After Gaider's reassurances, I'm reserving judgement on the gender imbalance until we actually get to play the game and see whether it's true that there is a more even split across the game as a whole.

But it still kind of sucks that we only get one possible all-female party, and probably every female party member will be a romance option.

Unless the last two LIs are both male but I highly doubt that's going to happen.

I do not share the concern. In an industry that that has an over-representation of male characters up the wazoo, Bioware is and has been making a genuine effort to have and create fully realized and well-developed female and minority characters.

I do find it funny that Bioware gets criticized from both sides. One side is saying Bioware's too PC and hates straight male characters. The other side says they don't write enough female characters and hates bisexuals. I'm aware that it's not that binary, but still.

I don't think there's much of an argument here to be frank. If we stack the important female characters up against important male characters, you get:

Female

Morrigan

Leliana

Josephine

Cassandra

Sera

Vivienne

Male:

Cullen

Blackwall

Iron Bull

Solas

Varric

Cole

Dorian

That's 6/7. Okay, so I'm guessing about Morrigan. Possibly 5/7. And DG points out that there will be other major players who are female.

I think we should wait to criticize content until after the game actually releases. Everything that takes place now is just speculation.

Women have played important roles throughout Dragon Age- many in positions of importance and authority.  Perhaps there are not as many female companions, but I must say, the ones I have seen are interesting, and you could conceivable run the game in an all lady party.  Seems pretty good to me.

I'm totally down for lots of hot guys everywhere... *COUGHS* I mean uh... yea we need more ladies!

Joking aside, I don't really see it being any sort of issue. There are PLENTY of  awesome ladies in the DA universe. If this time I get extra male meat companions, then I'll happily take it. ;)

I knew well before Gaider stated it officially that they were taking non-companion/advisers into consideration. Given that people have a skewed perception of how many women are present in a group (I think it's been proven that people consider a crowd that is 17% female to be 50%, and anything over 30% to be predominately female), I imagine people are going to be complaining as it is. With Leliana and Josephine functioning in roles that can't be assigned to another character (the way a female companion can be exchanged for a male equivalent), and with a host of other high profile female characters almost guaranteed to be present (and presented as equals or betters of their male counterparts), we'll be hearing a lot about how the DA franchise has gone full feminist/is pandering to female fans.

[however, to clarify, the companion ratio is frustrating. personally, i would have loved for blackwall to have been a female dwarf]

Why would advisors count...?  And including Morrigan, whose role we don't even know yet?  Huh?  This is about party members, not who hangs out at the base while we're off getting bloody.

That's my main problem with the companion ratio.

Yes, the DA universe has women in positions of influence, and that's as it should be.  But we will be spending most of our time in-game choosing a team from among our companions, and going off achieving things. And two-thirds of our pool to choose from is male.  No getting around it.  Putting another Anora in the story is not the same as putting in another Aveline who'll always have our back.  Having women working in the background, giving you goals or needing your help (or worse, waiting for you to impress them) is not the same as having them on the front lines with you, working and bantering and helping.

The universe of DA may be egalitarian, but this game is indeed a bit heavy on the sausage.

That's very true.  I couldn't help myself, I'm sorry.

Well maybe you should help yourself and the rest of the petulant children that drag that out every time they want to feel witty.

Other then this being a different group making the game how well does your critisim hold up against every other BIoWare game that's been put out? Not well at all.

Shitty endings happen get over it for fucks sake.

As for the OP. Who cares? Other then someone insecure with themselves.

To me the solution was simple.  If Iron Bull had been female it would've solved everything all at once.  For years tons of folks have wanted to have a female Qunari in the game, while on the other hand we'd had tons of male qunari and didn't need one more, just like we didn't need a sixth male character in the party.  That would've solved everything, and would've made Iron Bull's character a lot cooler as well.  So solutions to all problems in a way that makes the game a lot more fun, a win win!  Too bad they didn't think of it in time :) .

I guess there is a little reason to be concerned.

But since our party will only have 4 members (one of them is us), it's not like we'll be seeing the other companions that much. We can make our party a single gender or evenly balanced.

I had much the same feelings as you did, OP.  Even made some long posts about the subject.  This is what DG said about it:

My reply to DG's quoted response would basically be word for word what Vian has said.  ^_^ Having prominent female characters sprinkled throughout the world is not the same as having female characters in your actual party.

Also, the fact that the team just so happened to think that more male companion characters were interesting as opposed to female companions points to a very awkward underlying social issue.

Yeah, like that went SO well last time.

It was over two years ago... and I didn't even find the ending to be particularly offensive. Sue me.
Frankly, I'm glad BioWare stuck to their guns. But it's hardly fair to use Mass Effect's ending (regardless of how you perceive it) against the Dragon Age team.

As for the OP, when it comes to companions, males outnumber the females. When it comes to advisors, females outnumber the males. It's also worth noting that Dragon Age is filled with prominent and important female characters. I cannot see Inquisition being any different.

Mmmm. Sausages. I like them on barbecue. With some potatoes and some fresh vegetables like tomatoes and stuff. Very yummy.

Or cooked, in a nice stew. That's pretty yummy too.

given the context clue, it seems to mean the main character, but which two specific words?

So....I'm a petulant child for disliking an ending now?   Your seething vitriol makes you seem like the insecure one here.  Not the OP.

I legitimately don't understand why anyone cares about this. I feel like only looking at a character's gender and nothing else is shallow, and does disservice to them.

There is an offset to the number of female companions, in that 2 out of 3 advisors are female.   So leaving out the Inquisitor, the Inquisition inner circle comprises 7 males and 5 females.    Both Morrigan and Leliana are involved with the story and the latter does almost become an extra party member in the demo we have seen.

On the whole, most of the male characters have story reasons for being that gender.    Cole was already a character in Asunder, Varric was returning from DA2, Dorian suffers in his home culture from being gay, Iron Bull was assigned to his role by the Qun (who have specific ideas about which gender is suitable for each job).    If Solas wasn't male, then there would be no male elf companion character.    That leaves Blackwall.    May be he could have been female - we won't know until he tells us his history.

I must admit that I'm more disappointed about representation among the races.    With the exception of Sera, all the female companions and advisors are human.    The majority of romances that we currently know of for either gender are also human.
