Sexual Orientation:

Going all the way back to KOTOR through Dragon Age 2, all of my male characters romanced female characters. All of my female characters romanced other female characters when given the option. Rarely have I ever had my female character romance another male character and I never had my male characters romance another male. As a male, I have no problems playing as a female PC because I always make her look sexually appealing to me so that it isn't that hard having to see her face 70% of the game and hear her voice. However, I do feel weird when I play as a female PC and try to romance another male character.....it just feels.....as if I am actively hitting on another male. Even though my PC is female, I am still male so I do not like having to pursue another male or another male making advances towards me. This is why my female Shepard always romanced Liara and one of my female Hawke romanced Merrill. Just recently I played a female Hawke who romanced Fenris and needless to say, it felt awkward and not natural. This was the same when I romanced Alistar with my female noble rogue in Origins.

With that being said, I do not know the direction I will take when it comes to having a romance for my female Qunari rogue who will have a ruthless type of personality. I have planned for her to romance Vivi as Sera will be romanced by my female elf mage, Scribbles will be romanced by my qunari male warrior, and Cassandra by my male human rogue. I want each playthrough to be unique including the romances but I do not know if I pull it off again if Vivi is race gated/straight which would mean that my female Qunari will have to romance a male NPC (Cullen) and the last time I did so felt really forced on my part and uncomfortable.

Race:

To be blunt, I have came to the conclusion that ALL 4 of my Inquisitors will have dark skin. They may not be fully "black" as in having distinct African features, but they definitely will NOT be white. Yes, call me racist but I am just burnt out on playing as the white guy or white gal in videogames so when given the chance to create a look of my own, I will create a look that isn't the "standard" or "genric". My Elf, both Qunari, and human will have brown skin. I am sort of worried about how that will play out with them cause I do not want to create a problem where my character has a certain skin tone but when they meet a family member, they share another "look" like in Origins where the human noble/dwarf commoner and noble stories featured family members of a set skin tone. So if there are family members of the Inquisitor shown, I hope they adapt to the skin tone of my PC like in Dragon Age 2. Again, I might be labeled as racist but you have to look at it from my perspective. As a black male, I would like to relate to my characters sometimes, which is why I am really looking forward to this new Black Captain America.

Identity:

Yes, I am a human, but when given the chance in these fantasy/sci-fi games, I ALWAYS play the non-humans. In fact, of my 4 Inquisitors, only 1 of them will be human while 1 is an Elf and the other two are Qunari. I wanted to play as a Dwarf but since he/she will be a surface dwarf, I have to interest in playing with that type of Dwarf who is so disconnected from Dwarven culture. I might as well be a human if I am going to be a surface dwarf. Hell, even Varric in DA2 seemed more like a short human than a dwarf with who has a respect for dwarven history, culture, and religion. But yeah, I am not going to go the "standard" route like most people here will do and play as a human most of the time. In Alien: Isolation, Far Cry 4, Batman Arkham Knight, and Watchdogs I am human. So why would I choose to be human again in a videogame that offers me other choices? Personally, I always found it more interesting and exotic to "explore" other cultures. Playing as the Dalish in Origins or a Dwarf in was far more rewarding that the a-standard human noble.

With all that being said, where do you stand on such issues?

1) As a heterosexual player, do you feel comfortable having your PC who is not your sex, romance a NPC who is your sex. Like me as a male playing as a female PC who romances a male NPC. Or a heterosexual female who plays as a male PC, but romances a female NPC.

2) As a homosexual player, do you feel comfortable having your PC who is your sex, romance a NPC who is of opposite sex?

3) As a male, do you feel comfortable playing as a female character? As a female, do you feel comfortable playing as a male character?

4) If you are white, do you ever create characters that out right do not look "white" but rather black, asian, hispanic, or multi-racial? Or do you just stick with white?

5) If you are not white, do you normally try to create characters who match your racial identity? Or do you create a range of races?

