1) As a heterosexual player, do you feel comfortable having your PC who is not your sex, romance a NPC who is your sex. Like me as a male playing as a female PC who romances a male NPC. Or a heterosexual female who plays as a male PC, but romances a female NPC.

N/A

2) As a homosexual player, do you feel comfortable having your PC who is your sex, romance a NPC who is of opposite sex?

I'm gonna have to be truthful and quietly say not very, when it comes to video games which are big on choices for your player-character and relationships. I've done this a lot in video games, though, when it was part of the plot, only because the storyline written it in for the main protagonist. Personally, in real life, depending on where you are, you're almost always restricted from expressing homosexual attraction, whether it be flirting to public displays of affection. Video games, for me, are an escape from that. So while there may be this option to romance NPCs, if they're only of the opposite sex, I would just decline and stick with just playing the game.

3) As a male, do you feel comfortable playing as a female character? As a female, do you feel comfortable playing as a male character?

I see no issue with playing as a female character.

4) If you are white, do you ever create characters that out right do not look "white" but rather black, asian, hispanic, or multi-racial? Or do you just stick with white?

N/A

5) If you are not white, do you normally try to create characters who match your racial identity? Or do you create a range of races?

I wasn't aware at first, but I have tried to be a bit more inclusive with my character designs...

6) Will you be comfortable romancing Vivenne if you are a white male? Do you even find Vivienne attractive? I do and I like how Bioware decided to create a black female with strong African features instead of the typical European looking female coated in brown skin.

Not sure if this applies to me, but I think Vivienne looks very pretty.

7) Will the majority of your Inquisitors be human? How hard or easy is it to play as an Elf or Dwarf  (and now Qunari)?

Nope. The hierarchy for me goes, from most favourable to least:

  1. Elf (Hells yeah!)
  2. Qunari (Interesting...)
  3. Human (I'm already human, so something different would be nice...)
  4. Dwarf (But not that kind of different.)

Although, I haven't completed a playthrough as a human character, though, so playing an elf was like being in my element. Playing a dwarf wasn't for me since I just haven't found in me to appreciate the design nor their backstory- that, and because I like playing mages, dwarves are definitely out in that regard. Qunari, though, on the other hand, I'm keen on playing...

(answering both one and two sorry don't have enough data on myself to say I'm anything) Yeah I've done this before in some games though not very much. I surprisingly do this more so in games that your gender doesn't really matter in as opposed to ones that do.

2) As a homosexual player, do you feel comfortable having your PC who is your sex, romance a NPC who is of opposite sex?

(again answering both sorry) Yes while most of my favorite couples are F/F I have about the same number of s/s and o/s romances for my DA saves.

3) As a male, do you feel comfortable playing as a female character? As a female, do you feel comfortable playing as a male character?

It takes me longer to play as male in most games but yes I'm fine playing as my opposite gender, most of my Fable games I run with a male hero actually. I don't roll a male often in DA though probably because I prefer the F/F romances.

4) If you are white, do you ever create characters that out right do not look "white" but rather black, asian, hispanic, or multi-racial? Or do you just stick with white?

(I'm not white but i look it if that counts?)

Since I can't seem to nail down my own race very well I end up usually making a lot of more PCs that look more asain or black, I've attempted hispanic once but it came out looking horrible to me so just sticking to the more 'asian' and 'black' looking kind of PCs

5) If you are not white, do you normally try to create characters who match your racial identity? Or do you create a range of races?

(I'm not but I look it sorry if I'm doing this wrong)

I try but I am horrible at it so I end up creating a different range of races usually 'asian' 'black' and 'white'. I would love it if I could nail down my race though hell I probably wouldn't make another kind of PC for a while if I could pull that off.

6) Will you be comfortable romancing Vivenne if you are a white male? Do you even find Vivienne attractive? I do and I like how Bioware decided to create a black female with strong African features instead of the typical European looking female coated in brown skin.

(Finally one I know not to answer  )

7) Will the majority of your Inquisitors be human? How hard or easy is it to play as an Elf or Dwarf  (and now Qunari)?

NOPE! Humans will probably be the last thing I play most of my PCs I have planned in my head are dwarf and qunari. Usually it takes me a playthrough to soak in the culture but once its in I feel like I role play them pretty well, aside from Dalish I have trouble with that one.

