.

Everyone in Cousland Castle from human noble origins. I started playing not knowing what the game is going to be like (at all), so I was actually looking forward to ruling Highever and having good relationships with everyone. Then everyone died.

Bethany in DA2 during the deep roads expedition. I didn't bring Anders. It was horrifying. I reloaded the save. And then, Hawke's mom died horribly. I reloaded the save to Act 1, trying to see if I could somehow avert the death. Nope. Can't. Hawke turned from a clown to an aggresive ass.

Then the Virmire victim from ME, mainly cos I didn't see it coming. After all, Shepard seemed undefeated until that moment (to me anyways).

The only two were Jenkins at the beginning of ME1 and Mhari in Awakening. I liked both characters

Liberty Prime.... ok, just kidding, still, pretty sad to see him get wasted.

Strangely, no death scene ever got me in an Bioware game, I mean, some made me feel sad, but I never cried for them, nor felt that emptyness that consumes your entire body.

The only moment in an Bioware game were I legitimately cried was when I played with my colonist femshep, and when she had to deal with Talitha, and she throws the line: "It hurts... when I remember me... but she wants to remember" I was a mess when it was all over.

In Dragon Age Origins......Duncan, the look on his face when he looks around the battlefield.....but the feels for his death was with the CE I played where she lept at the chance to get out of the alienage. Other characters I played I didn't get feels from seeing Duncan die.

Maybe if I had played a character that had let Alistair take the killing blow with the Archdemon....and NOT been like "Ha! Go to your death you sucker! Better you than Me!" Maybe then he would be on the list.....especially if romanced.

In Dragon Age 2, only the first time I played and had romanced Anders and then knifed him. That was sad.

But there's not a lot of companions dying in DA games that I feel really badly about.

Now Mass Effect....Mordin always brings me to tears (the renegade option there.....boxes of kleenexes needed). Legion always makes me misty eyed (Geth over Quarians always....even if I do pick destroy).

None, Anderson in ME3 probably came closest and maybe Thanes death but even those came no where near close enough to knocking the wind out of me. The ones who on the other hand made me the most annoyed and angry were prominently from DA2 and included many of the characters in that game from Orsino and Meredith to Anders and Merrill, also Hawke him/herself.

With regard to non-Bioware games there has been many moments which had sad effect on me and to give one example such would be when Isara died in Valkyria Chronicles at her funeral scene. If do not know what one I refer to here is a link to the scene however it may not have much effect without playing the game and understanding the context of it or the personality and influence of Isara herself leading up to that point.

Mordin and Shepard. Oh and Legion, I also cried when I thought Grunt was dead...

Nothing comes to mind in a Bioware game, but the death at the end of the most recent episode of The Walking Dead Season Two (the game, not the show) shocked me so much I accidentally let the timer of the final decision run out without making a decision.

These got me to cry:

Aeris - FF7. I was young at the time.

The Walking Dead TV Show - Sophia

The Last of Us - Intro

X-Men Days of Future Past - all future scenes (I've been following X-men since the 90s cartoon and am attached to these characters)

FFX - Tidus disappearing

ME3 - Thessia was depressing. Samara. She was my favorite. Thankfully she lived, but it scared the hell outta me.

Borderlands 2 - Bloodwing/Roland

FF13 - Fang/Vanille

I get tear jerked all the time by character deaths in fiction.

As far as games are concerned, and Bioware in particular, Legion's death in ME3 was particularly hard.

Nothing in DA so far. Thane's death really blew me away. Mordin. Liara's home planet. The Virmire choice in ME1 was really good.

Aeris in Final Fantasy 7 made me stop and just stream tears. The entirety of Heavy Rain was like edge of the abyss, the ending of Beyond: Two Souls was great. Xenogears had a great moment.

edit: X-COM yeah. Just the permanence of Ironman mode. It was tough when my entire A team was wiped out well into the game, but it was just one major notation in the whole tragi-heroic randomly generated opera. That's a great game.

