maybe he was just in an untainted part of the deep roads.
I mean, if the taint is really that easy to pick up wouldn't Leliana or Sten or any of the others pick it up from being in the deep roads killing darkspawn.
Or Branka, how many years did she spend down there, and she was more than a little half crazy, but she wasn't tainted.
I think the taint is harder to catch than we're lead to believe.

It's unknown at this point. Mysteries seem to surround Sandal. Some dialogue from the corrupted carta members in "Legacy" can be overheard to suggest that Sandal is the illegitimate son of an Aeducan. He mentions seeing a "scary lady" in Act III who might be Flemeth, although his father believes it's simply nightmares. Aside from his enchantments and "not enchantment" stunts (like freezing the Ogre in the primeval thaig), he seems to be aware of what will happen in Inquisition, given his prophecy: "One day the magic will come back. All of it. Everyone will be just like they were. The shadows will part, and the skies will open wide. When he rises, everyone will see."

If sandal actually is related to the royals it had I be through his mother, right? Since if his same gender parent was royal he would be too. Maybe his dad was lower caste trying to move up in the world but ended up with a kid that couldn't do that.