6) Will you be comfortable romancing Vivenne if you are a white male? Do you even find Vivienne attractive? I do and I like how Bioware decided to create a black female with strong African features instead of the typical European looking female coated in brown skin.

7) Will the majority of your Inquisitors be human? How hard or easy is it to play as an Elf or Dwarf  (and now Qunari)?

I'm really sorry my attention span is equal to that of a wild squirrels. It looks like you put a lot of thought into this, but I only read the first two paragraphs.... anyway i will say that you are definitely not alone in this feeling

It feels really awkward pursuing a romance with one of the male characters, as I am a straight male. I can barely even play as a female just because i'm male

1. Nope.

2. (Skipped)

3. Yep.

4. Nope, well not intentionally. I created a Slavic Russian Character in Mass Effect, played him into Mass Effect 2 in which he looked like Vladimir Mashkov (looks almost exactly like Niko from GTA4) but then suddenly in Mass Effect 3 he became a pale Hispanic, didn't mind.

5. (Skipped)

6. I'm uncomfortable romancing any mages and I have different tastes.

7. Pretty much, but I love Dwarves.

Is this BSN?  ;)

What the hell, I'll bite!

2.)  If there is a m/m option in the game, I'll almost never do any other options.  Occasionally, I'll do a f/f option when I do a female playthrough.  I've only done three "straight" romances ever:  Carth, Jacob (because I really wanted to get the priiiiize), and Alistair (to experience the getting dumped because I'm not a human storyline).  In DA 2 and ME 3, where I had more than one m/m romance option, I have never done anything else.

3.)  I will play female characters, especially in games without romances.  Half of my SWTOR characters are female.  My "main" character in Skyrim is a female.

4.)  If I'm playing a male character, I tend to make them pretty pale (since I'm almost translucent myself).  Almost ever female character I make is either dark skinned with black hair or very pale and red-haired.

6.)  I am desperately hoping that Vivienne is a f/f option because I want to do a female playthrough and she is the only female that I'm even remotely interested in.  I just hope she's not gated against both dwarves and qunari, because then I'm out of luck.

7.)  If given an option, I will always choose a non-human/non-elf character.  I will play dwarves, orcs, gnomes, hobbits/halflings, and, now, qunari.  My ME 3 multiplayer characters were almost all asari, salarian, or volus.  All eight of my SWTOR characters are non-humans (half of them are twi'lek).

First off, you are not racist in the slightest. There's nothing wrong with wanting representation.

Secondly, I think a lot of the discomfort felt by straight people (particularly men) when it comes to romancing genders they're not interested in has to do with conditioned homophobia/sexism. That's not to say that you are being actively homophobic or sexist, just that society says being female = bad, being with a man = being female, therefore, being with a man = bad. Of course, it's a great deal more complicated than that, but that's my overall take on it.

Thirdly, even though I'm bi, I never romance men as women or women as men, because I'm surrounded enough by heterosexuality as it is, and I like to take breaks from it. EDIT: More specifically, I'm surrounded by heteronormativity and erasure.

Finally, Vivienne is a beautiful goddess, and I only wish she wasn't pro-Circle.

No, as a male homosexual player I do not feel uncomfortable having my male character romancing a female. Honestly using the word 'uncomfortable' is a little bit offensive. I'm sure you had no intentions of that, but there's a difference between being 'uncomfortable' implying a casual homophobia and not feeling it on a personal level/connecting with it. It's only recently in games I've been able to express my own sexuality through my character, so growing up with only straight options isn't uncomfortable for me. I just can't connect with it.

And basically the same with all the other options - none of them make me feel uncomfortable if I was to play as someone that I don't identify with, it's just that I would find it difficult to connect with them on the same emotional level I would if I created someone who is me, at least at the start of the game anyway, but I'm sure I would grow to appreciate them just as much.

Not gonna lie, was a little leery when i first clicked the thread, but so far it seems very thoughtful and thought provoking. Here's to hoping it stays that way!

