2) N\A
3) I've no problem playing - or roleplaying - male or female characters.
4) N\A
5) You know, this sort of thing is largely dependent on the quality of the customisation options made available to me. That said, I've no preference.
6) I think Vivienne is attractive enough, though am not overly fond of her 'iconic' fashion sense.
7) I'll be rolling my first dwarf in Inquisition.

1) As a heterosexual player, do you feel comfortable having your PC who is not your sex, romance a NPC who is your sex. Like me as a male playing as a female PC who romances a male NPC. Or a heterosexual female who plays as a male PC, but romances a female NPC.
nope, not an issue. i rarely use that feature tho, romance i mean. if it happens - PCs and their romances pretty much come in all shape and sizes. and i don't use mods for such things.
2) As a homosexual player, do you feel comfortable having your PC who is your sex, romance a NPC who is of opposite sex?
3) As a male, do you feel comfortable playing as a female character? As a female, do you feel comfortable playing as a male character?
i'm a female. i guess i'm used to playing male. in most games there is no gender choice. so nope, not an issue.
4) If you are white, do you ever create characters that out right do not look "white" but rather black, asian, hispanic, or multi-racial? Or do you just stick with white?
multiracial definetely (Redguards, Khajits, asian, black). also i rarely play human if i have a choice
5) If you are not white, do you normally try to create characters who match your racial identity? Or do you create a range of races?
6) Will you be comfortable romancing Vivenne if you are a white male? Do you even find Vivienne attractive? I do and I like how Bioware decided to create a black female with strong African features instead of the typical European looking female coated in brown skin.
i find Viv very attractive. if i have a 'romance' PT, i'll definetely romance her.
7) Will the majority of your Inquisitors be human? How hard or easy is it to play as an Elf or Dwarf (and now Qunari)?
as i've said - i think none of my inquisitors will be human

1. I'm a straight female and I have no problem playing as a male character. I like seeing if the romance or dialog changes between genders. I have no issue romancing a girl or boy whether I'm a male character or female character.
2.-skipped-
3. I feel comfortable playing a male character. think it's because most games you kind of have to play as a male character, so that's why I have no issue with it.
4. -skipped-
5. I'm Hispanic and I never make my character look like me. I honestly don't care about skin color but I tend to just chose whatever I want.
6. I think Vivenne is attractive, I wouldn't might romancing her.
7. I'm planning to be a Qunari for my first run. After that.... I honestly don't know. I think I might take some time seeing how each race looks like when I'm in character customization. I usually like to try all of the races.

I'm a straight female and on my first playthrough I always play as a straight female, but then I try everything else. I play each race, all classes, males and females, straight characters and gays. And I love it! It's a roleplaying game, so I don't have to play myself, I play a character.
Out of curiosity I asked my husband (he's not that much into RPGs, so he nerver plays twice), if he would play as a female character on a second playthrough. He said only if I would tell him to
and then he would probably romance another female.

2. Yes. I view it as less than ideal, but so long as the content is good I'm willing to play as people who are not me.
3. Yes, I feel comfortable enough playing as a male character. Again, it's not ideal, but I'm used to it and as long as the content is good I'll play pretty much anything.
4. Yes.
5. N/A
6. N/A
7. Probably not a majority, no. Maybe a plurality, but I'm not sure yet. The most important consideration is how easy it is for me to create faces that I like; after that, roleplaying; after that, story implications. I played very few dwarven characters in DA:O because I didn't like the faces I made for them, not because I dislike playing dwarves in general.

Gotta admit, I'm impressed with the development of this thead. Like I said when I posted my answers, I'm a straight white male player and I admit I've basically given up keeping track of what's the politically correct acronym of the day, mostly because i just don't really have to care. That's completely selfish, but it's just something I don't have to deal with, so I don't until I need to for whatever reason. But I absolutely love that this forum is the kind of place where people it does matter to can be honest about who they are. Well done, Bioware forums, pat yourselves on the back.

Interesting thread, I read it few days back, created account today. I thought I should write smth.
straight, female, white here
I'm usually playing with male non-human characters (because i want them to be as much different from me as possible).
Male dwarf (or qunari if we're talking about DA) can be only straight in my book. Females can go both ways, any race (cause the real-life females are more open-minded IMO). Dwarven males usually don't do romances at all (because I'm always looking for a nice dwarven woman for them - and there is none). Elven males and females can go both ways. It suits them, I think.
I have nothing against creating a character that romances a NPC of any race, sexuallity or identity - but the romance (and sometimes just the very idea of starting a romance is not compatible with the character I'm creating/roleplaying) must be good for the story I'm trying to create.