4. I think this makes no sense in DA context. There are no blacks/hispanics/caucasians in DA as we know them in real life. We have antivans, rivianis, etc. Since the cultural context is vastly different I have a hard time associating the same things to them. In Fallout games or other RPGs based on an alternative Earth scenario they still retain some of their lingo, mannerisms and what not. So playing as a "black guy" in DA is vastly different for me from playing it in some other game. This is just my opinion though.

Either way, I hve no trouble playing them. I had a dark skinned elf in Origins and that's about it. I didn't think a black skinned protagnist would fit the setting in either case. In Inquisition I'm planning on making my human male rogue darker ("hispanic") looking. I was gonne make my female human mage "black", but Viv has that now, so maybe I'll go for a dark skinned Qunari. Not 100% sure on that yet.

No

I am not comfortable playing as a male and will usually not buy a game that doesn't give me the option.

4) If you are white, do you ever create characters that out right do not look "white" but rather black, asian, hispanic, or multi-racial? Or do you just stick with whi

I experimented in origins and DA2 with different skin tones but I really didn't like the results, I'm hoping that the DAI creator will give better results if so I can make more diverse characters.

5) If you are not white, do you normally try to create characters who match your racial identity? Or do you create a range of races?

I'm not male but I'm going to answer anyway, if Vivienne is available to me I will romance her.  I do find her attractive.

7) Will the majority of your Inquisitors be human? How hard or easy is it to play as an Elf or Dwarf (and now Qunari)?

I play all races but for some reason I've never completed a game as a dwarf.

With all that being said, where do you stand on such issues?

1) As a heterosexual player, do you feel comfortable having your PC who is not your sex, romance a NPC who is your sex. Like me as a male playing as a female PC who romances a male NPC. Or a heterosexual female who plays as a male PC, but romances a female NPC.

2) As a homosexual player, do you feel comfortable having your PC who is your sex, romance a NPC who is of opposite sex?

3) As a male, do you feel comfortable playing as a female character? As a female, do you feel comfortable playing as a male character?

6) Will you be comfortable romancing Vivenne if you are a white male? Do you even find Vivienne attractive? I do and I like how Bioware decided to create a black female with strong African features instead of the typical European looking female coated in brown skin.

7) Will the majority of your Inquisitors be human? How hard or easy is it to play as an Elf or Dwarf  (and now Qunari)?

1) N/A

2) N/A

3) I feel super comfortable playing either sex. The more different my characters, the better. I am a bisexual female and my first playthough will be a gay qunari, who is going to romance Iron Bull. Simply, because I am interested in creating such a character. My second playthough will be a female elf, who is going to romance Cullen (if he's not race-gated, that is.). Third playthrough will be a female human who romances Sera, etc...

4) Again, it depends on the character I want to make. My Shepard in the ME games was always a black female. My warden in DA:O was a male elf who looked kind of hispanic. My human quizzi, who is going to romance Sera will be black. My elf, who is (hopefully) going to romance Cullen will be a white ginger.

5)  N/A

6) I aint a man, but I'm so going to romance that girl. I have the hugest crush on her and I find her absolutly gorgeous. If it's not possible I'll just swoon over her for the rest of my life.

7) No. I plan to make way more qunari and elves than humans. I am very interested in seeing the reactions to a qunari in the game.

1, 2 & 3 -- How characters in a story interact with other characters in a story rarely (if ever) cause me to feel uncomfortable.

4 & 5 -- it mostly depends on the game setting, race I am playing and what I can do with the character creator.  Too many times the extreme light and dark ends lose all definition while the center colors look like an orange spray tan.  Then I have to balance the available skin tones with makeup options, hair colors and how it all looks in game.  I will generate dozens of characters the first weekend I have a game until I find what I think looks best on the screen.  But none of that process is concerned with ethnicity, if that is what you are asking.

6 -- See 1, 2, and 3.

7 - I can not see into the future so I have no idea.  See 4 & 5 about what I will most likely play. Whatever I can make look the best to me is what I will play most often.

It seems it would be better to word the first two questions a bit differently. The word 'discomfort' isn't very fitting and I feel many view the word as having a negative connotation attached to it. I think from these answers there are a significant number of people who don't necessarily feel uncomfortable playing a PC that don't match their gender and/or sexuality but that they feel no incentive to do so. I personally play all gender/sexuality combos because I enjoy them, but I can see how someone else might not be into the same without being uncomfortable about it.

Nice topic OP, and fistbump for Sam Wilson support! Anyways, as to the topic, I am a black, straight (ish) woman for what's it worth.