As a straight female, I enjoy playing a girl. I mean I can and sometimes will play a guy for variety, but part of me just loves it when it's the girl who saves the world for once. Plus I can play a man in any number of other games.  That said, I try to pick LI's for the quality of conversation and connection between them and the my character. Even so, sometimes do feel a bit odd when one of the girls makes a move on me, but it wouldn't prevent me from romancing them. Sera is a definite option.

I'm asian white mix, I try to make my character's races that make sense to me in the context of the world and location (warden and hawke were white, shepard was tan mix). Never made an asian character, cause it didn't make sense in the european setting. But then we do have Vivienne (who is glamorous btw), so we can probably assume demographic phenotypes don't apply the same way in this world, so i'll probably start mixing it up. ;)

I love playing other races, the end.

Straight white male here

1) As a heterosexual player, do you feel comfortable having your PC who is not your sex, romance a NPC who is your sex. Like me as a male playing as a female PC who romances a male NPC. Or a heterosexual female who plays as a male PC, but romances a female NPC.

A little uncomfortable, yes, but I got over it.

2) As a homosexual player, do you feel comfortable having your PC who is your sex, romance a NPC who is of opposite sex?

n/a

however, I WOULD be uncomfortable romancing Dorian and probably never will.

3) As a male, do you feel comfortable playing as a female character? As a female, do you feel comfortable playing as a male character?

I have no problems playing either gender

4) If you are white, do you ever create characters that out right do not look "white" but rather black, asian, hispanic, or multi-racial? Or do you just stick with white?

Not usually, usually stick to white. Sometimes Asian(ish). Most games don't do no non-white well. If Vivianne is any indication of what the character creator can do I might, she looks great.

5) If you are not white, do you normally try to create characters who match your racial identity? Or do you create a range of races?

n/a

6) Will you be comfortable romancing Vivenne if you are a white male? Do you even find Vivienne attractive? I do and I like how Bioware decided to create a black female with strong African features instead of the typical European looking female coated in brown skin.

I can't imagine why I wouldn't be comfortable with that. It boggles my mind that anyone would.

7) Will the majority of your Inquisitors be human? How hard or easy is it to play as an Elf or Dwarf  (and now Qunari)?

I'll play all races/both genders. Yup, that's 8 playthroughs, if I like the game that much!

@General TSAR:  Actually, it wasn't much of a generalization.  He used "a lot" - not "all".  You can disagree with the quantity - but it is not a generalization.

1) N/A

2)  Yes, I feel comfortable.  That being said, I don't usually roleplay heterosexuals.  I write them plenty.

3)  Yes, I feel comfortable.  However, I do not choose to play female characters as being female is not appealing to me.  Conversely, writing females is altogether different.

4)  All the time.  While I love my Eurocentric fantasy tropes, I'm so much happier when a world contains environments that are indicative of varied cultures.  India, China and Aztec would be among my favorites.

5) N/A

6)  I would never have a problem romancing Vivienne if I were playing a straight male.

7)  Yes.  I find the "interesting" to be totally artificial when it comes to playing other races.  There's nothing inherently more interesting, for me, in playing a dwarf or qunari (and a really dislike DA elves).  So 90% human for me (I dabbled in Origins with dwarves. Dwarves would be the only other race I'd play.)

Straight, white female (since apparently that matters to my answers?)

1. I romance anything with anyone. I'm down with my inquisitors finding love in all of the right places.

3.  I tend to play females as it is not often that I get the option to. That said, I will play a dude and it doesn't feel weird at all. I'm not my PC after all.

4. Diversity is key. I love creating a variety of shades and looks. I spend a good deal of time in the character creator.

6. Even though I'm not male, I would romance Viv. She's gorgeous~

7. I tend to play everything other than human first. I get to play humans all of the time. lol

1) No, if i play a female character (usually on my 3rd playthrough ) i romance another female character.

2) -

3) Yes, I'm fine with it. Especially in non-story focussed games like mmorpgs i play female characters pretty often.

4) I stick with white.