May I ask what it is you mean by straight suiting dwarfs and bi suiting elves? Is it your personal preference to roleplay them as such or you feel the races are inherently more viable for one sexuality or the other? I'm afraid I'm a bit confused.

Congratulations OP on this thoughtful thread
and to the posters for making it so.
Hetero/male
1) As a heterosexual player, do you feel comfortable having your PC who is not your sex, romance a NPC who is your sex.
I would say i do feel comfortable, but the opportunity hasn't arisen. I was so taken by Leliana, Merril and Liara in other games that no-one else got a look in.
This time with DAi there are a really good mix of characters so my first f:m romance will be with Iron Bull and I'll take it from there. If I had the patience I could happily try each of the DAI romances this time.
3) As a male, do you feel comfortable playing as a female character?
Yes, in fact I prefer it. It's role play and a male character risks being a caricature of me.
4) If you are white, do you ever create characters that out right do not look "white" but rather black, asian, hispanic, or multi-racial? Or do you just stick with white?
No, always white, mostly out of habit, and also because I can't perceive a role-play difference in playing black, asian, hispanic, or multi-racial in the fantasy setting of Thedas. I have occasionally played non-white player characters in other games.
6) Will you be comfortable romancing Vivenne if you are a white male? Do you even find Vivienne attractive?
Absolutely yes and yes certainly.
7) Will the majority of your Inquisitors be human? How hard or easy is it to play as an Elf or Dwarf (and now Qunari)?
In the past (in Origins) I have played elves, humans and dwarves in the proportion: 1/2 : 1/3 : 1/6.
If the story is good I find it very easy and I'm looking forward to Qunari playthroughs this time.

I'm fine with playing female characters and can romance either male or female characters with them, I usually play male characters and romance female characters however.
I usually make white characters, namely because I find it easier to creat them, I usually end up making non-white characters look like the love child of Frankenstein's monster and a squid.
I think Vivienne looks like the above
The majority of my characters will be humans, in fact probably all of them

1) Yes. I've played female characters of varying orientations. My male characters have all been straight. I don't seem to have the ability to inhabit such a character; at any rate, I haven't tried.
2) N/A
3) I don't have any problem playing as a different gender.
4) In games with a modern CC my characters look, at most, mixed-race. I have played nonwhite characters in games like KotOR, where you just pick a head from a list. I'm not really sure why I don't ever come out of the thing with a black or Asian character.
5) N/A.
6) Sure. I've dated people who look like that ITRW, so why not in a game. Well, they didn't look as good as Vivienne
7) I generally give many races a shot. I didn't have a problem with this in DA:O since the intros give you a good idea about what it's like to be a member of that race, so I'll be fine about playing them in DAI. I don't know about playing as a qunari yet. In any event, it will take a long time for me to reach four playthroughs, given the size of DAI.

As for your questions I don't usually do Male to male but I do play female male and female to female relationship options
I do chose to play as non black when it fits the environment better heck in saints row I pretty much try everything possible including the guy guy scenes
And lastly while I am married to a black woman it's really about how we click and for me game relationship choice is no different.

Straight, white male reporting in:
1) Yup. No problem there.
3) I usually play males, but I have no problem playing female characters either.
4) I think roughly... 50%? of my characters are white. Secondly it's probably someone who looks either black or middle-eastern.
6) Vivienne is attractive, though I don't think I will romance her on any of my first couple of playthroughs. I don't think she will get that well along with any of my planned characters.
7) Not sure. The first one will probably be human. After that, dunno. Qunari, probably.

1. Since i sink some aspects, of my own personality into my characters, i'll stick to my own sexual identity. I'll romance female characters only, regardless of character gender. If i romance at all in a particular game.
2. N/A
3. I play female characters a lot. In PnP D&D, i had several female characters i loved to play.
4. Skintone really doesn't mean that much to me. I like variety, so yes i will play characters of another real world ethnicity (always do), and fantasy races. Which i choose, all depends on the concept, i'm creating for a particular character.
5. N/A
6. If playing a pro-templar or pro-free mage character, then i'll pass on Vivienne. Otherwise at least once.
7. Elves and dwarves, i have been playing for decades. And i'll try each of them at least once. I like variety in my role playing. But i don't really like Qunari, though i'll probably play a Qunari mage, in one of my runs.