1) As a heterosexual player, do you feel comfortable having your PC who is not your sex, romance a NPC who is your sex. Like me as a male playing as a female PC who romances a male NPC. Or a heterosexual female who plays as a male PC, but romances a female NPC.

--I don't mind playing as a male to do it, even if it isn't my first choice. The games I've played that allow for "romances" tend to have male protags, like GTA or Witcher, so I'm used to virtually snogging a girl from the dude's perspective. Don't have much choice otherwise -_- With BioWare games though, I would prefer playing a female PC to romance another female NPC, and/or female to male.

3) As a female, do you feel comfortable playing as a male character?

--Like I said above: it's aight. I usually make them look like they just walked off a Thedas' Next Top Model runway and ogle them for the whole game.

5) If you are not white, do you normally try to create characters who match your racial identity? Or do you create a range of races?

--All the time. I will always first make a black character in any game that allows for extensive character creation. And after a few playthroughts experimenting with different facial feature combinations, I'll move on to trying to create characters of a larger variety of ethnicites, like East or Southern Asian characters, or Middle Eastern characters, mixed, Latino... rarely white, tho. The modern gaming catalog seems to already be congested with plenty white characters; there isn't really much of a need for me to further contribute. :P

6) Will you be comfortable romancing Vivenne if you are a white male? Do you even find Vivienne attractive? I do and I like how Bioware decided to create a black female with strong African features instead of the typical European looking female coated in brown skin.

--Not a white male obvi, but Vivienne is absolutely gorgeous to me. The prominence of her features and dark skin is lovely to see in any environment. And I know people dog her looks a lot. -_- Maybe it's because her facial design may not be up to Eurocentric standards of beauty, but in any case, they're just gonna have to deal. I also agree very much with your last sentence there OP, but that is a discussion for another time (and forum!).

7) Will the majority of your Inquisitors be human? How hard or easy is it to play as an Elf or Dwarf  (and now Qunari)?

--Humans will actually be a minority in my game. I remember that I only played the Human Noble origin only after exhausting every other race and background, and also after numerous repeat playthroughs of those races. I think I'll just cycle through the different customization options for each race in the beginning, but ultimately I'll settle on an elf or qunari for the first spin.

My female characters typically romance other females,   I wouldn't say it makes me uncomfortable to play a female and romance a male though, just I find the males less interesting, Morrigan and Leliana are IMO far better than Alistair and Zevran, I have done Alistair though once with a Noble Female.  And I played Mass Effect 2 far too many times so I eventually hit all the male romances since I was getting bored of the females.  In Mass Effect 3 only female I finished was Traynor.  I plan on doing a female Dwarf romance for Varric in Inquisition if it's an option if not, don't plan on romancing any of the males.

3) As a male, do you feel comfortable playing as a female character? As a female, do you feel comfortable playing as a male character?

In the past(Mass Effect 2) I did play more female characters, though recently I don't enjoy them as much, I won't go as far to say as it makes me uncomfortable though just I can no longer get in to it, perhaps the juvenile fantasy of making my females plough other women just isn't interesting anymore

4) If you are white, do you ever create characters that out right do not look "white" but rather black, asian, hispanic, or multi-racial? Or do you just stick with white?

Some of my females have been a bit darker, but my males are all white, short hair with a beard,

6) Will you be comfortable romancing Vivenne if you are a white male? Do you even find Vivienne attractive? I do and I like how Bioware decided to create a black female with strong African features instead of the typical European looking female coated in brown skin.

If I choose not to romance Vivienne it's going to be because I dislike her character, not because the colour of her skin.

7) Will the majority of your Inquisitors be human? How hard or easy is it to play as an Elf or Dwarf  (and now Qunari)?

Unsure, I plan on playing at leas one Qunari, one Dwarf and one Human, don't know where I'll go from there.

3. I don't mind playing a male character.  It's a different kind of experience, so I like being able to switch back and forth.

4. I used to only ever make white characters, but I started wondering why I couldn't branch out.  Now I often make characters of various ethnicities.  My "canon" Shepard is mixed race.

5. N/A

6. Not male, but I'd love to romance Vivenne.  I think she's fascinating.

7. The majority of my Inquisitors will be anything but human.

3. Uncomfortable? No. Bored as all Hell? Yes. I can go to almost any other game if I wished to play as a male.

4. N/A

5. I am of mixed race but I play a variety of POC, rarely ever white.

6. N/A. I do think that Vivienne is completely gorgeous though.

Awesome thread. I seldom post, but this one is so fascinating I just have to add my two cents. Kudos to the one who started it! For reference purposes, I'm an older, hetero, and married white woman...