5) -

6) I would be fine with romancing her, but i probably won't.Don't find her particulary attractive (like any other female character except of maybe Josephine) Have to wait to meet her ingame.

7) First playthrough human. Second probably elf. Third human again or qunari

Fine, I'll bite:

1) As a heterosexual player, do you feel comfortable having your PC who is not your sex, romance a NPC who is your sex. Like me as a male playing as a female PC who romances a male NPC. Or a heterosexual female who plays as a male PC, but romances a female NPC.

1) I play males and females in these games, and generally I first go for the straight male, lesbian female on my first two characters (out of, if I'm being honest, twenty or so characters for DA, 8 or so for DA2.)  I always end up having a F character build a relationship with a M character. Even a male character have a homosexual relationship with a male in DA2. (Never cared for Zevran so it didn't come up in DA:O). I set out in DA2 with the intention of "gettin my bro laid" (as I said to my wife) by making a female Hawke and doing a romance with Fenris.

3) I think I make some very attractive female avatars.

Always been "deep tan" to white with my people.

6) I won't be romancing Vivienne, but I guess I have to preface that by saying I don't plan on romancing Sera or Cassandra either. To me there is a common theme between the characters of "strong females have to be bitches and/or arrogant in order to be strong" which is too bad. It looks like I will be sticking to Josephine and man on man lovin' this time around. Honestly I feel EVERY male character is more compelling and interesting than the female characters in this game. I find it very disappointing.

7) I've played dwarves and elves, but to me they're hardly different than humans. Maybe it was just the "King of Ferelden" allure, but I was almost always human noble. I am all about being a Qunari though. I'm about to Qunari so hard.

I wouldn't mind playing a game with a static main character who is gay, or another sexual orientation that's different than me. A game like Silent Hill, Bioshock, or The Last of Us. As long as the story is good, that's what I care about.

3) As a male, do you feel comfortable playing as a female character? As a female, do you feel comfortable playing as a male character?

I've played as female characters in static games, and I didn't mind. Good story is what's important, first and foremost. I enjoyed Silent Hill 3 as much as I did the first two. Most recently, I played as female characters in Bioshock: Infinite and the Last of Us.

5) If you are not white, do you normally try to create characters who match your racial identity? Or do you create a range of races?

In RPGs, I tend to create canon characters that have some semblance to me. My protagonists in Fallout 3 and New Vegas are Latino. I substitute Antivan for Latino in Dragon Age, but the person is male. The personality is usually where I shift things around, and create different characters.

6) Will you be comfortable romancing Vivenne if you are a white male? Do you even find Vivienne attractive? I do and I like how Bioware decided to create a black female with strong African features instead of the typical European looking female coated in brown skin.

I'd prefer playing as a character who is ethnically Antivan. I think Vivienne looks beautiful, but I find her personality incompatible with the character I have in mind, given that she seems pro-Circle and has ties with Celene, while I'm planning on a Dalish mage (who will look ethnically Antivan, similar to my Surana Warden and my apostate Champion). I also like Bioware's decision to provide non-white characters in Dragon Age; I think Vivienne, Dorian, and Josephine will be interesting.

7) Will the majority of your Inquisitors be human? How hard or easy is it to play as an Elf or Dwarf  (and now Qunari)?

I have no interest in playing as an Andrastian human. None at all. I don't like their culture or religion, I don't find it entertaining to play as one, and I hated being limited to one in Dragon Age II. The inclusion of multiple races is why I have an interest in Inquisition; I wouldn't consider purchasing the game otherwise, and I voiced that opinion when Inquisition was originally "human only". I suppose it's the same with the Imperials in the Elder Scrolls, where I prefer the Dunmer over the Caucasian human (Imperial), given that I find they have a much more interesting and dynamic culture (as well as more intriguing perspectives to play as one).

As for the other racial options, I'm interested in them. Dwarven and Vashoth should be interesting; I'm curious if the latter can be an atheist, given how the character wasn't raised under the Qun. I'm very interested in the elven option, because I have a keen interest in their lore and culture, and I'm quite happy at the prospect of playing an ethnically Antivan Dalish mage.