1) I'm bisexual. I play straight and gay romances with both genders.
2,3) I play both male and female characters. Usually I play both about 50/50, but all my canon DA characters are male. On the other hand all my Skyrim characters are female.
4,5) I'm white as snow, and I have created almost exclusively white characters. It's not some racist "down with the blacks!" thing, I just hadn't thought about it. Recently I've been making a bit more diverse characters, so that they don't all look the same.
6) I really like Viv's clothes. I wasn't sure about the face at first (her skin is a bit too shiny to be realistic and her eyes dead), but she does look really nice in that new screenshot in Varric's character page. I hope you can create characters with black facial features as well, and that black NPCs don't look whites with a tan again. We'll see.
7) I had planned to play one character of each race, two male, two female. If the game is so good I wan't to play it four times, of course ![]()

2) I have no problem with it, it doesn't feel "right" for me to romance someone of the opposite gender though. Since i don't play as myself, I feel more close when I play a gay woman/man.
3) Not much. I find it tiring and I get bored after a little while. Assuming we're talking about RPG, if it's a game with a set protagonist i have no other option so I play him.
4) Since i don't customize my character (i choose the default most of times and they happen to be white) but when i customize, i do use anything other than white. Depends on my mood.
5) N/A
6) N/A (why not asking the same question for female players since Viv's sexuality isn't confirmed?)
7) I'll play qunari in my first playthrough. And i'll probably use the other races and lastly human.

I'm bisexual so 1 and 2 don't really apply to me.
3) I'm not uncomfortable playing male characters, but I prefer female when I'm given a choice. Usually it's more about novelty than anything--the majority of the games I play have a default male protag, although that's starting to change. But yeah, I prefer female when given the chance. With Cass being a straight LI I'm almost definitely playing a male Inquisitor at some point though.
4) My first characters are almost always white, and I think the majority of my characters probably are, but I try not to have all of them white. It feels kind of weird, otherwise.
6) Not a white male, but I am white, and if Vivienne ends up being available as a romance you can BET I'll romance her one way or another. I think she seems really interesting and awesome.
7) Actually the MINORITY of my PCs are human when I'm given the chance. Same thing as the gender of my PC, human is what I'm usually stuck playing as. Elves, dwarves, etc are novelties in comparison so they're more interesting to me. In fact I'm playing a qunari in Inquisition partially because I don't want to repeat races in my "canon" worldstate for the PC heroes unless I have to (elf in Origins, human in 2 of course, qunari in Inquisition, dwarf in 4 if a fourth game comes out and we're given that option is my current plan). I do the same thing with classes--Warden was a warrior, Hawke was a rogue, so the Inquisitor will be a mage.
I love variety to the point that noticing that I'm repeating one of my past PCs bugs me to some degree. ![]()

Just for perspective I am a straight white female married to a white male.
1. When given a choice, I usually play a female PC that romances male NPCs. I actually tried to romance Liliana once in DOA and just couldn't do it. I'm just wired to be straight. That being said, I played both Witcher's and had no problem romancing females there. However, I was never that emotionally invested in Geralt or any of his female choices. I truly believe that it is the amount of emotional investment a player has in their PC that dictates whether they can romance outside of their sexual orientation. On a side note, depending on my initial experience with with Dorian, I am considering crating a male PC to explore Dorian as a LI. i won't know this until my first play through though.
2. N/A
3. As a female I can play comfortably as a male character, but I prefer females. I personally get a more immersive experience playing as a female. Most of my male characters end up being some sort of caricature. Case in point, in my current table tip D20 game I am playing a male barbarian named Meat who has an ever-full leather flagon of strong ale.
4. I'm not sure I can classify my females as Hispanic, but I do tend to create a more exotic look if possible and tend to pick darker skin tones. As much as I try I can never recreate me as a human; white, lightly freckled, etc. The closest I came was with the female dwarfs in DOA. Maybe Frostbite will be different.
5. N/A
6. I am not a white male, but i think Vivienne is stunning! She has beautiful smooth chocolate colored skin, and amazing eyes. I may not be physically attracted to women, but she is certainly aesthetically pleasing.
7. No.,I am naturally a curious person and really enjoy the perspectives provided by playing the different races. I also role play and love to build a back story for each of my PC's. Since I am human I am intimately familiar with the human experience. And, since we could only choose humans in DA2, I think I know what humans are about in the world of Thedas. I am still considering starting my first play through with a human mostly since I would like to see the story, but also so I can build social context for when I play the other races.

I'm a heterosexual female and I'm comfortable with it. I've played plenty of male video game characters that have hetero romances in the plot so perhaps that's why the idea of my male PC romancing a female NPC doesn't feel strange to me.