1) As a heterosexual player, do you feel comfortable having your PC who is not your sex, romance a NP who is your sex. Like me as a male playing as a female P who romanced a male NPC. Or a heterosexual female who plays as a male PC but romances a female NPC.

The great thing about RPGs is that they let you step out of your own skin and into someone else's. If the story is compelling and/or fun, then I want to experience it. That being said, I admit the first time I played a f/f romance it felt a little weird. But then, I was born in 1957 to fairly conservative parents. I think the cool thing about playing RPGs is that it enables you to step out of and stretch your comfort zone, and that follows you back into real life. At this stage, I play characters and romances that are fun and interesting and don't worry a whole lot about who is straight, gay, bi, etc. It's all about the story... That's why I had to change my mind about the Iron Bull. My first reaction was, "No, I'm so not interested in sleeping with a Texas Longhorn," but the more I learn about the character from the writers and from the character reveals, the more appealing he gets! So...I guess I will have to "ride the bull" at some point...

3) As a female, do you feel comfortable playing as a male character?

I've done it, I'm certainly not uncomfortable,  but it's not my preference. Probably because I grew up in a time when women were supposed to do exactly three things: get married, be a housewife, and raise a family. Now I have nothing against marriage and kids (I have both, though I avoided the housewife gig), but when you grow up in a world with NO women cops, women astronauts, women soldiers, etc., etc., it is unbelievably cool to be able to role-play a kick-ass woman. I generally only play men when I want to experience a story arc that's only available to men. And I don't play games that don't give me the option to play as a woman.

4) If you are white, do you ever create characters that out right do not look "white" but rather black, Asian, Hispanic, or multi-racial? Or do you just stick with white?

Most of my PCs are darker-skinned that I am, which is not to say they necessarily look "non-white". Mainly it's because I'm so white that I practically glow in the dark so why would I inflict that on my character? Also, I don't want a character that looks as close to me as I can get because then I'd have a middle-aged, out of shape woman who crochets and reads a lot and what fun would that be to play? She'd get creamed in her very first fight and that would end the game real fast! The CC in Dragon Age made creating non-white characters very difficult to make; every one I tried ended up looking like they were terminally ill or a darkspawn. Mass Effect, on the other hand, did a much better job; my female Shepherds looked either mixed-race, Indian, or Native American. So, do I prefer to play white characters? No, I prefer to play characters I enjoy looking at and that "feel right" for the game universe in which I'm playing.

6) Will you be comfortable romancing Vivienne if you are a white male? Do you even find Vivienne attractive? I do and I like how Bioware decided to create a black female with strong African features instead of the typical European looking female coated I brown skin.

Obviously I'm not a white man. Speaking as a white woman, however, I find Vivienne drop-dead gorgeous. Furthermore, I think her presence in the game as a strong black woman with African features makes the Dragon Age universe both more inclusive and immersive. And the bits and pieces we have of her character make her even more interesting to me. Whether she's a love interest or not, I anticipate playing with her in my party. A LOT!

7) Will the majority of your Inquisitors be human? How hard or easy is it to play as an Elf or Dwarf (and now Qunari)?

I don't usually play a human. My choice is usually to play an Elf. (Not sure why; probably a Tolkien thing.) But again, the story is paramount. The one race I've never played is dwarf (except the two dwarven origins just to see what they were). The backstory and culture of the dwarves has just never really appealed to me on a level that made me willing to spend hours role-playing one. Also, I like to play mages which rules them out. That said, if Varric is a LI in the inquisition, but race-gated to dwarven women, viva la dwarves!!! Never thought to play a Qunari because of how they treat their mages, but I may have to give it a try...

Once again...great thread!

2. I'm completely comfortable doing so. I like putting my imagination to the test and creating player characters of various combinations of race, sexuality, and gender. Would I feel more of an incentive to romance a male as a male? Yes, but there are times when I pursue f/m romances out of genuine interest. However, it's often very low on my priority list. I'm more likely to do a m/f or f/f romance and connect with it. Identifying as a male and being gay, respectively, and all that.

3. As a male, I'm more likely to play as a male. That being said, I'm completely comfortable playing as a female and will likely do so at some point if given the option in a game.