My opinion is largely dependent on things I don't know about DA:I yet. Just gonna tackle the basics in essay form because people are less likely to read my responses and yell at me for having a non-politically correct opinion.

Often my character's skin color is determined by how well the game's lighting handles complex shading. Certain shades of white look ridiculous, even so far as to be opalescent. Certain shades of black undermine shadow work because lighting in games, short of Ray Tracing (Which is extremely expensive to do) can't replicate the behavior of photons. As for Caucasian-African-Asian features, having a breadth of options is good, but I tend to pick what looks best in the moment without over thinking it too much. I'm very much pro-representation, but I'm staunchly against Preference Shaming. If someone finds a particular set of features attractive/ugly that's their right.

As for sexualities that run in a counter-intuitive fashion to my own. Yeah, it makes me a little uncomfortable much the same way being a pre-teen and learning the finer points about interacting women who up until that point were "Icky" did, so I'd imagine that's mostly from not having a particularly large exposure to homosexual or bisexual perspectives in my life. It doesn't stop me from exploring those options and even enjoying the stories therein, as a hetero male I have a bit easier time with the lesbian image because the unavoidable truth is that I find women sexually appealing and not men, burn me at the stake for having an opinion if you want.

As for which sex I prefer, that depends really. I lean for something a bit more unique in games where I can create a character, which often means a Female since male protagonists are a dime a dozen. For BioWare romances, I tend to gauge personality over sexual appeal... which is obviously easier if I'm playing a female character since, Character Creator willing, I've already got a looker prancing around on screen as it is. That said, even playing a male character an attractive female character can say the wrong thing and it's no sausage for Ashley Williams. Vivienne herself seems to be in that no-sausage zone (Assuming she's straight and even available) as she's a bit of a self-absorbed social Darwinist, perhaps even a sociopath, but we don't have much to go on.

Finally, I intend to play Dragon Age: Inquisition for as long as it holds appeal to me.. That might be forty minutes, that might be five hundred hours. Depending on that I'll try to get in at least one of every race combo, with an even split of sexes.

3) I'm not uncomfortable playing male characters, but I just get bored. All of my Dragon Age and Mass Effect playthroughs where I've started as a male, I just ... stop after an hour or so. Can't keep my interest.

4) I love making characters who aren't white. I have white characters here and there, as well, but I love having the option and I definitely use it.

7) The majority of my characters will be probably not be human, I much prefer playing a non-human. I'll play a human once to get their backstory.

Absolutely no reason to burn you at the stake for having an opinion.  You were polite and respectful about your opinion and also identified that it's something that you might explore if the story was interesting to you.  This is pretty much all that I hope to hear from people.  I wish more people were as up front about their opinions, in polite ways, and yet still open minded to possibilities.  I appreciate it.

I'm heterosexual male, now to answer those questions.

1)Yes. I can't bear to play as a woman, it just doesn't click with me. I don't think there's anything wrong with it, I just can't take that character in the game seriously. Since I can't take her seriously, I can't take the romance she might do with another male seriously. If I push it, it does make me uncomfortable. It's like trying to wear a woman's shoe or something.

2)Not homosexual. Never played a homosexual character before(I tried once for achievement in DA:O, didn't go so well). I do feel uncomfortable if I attempt it. It's an instinctive thing.

3) Same as 1.

4)Not white, but never had a problem with white characters. I prefer creating white characters when there is the option, over people of colour despite being one myself.

5)Same as 4.

6)I think Vivienne is pretty, but I'm not into her kind of beauty. So I guess I don't find her attractive.

7)Probably will start off as Kossith in Inquisition. Never had a problem doing races other than human, but human is my comfort zone.

Honestly, I just enjoy playing the game and listening/watching the story Mr Gaider and his pals are telling me.

Everything else is secondary because none of this stuff is why I play these games.