I doubt it; I already have ideas for different playthroughs for all four races! I think I've always had the hardest time playing Dwarves in fantasy games in general though. The lore that's usually around them hasn't really interested me. I never did play one in Origins (I think I'll try before November), and II didn't have the option, but I'm actually excited to play one in Inquisition. It may be because we're playing a surface dwarf and a Cadash.

1. I don't like playing non-female characters, period. I will do it in some rare outstanding games where you play a static character, but in general if I can't play as a female, I won't even buy the game. However, I really enjoyed playing through the romances in Torment, so I guess I'm comfortable with gender-bending romances.
2. N/A
3. I can feel comfortable playing a male character (like, say, Nameless), but, given the choice, I will play female. I like being a girl. The game has to be pretty darn good for it to be worth my time to play as a male.
4. All the time, provided I can make non-white characters don't look like white people with deep tans. I hate that look and I'm super-picky about appearance.
5. N/A
6. I think Vivienne looks awesome, but I'm not male. I also don't pick my romances based exclusively on their appearance before I know anything about them.

2) I'm gay, and it doesn't bother me that much but it just doesn't really interest me anymore. In my first Mass Effect playthrough I chose Tali as my main Male Shepard and I really liked that, but I probably would have chosen a M/M romance for my first playthrough if there was one in at least Mass Effect 2. I didn't really feel like waiting till Mass Effect 3 to doing a romance, and I don't like the idea of cheating on someone either. But I have done the Kaidan romance for Male Shepard in another playthrough and I liked it. But now there are a lot more options in recent Bioware games I don't think I will even try the heterosexual romances this time. I'm definitely gonna romance Iron Bull and Dorian as Male Inquisitor and Sera as Female in three seperate playthroughs and if I ever get around to doing a fourth I will probably pick Josephine or any other bisexual options (if they get announced)!
3) Yeah definitely, when playing Bioware games I tend to pick male characters first and role play a bit with that but I will definitely play a female Inquisitor and romance Sera. I just finished Dragon Age Origins as a Male Dwarf Noble and I plan to play Male Hawke but when I get round to second playthroughs I'm gonna play as female. In Mass Effect though I have done FemShep playthroughs but I am not a huge fan of Jennifer Hale's voice acting for those games (I love her in other stuff though) so it kind of puts me off at times but I love the idea of a female Shepard.
4) It kind of depends really, when I roleplay (for my first Shepard I kind of did that) I tend to make them white but for other playthroughs I tend to make them a different race, like for my Origins playthrough my Dwarf Noble was mixed race, although I soon found out it made no sense since all my family were white and looked completely different anyway aha. But for female playthroughs I usually make them black or mixed race (I tried to make a japanese FemShep but it didn't really look right in the end)
6) I think she's attractive, if she is a bisexual romance option I'm gonna pick her over Josephine (I prefer companion/squadmate romances) for my possible 4th playthrough. I hate seeing people already talk about making mods to turn her and Dorian white, she looks great as she is and representation is important. There aren't enough black people in Dragon Age as it is so I don't get why people are complaining, and Vivienne looks great!
7) I always choose non-human if you get the option, it kind of makes it harder to role play (like with my first Shepard I imagined what I would do in his position, whereas I didn't really do that with my Dwarf Noble) but I think it can actually make it more fun because I make more distinctive characters that way. I'm gonna play as a male elf for my first playthrough, then either a male or female qunari (I'll do both eventually though) and if I ever get round to it a female dwarf.

With all that being said, where do you stand on such issues?
1) As a heterosexual player, do you feel comfortable having your PC who is not your sex, romance a NPC who is your sex. Like me as a male playing as a female PC who romances a male NPC. Or a heterosexual female who plays as a male PC, but romances a female NPC.
2) As a homosexual player, do you feel comfortable having your PC who is your sex, romance a NPC who is of opposite sex?
3) As a male, do you feel comfortable playing as a female character? As a female, do you feel comfortable playing as a male character?
4) If you are white, do you ever create characters that out right do not look "white" but rather black, asian, hispanic, or multi-racial? Or do you just stick with white?
5) If you are not white, do you normally try to create characters who match your racial identity? Or do you create a range of races?
6) Will you be comfortable romancing Vivenne if you are a white male? Do you even find Vivienne attractive? I do and I like how Bioware decided to create a black female with strong African features instead of the typical European looking female coated in brown skin.
7) Will the majority of your Inquisitors be human? How hard or easy is it to play as an Elf or Dwarf (and now Qunari)?