4. I'm white (Of the redhead persuasion. I wish I could tan  <_<) so my main characters tend to be paler. However, my most recent playthroughs have been with a black F!Hawke and an arabic M!Shep.

6. I'm a white gay male and would hit that. If that doesn't speak well for Vivienne I don't know what will.

7. My first/canon playthrough of Inquisition will be as a male human mage, but I'm expecting that most of my Inquisitors will be qunari with a human or dwarf here and there. I typically find the slender, pretty build of elves to be aesthetically displeasing, so I'll probably only have a single elf Inquisitor at some point in the future.

I made my first Mass Effect trilogy run Shepard female who romanced Kaidan and Thane (and okay, little bit of Kelly and Samantha) and I consider myself fully heterosexual male person.

It didnt feel akward at all to flirt with Kaidan in Mass Effect or Zevran in Dragon Age Origins (even though I ultimately romanced morrigan with my male Cousland).

Why? Because even though I do like to try identify with my character I never pretend to BE them. They are simply my characters (with distinct personalities if possible) that i created and decided to create some soap opera in their stories when deciding to romance someone. Of course it is fun to set yourself in your characters shoes every once in awhile but I can do the same for many other characters too. For Example I felt equally symphatetic towards Loghain and Meredith as Alistair, Isabela or Anders.

I think this topic is ultimately about how big a deal you make about different personalities, sexualities, genders, races and such dear OP.

There's a black captain America? I am intrigued...

1) If I'm playing a straight male I can usually get through the romance without killing her. However, all the female characters so far have been beyond boring so I prefer to romance males.

2) N/A

3) I usually play male characters even though I'm a heterosexual girl. Is it so I can drool over his arse? Is it because I don't like pushy women? Who knows... (Probably the arse thing though... Dayum M!Hawke  B) )

4) I'm white and have always stuck with white. I didn't really... Consider my characters skin colour until reading that question. Huh.

5) N/A

6) Not a white male... So I don't think I can comment on this question but it depends on her personality. Speaking specifically about how she looks, I think she has some nice features but overall I wouldn't call her 'sexy'.

7) My characters are always human in DA. In WoW I play Worgen (Wolf people), Night Elves (Dark (purple) skinned elves), Draenei (Blue space goats), Pandas and a few humans. TES games typically humans... Imperial or Nord unless I want to be an archer. I think I see a trend - I play RPGs as humans because perhaps I am more comfortable with them and I play whatever race looks sexy in armour in MMOs.

Perhaps I should branch out and play Elves... Or Dwarves... If they look like Thorin Oakenshield... Mm...

5. (Skipped)
6. No, I do not find her attractive. I do not like her personality, and she's going to permanently warm the bench.
7. Elves, then a Qunari, than another Elf.

4) If you are white, do you ever create characters that out right do not look "white" but rather black, asian, hispanic, or multi-racial? Or do you just stick with white?

5) If you are not white, do you normally try to create characters who match your racial identity? Or do you create a range of races?

6) Will you be comfortable romancing Vivenne if you are a white male? Do you even find Vivienne attractive? I do and I like how Bioware decided to create a black female with strong African features instead of the typical European looking female coated in brown skin.

7) Will the majority of your Inquisitors be human? How hard or easy is it to play as an Elf or Dwarf  (and now Qunari)?

1) I'm a straight female player and usually, if I am given the chance, I play female characters.  However, once in a blue moon I might play as a male and that male character is usually going to be gay.  I did play a straight male in DA:O because I wanted to see Morrigan and Leliana's romances.  I never felt it odd because I didn't see myself as the male I played and the romances was just adding to the overall story because I was not attracted to them.

3) As a female gamer, I'm quite used to playing male characters.  It doesn't bother me.  If the male character of a game is more appealing in character and story, then I'll play him.

4) When I first play games like Bioware's, I do tend to make the character I'm playing white because I'm white.  But that's just the first playthrough.  I love designing characters of all different races and colors.

6) Not a male but I do find Vivienne to be very beautiful.

7) I play as a human mostly because that's what I am and when I first play a game I like to make the experience as engrossing as possible.  I will definitely be playing a qunari though, cause they look bada** .  I'm not big on dwarfs though.  I might play an elf at a later date.

2) As a homosexual player, do you feel comfortable having your PC who is your sex, romance a NPC who is of opposite sex?