In comics, there's a lot more, mainly various X-Men. That's kind of my home modern mythology that I'm most attached to and the family of characters I grew up with. Then there are things that just ****** me off and frustrate, where somebody's just trying too hard to make their name and they get cute with it. That's why I haven't really been bothered too much about being out of the comics loop the last few years. That's also kind of what my gut reaction was to the ending that shall not be named. Basically, if it really exists in service to the story, it can be really powerful. If it seems like an ego trip or a marketing stunt, it can be really powerfully repulsive. Both stunning in different ways I guess.

(Major) Character deaths in games are almost always too hammy for my taste, plus in at least some cases I'm sitting there going "BUT I HAVE A RESURRECTION SCROLL RIGHT HERE . . ."

Caridin's fate made me sad in Origins, though, and the fate of Hespith and Laryn was pretty horrific.

Nothing in Dragon Age yet! But there have been deaths from my favourite games and tv shows that have affected me quite a lot:

Mass Effect 3 - Legion, Mordin and Thane (and the Extended Cut endings, I really liked them)

The Walking Dead Game - Carley, Lee and Omid

The Walking Dead TV Show - Andrea (Never understood why so many people hated her. She was different to the comic version but I liked her)

Lost - Sun, Jin and Juliet

Game of Thrones - Catelyn and Robb

Only one really worth mentioning as it's one of the rare times a character death made me cry.

Mordin. I stopped playing for a few days because of this, he is my favorite ME character, but I feel like his arc was done so well through out both games and it felt complete. One of the reasons why I'm exited that Patrick Weekes is working on DA now.

You've never teared up watching a movie or a tv show or reading a book?  Do you have kids, a pet, someone you love?

No tears for Bambi, Old Yeller, Marley & Me, Ghost, Ordinary People, Armageddon, ET, Sophie's Choice, Beaches, Grave of Fireflies, Schindler's List, or UP?  My husband teared up for some of these, all fictional characters.  Either he thought of his daughter, granddaughter, his first hunting dog or in the case of UP, he thought of us and how he would feel if I weren't here.

A really good video game can pull out those feelings the same way a book or movie does.  IMO, BioWare is good at it.  They are the only game developer that has ever brought tears to my eyes.   Not just tears of sadness, but tears of rage and happiness.

I see no reason to cry because a bunch of fake things die in a book or video game.

It's a lot more fun when you pretend that it is real.

The Red Wedding in A Storm of Swords. Aeris Gainsborough in Final Fantasy VII. Leandra dying in DA2 didn't really knock the wind out of me per se, but I found it very sad. What knocked the wind out of me was executing Anders. I was so disappointed (in the best way).

Edit: How on earth could I forget Duncan and Cailain's death at Ostagar. For shame. And Bethany or Carver killed by the ogre. ;_;

That Grunt scene in ME3 made me seriously panic that I picked the wrong choice. I was seriously shouting, "OH NO NOT GRUNT! NOT MY TEST TUBE SUPER SOLDIER BABY!" Mordin was another sad scene. And Duncan's death at Ostagar when he looks up at the lit tower always gets me. Tali's death/suicide in ME3 was also nicely done and made me feel pretty awful. (It was my first playthrough and I didn't do one of the missions before taking on the reaper which regardless of me covering everything else set the death flag. There other death scenes from other games not made by Bioware that get me as well, like the perfect good ending of Bioshock 2, I just don't feel like listing them all)

1st place bar none.

Oberyn in game of thrones completely wrecked me emotionally.

2nd place

Leliana and Wynne in DA:O (Did it - but in a positive way). The fact that these characters were so true to their personality that they actually tried to kill me and died in the process for defiling the ashes of Andraste - gave me a respect for Bioware that will never diminnish.

3rd place

Raziel choosing to sacrifice himself to help Cain kill the elder god in the soul reaver universe.