First, kudos for a well presented thread.
1. Yes, I feel comfortable doing this, but I also have discomfort if I internalize my female character too much with romantic scenarios. I roleplay from the third person, though, so my trick is to switch romantic perspective. So if I'm playing a female character in a romantic scenario, I'll make her choices according to who she is, but I'll approach the attraction angle from the perspective of the male love interest. I have no problem shifting the first person to whichever character I personally need to inhabit more in a scene. Most of my females are straight, but they're also going to typically be attractive to me to accomodate this. I consider them both from internal and external perspective.
2. n/a
3. As a male, I have no trouble playing female, but there is a distinction in how I approach it. I typically play between a 1:1 & 2:1 ratio M:F.
4. I'm majority euro, and native american. I create characters of all different ethnicities and mixed ethnicities. I don't strongly self identify by race in roleplay. I understand it, but I like diversiity. I do, however, let the setting inform my racial selection, depending on the perspective I intend to play. I hope we do continue to have contextualized families in DA. It's a great feature.
5. see above
6. I'm thrilled with Vivi's design and find her attractive and striking. Her personality description so far, I find less attractive. I expect I'll romance all the female characters for a playthrough at least. I don't know really until I play though. I guess I should say I've dated women of multiple races irl. I don't have any hard racial preference.
7. Most likely a majority of my inquisitors will not be human. Variety again. Typically if you give me an either or choice, I choose both. When there's a metaphorical fork in the road, I take it. ![]()
edit: Odd. It doubled up on me. and the quotation disappeared >_< and typo lol

3) Yes. In fact many of my play throughs of ME1-3 were with Femshep and I had both straight and homosexual romances. Even on my Maleshep.
In both DA and ME I've played both male and female characters. In games like WoW, Skyrim, Fallout and other RPG/MMORPGs same deal. However most of my characters are male but I always make it a point to play a female just cause. It's about a 60/30 split.
4) Sometimes I make different ethnicity of characters other than my own.
6) Yes in atleast one playthrough. Yes.
7) No I try not to make humans If I don't have to. Only one Human warden was made across my 9 playthroughs of DA:O none of my toons in WoW are human. I don't really understand the point in making a human in games that give me the option to be something else, since I'm human (or atleast I'm 98% sure I am). Plus I find most human lore in games to be a snooze fest.

Male Gay Player here so I'll respond. Intriguing thread btw OP.
2) As a homosexual player, do you feel comfortable having your PC who is your sex, romance a NPC who is of opposite sex?
I wouldn't say I feel uncomfortable per se, uncomfortable feels like the wrong word. I've been conditioned enough by games to deal with it when I have to, but as a consequence I tend to feel less of a connection to the PC. I tend not to feel the same level of connection to them as I do with say the Warden, Hawke or Shepard as I would with another game where the game offers choices but not enough to allow me to self-insert a bit. For example, while I absolutely love the Persona series for instance and plan on buying the next game in the series when its released, I don't feel as much as a connection with the main character and thus the universe in general than I would say DA or ME. Its why in the hypothetical universe where the next Bioware game released is up next to the next Persona game, I would go for Bioware every time. I just feel more like myself when I play it and thus I enjoy myself more while playing it.
3) As a male, do you feel comfortable playing as a female character? As a female, do you feel comfortable playing as a male character?
As a male, I feel comfortable playing a female character. Although my first choice is always male when I'm given the option. First few characters tend to be male. All future characters can be either male or female depending on the backstory I make up, or in some instances handed to me by the game. And I just RP them as I believe they would act.
4) If you are white, do you ever create characters that out right do not look "white" but rather black, asian, hispanic, or multi-racial? Or do you just stick with white?
First character matches my skin tone best I could, all future characters its whatever the mood strikes me as I play the character. Although I do (fairly often) keep the default settings for character appearance, because I can never get my character to look right anyway.
5) If you are not white, do you normally try to create characters who match your racial identity? Or do you create a range of races?
I usually stick with default characters unless I can make a character look good and not like the victim of some unfortunate accident.
6) Will you be comfortable romancing Vivenne if you are a white male? Do you even find Vivienne attractive? I do and I like how Bioware decided to create a black female with strong African features instead of the typical European looking female coated in brown skin.
If she is bi, then one of my female characters will probably romance her. But that's pretty far down the road. Like 3 or 4 playthroughs before I get there.
7) Will the majority of your Inquisitors be human? How hard or easy is it to play as an Elf or Dwarf (and now Qunari)?
I almost always play humans in games, although I may make the aforementioned female playthrough as a Female Qunari Rogue.