Honestly, not really. In RL I've dated men and women, but in games, I will almost always do m/m if I can, and then maybe f/f on a later playthrough. I'm not interested in RPing a heterosexual relationship, and when I've tried (dammit, Alistair), I haven't been able to finish. HOWEVER, with how big, awesome, and badass the female qunari look, I MAY consider a f/m playthrough if I can RP it as non-heteronormative as possible (sort of a "Blue girl, Pink boy" thing).

3) As a male, do you feel comfortable playing as a female character? As a female, do you feel comfortable playing as a male character?

As a transmasculine/genderqueer person, I often find playing female in RPGs intensely uncomfortable. If I want to run around a world being called "woman", "lady", and "ma'am", I'll just walk outside. For me, videogames like DA are a way to be able to play as my preferred gender, and hear people talking to/about me with the pronouns/gendered titles I feel most comfortable with. That said, I have a great appreciation for Bioware offering the option to play as a woman, and in fact, I'm more likely to buy a game if it offers that option (even if I never use it), because I think gender representation is super important, and I believe the gaming industry needs to put more effort into being welcoming and inclusive of its female audience.

4) If you are white, do you ever create characters that out right do not look "white" but rather black, asian, hispanic, or multi-racial? Or do you just stick with white?

I almost never play white if I have the option to do otherwise. The only exception is occasionally I like playing a pale-skinned, dark-haired, green-eyed character because I find that combination of features attractive. But my canon/default is almost always a dark-skinned PC. It just feels better that way for me, somehow.

6) Will you be comfortable romancing Vivenne if you are a white male? Do you even find Vivienne attractive? I do and I like how Bioware decided to create a black female with strong African features instead of the typical European looking female coated in brown skin.

If Vivienne is available for a f/f romance, I will romance her on my f/f playthrough. I think she's gorgeous and important.

7) Will the majority of your Inquisitors be human? How hard or easy is it to play as an Elf or Dwarf  (and now Qunari)?

I probably won't play human at all unless someone I want to romance is race-gated for humans only. I'll likely do elf or qunari first depending on the CC options. I'm super curious about how the rest of the world will react to a non-human inquisitor, and it just seems like missing out on a really interesting story element to play a human in this game.

The only type of romance I am unable to play as a heterosexual male gamer is male-male. I always start off my first play through as a male (usually human) and romance a female. Next I probably play another dude (Qunari? Elf? Hard to say just yet) and romance a different female. Future playthroughs are probably mixes of men and women (at least a few female playthroughs) and I have no problem romancing a dude as a female PC, and I also will do female-female romances. I spread out my playthroughs over races (DAO had about 30-40% Human, because I loved taking the throne :) and genders. I've never actually done a play through with no romance.

very interesting topic and serious replies. cool.

1 - hetero white female player here. no problem with my character romancing whichever person they fancy. I'm more likely to enjoy m/f or m/m romance vs. f/f which is sort of "meh" to me. (Sera with smaller, less pointy ears sort of looks like me. so....not going to be smooching her. I don't think   ;-)   ya never know! their voices and attitudes matter more than their sex or looks.

3 - as a female, I usually play female in solo games (Skyrim or NWN) it's so empowering to be Tombraider or a high elf with dual wielding, calling all the shots, on my own. but, in a party based game, I can be male and have lots of fun, too. I'm not locked into one character in combat. I love being Geralt in The Witcher, but so many games used to be all male, so it's fun to be my own gender when I can be.

4 - I'm all about the fantasy in an RPG. color is where I'm at! I don't limit it to normal racial colors. I was green in NWN, golden in Skyrim, purple in Morrowind, dark brown in 3rd playthrough of DAO. but ---- I do like pale pale white with blue lips colorless eyes or some version of ghostly sometimes. can I give Cole a hug?

5 - (see above) it's fantasy. I don't want to be human. what a letdown in DA2.  will elves be tall and lanky like Fenris or back to tiny Dalishness? I am very unattracted (is that a word?) to big, beefy people, so of course I'll want to play as a Quinari just for the heck of it - not the 1st play though. I'll let my subconscious decide in the character generator who I'll be - which can be a game in itself.

thanks for this thread.

I don't play as female characters.

3) As a male, do you feel comfortable playing as a female character? As a female, do you feel comfortable playing as a male character?

Honestly I don't know, it has never sparked my curiosity or interest to play as a female character.

4) If you are white, do you ever create characters that out right do not look "white" but rather black, asian, hispanic, or multi-racial? Or do you just stick with white?

I think I got a certain way I usually make my characters, admittedly mostly white, black hair, grey eyes, also because skin color was horrible in previous DA games, but I did have a ME character who looked like Vin Diesel.

6) Will you be comfortable romancing Vivenne if you are a white male? Do you even find Vivienne attractive? I do and I like how Bioware decided to create a black female with strong African features instead of the typical European looking female coated in brown skin.

Comfortable? Sure! personally no I don't find her attractive, doesn't mean my characters won't though, but she kinda seems like a B-word, it's not so much her looks that irks me, but what impression I have of her personality which I might be wrong about but right now she's most definitely at the bottom of which Companion is the greatest.

7) Will the majority of your Inquisitors be human? How hard or easy is it to play as an Elf or Dwarf  (and now Qunari)?

Easy enough basically I am trying to do this from DAO - DAII to DAI:

Elven Rogue - > Human Mage -> Dwarven Warrior.

and more or less do a variation of that.

1. All my female Wardens romanced Alistair so no.

2. Not gay myself so can't really answer.

3. Yes infact given a choice I'll always roll a female toon*save for my lone male warrior I romanced Leliana with. :P *

4. My primary toons in Dragon's Dogma,City of Heroes and D&D Online all had Asian characteristics  but my few male toons feature strong Caucasian features so I guess yes?

5. -skips-

6. Nope Cass is my grumpy honey. haven't picked a LI for my female quizzys yet.

7. 1 female elf,1 female Qunari and 1 male Qunari or Human*depending on Cass* and I just think female Elves and Tieflings are sexy and like Tieflings and Orcs in general which the Qunari remind me of. B)

Does not apply

2) As a homosexual player, do you feel comfortable having your PC who is your sex, romance a NPC who is of opposite sex?

It's not a matter of comfort, it's a matter of preference. There are very few games out there where I can not only create a female character, but a lesbian character as well. When given the choice, I will always choose for my female character to romance another woman.

3) As a male, do you feel comfortable playing as a female character? As a female, do you feel comfortable playing as a male character?

I am forced to play a male character in the majority of games I play. Again, it's not about comfort, but preference. When given the choice, I will almost always play as a woman.

4) If you are white, do you ever create characters that out right do not look "white" but rather black, asian, hispanic, or multi-racial? Or do you just stick with white?

I create all kinds of characters. I'm super white, but most of my characters are not. They are what I want to make them.

5) If you are not white, do you normally try to create characters who match your racial identity? Or do you create a range of races?

Since as I've said, I'm super white, this does not apply.

6) Will you be comfortable romancing Vivenne if you are a white male? Do you even find Vivienne attractive? I do and I like how Bioware decided to create a black female with strong African features instead of the typical European looking female coated in brown skin.

I'm a white lesbian female, does that count? I've wanted Viv as an LI from the moment I saw her. Do I think she will be an option?  probably not... However if she is an option, she will probably be the first woman I romance.

7) Will the majority of your Inquisitors be human? How hard or easy is it to play as an Elf or Dwarf  (and now Qunari)?

I can't decide what I want to play 1st. I keep bouncing between human, elf, and qunari... Nothing against dwarf, but, I've never really been able to get into them.  I'll play the other three at least once though.

Oooh, this is a fun game. Heterosexual white male neckbeard, reporting for duty!

1) Yes. Have done so several times. I tend not to view my characters as myself, so it doesn't really bother me any more than ones of my own orientation (tend to find the actual romance scenes awkward regardless -- kinda voyeurism that I'm not into).

2) N/A. Hetero.

3) Yes. Probably too much so, especially in MMOs.

4) Yes, but that can be misleading. Had a black dwarf warrior in DA:O, a medium-bronze Hawke to follow him, and my FF14 character was a dark-skinned female (Hellsguard Roegadyn, too, making her the rarest of all combinations). Also used the Asian face preset in Fallout: New Vegas for another example I can think of offhand. But at the same time, most video game characters look kinda Anglo, don't they? Or maybe I just can't tell...

5) N/A. I'm one pasty sonofabitch.

6) Sure, why not. She's the most attractive of the female companions, though her sense of style is questionable at best.

7) Probably, yes. I find it hard to make dwarves and elves that I like in most games. Might make a female qunari for the badass factor, though.

Say, has anybody pulled some stats on these responses yet? While I don't think it's at all representative of the general population who plays games, I do think it would be interesting to see how the community feel about these things.
