1) As a heterosexual player, do you feel comfortable having your PC who is not your sex, romance a NPC who is your sex. Like me as a male playing as a female PC who romances a male NPC. Or a heterosexual female who plays as a male PC, but romances a female NPC.

I do this literally all the time - the majority of my PCs are heterosexual males. I'm actually more comfortable playing a male romancing a female than a female romancing a male. I'm not sure why - I just usually like the female romance arcs more.

2) As a homosexual player, do you feel comfortable having your PC who is your sex, romance a NPC who is of opposite sex?

Not applicable.

3) As a female, do you feel comfortable playing as a male character?

I prefer playing males most of the time because I'm already female - I know what it's like. While I love that being a kickass woman is an option in these games and I want more believable, multidimensional female protagonists in the gaming industry on a whole, when given a choice I usually opt to play males. At least for my canon or first go-around. I'd rather play something other than me, and it's easier to step out of myself if I play as a guy. Plus, unless I'm an elf, beards. I love me some beards.

I occasionally play females and there's a few games where I actually prefer them for my canon, but oftentimes when I try it feels more like a self-insert. There's nothing innately wrong with this, but I prefer to play a character rather than be the character, as it were.

4) If you are white, do you ever create characters that out right do not look "white" but rather black, asian, hispanic, or multi-racial? Or do you just stick with white?

I'm white as Wonder Bread, but I create POC characters far more often than I create white characters, actually. I do stick with lore, but to me the DA lore leaves a lot of leeway, so my mage Amell was Rivani and ended up looking like my avatar; I even made my Hawke in my Amell's canon show some traces of Rivani ancestry since they were second cousins. Both my Shepards are multiracial.

My reasons for this are multitude, but primarily it's that I'm already white - I know what it's like to be white. I'd rather play somebody new, not myself. (See a pattern here?) Plus I see faces similar to my own everywhere in media. It gets boring. I therefore find more freedom in creating POC characters, even when they're elves and dwarves. I don't do this all the time, and do have a few white characters, but they're actually atypical for me.

5) If you are not white, do you normally try to create characters who match your racial identity? Or do you create a range of races?

Not applicable.

6) Will you be comfortable romancing Vivenne if you are a white male? Do you even find Vivienne attractive? I do and I like how Bioware decided to create a black female with strong African features instead of the typical European looking female coated in brown skin.

Not applicable, though I will say as someone who plays males a lot, I have zero problem with romancing Vivienne if she's available. It comes down to if her personality appeals to the types of characters I end up playing. And I think she's gorgeous and am glad we have an example of a Rivaini who's got obvious African features. Kind of validating for me, because my Amell is Rivaini with African features. I once, some years ago, had someone comment on a drawing I did of Amell and tried to convince me Rivaini didn't have "Negroid" features. Ho boy. <_<

7) Will the majority of your Inquisitors be human? How hard or easy is it to play as an Elf or Dwarf  (and now Qunari)?

I love playing all the races at least once, and my first Inquisitor will be a dwarf. My logic being my first Warden was Dalish and Hawke had to be human. (I want to save qunari for my fourth run, after the other races). When I was a teenager, I almost never played humans as I found them boring. Now I actually enjoy playing humans, but not necessarily more or less than any other race. Whatever I get good ideas for, really. I did every Origin all the way through at least once, and prefer it when there are race options in a game - whether it's species like elves and dwarves, or just different human races and ethnicities.

Well I'm bisexual so points 1 and 2 are irrelevant to me.

3) As a female, do you feel comfortable playing as a male character?

As a female in real life I prefer playing as women simply because representation of strong female leads in other media is sorely lacking. It makes me feel more validated, you know? But I happily play male characters as well. I like seeing the differences in how the other characters react to male vs. female characters and I like trying out romances that are only available to male characters. (Morrigan's romance was my favorite romance in Origins!)

4) If you are white, do you ever create characters that out right do not look "white" but rather black, asian, hispanic, or multi-racial? Or do you just stick with white?

I'm white and I do tend to have fairer skinned pcs but it kind of depends. In Origins some of the families where fair skinned so having a dark skinned Cousland for example was kind of awkward. In DA2 where it didn't matter I'd say 6 of my 8 Hawkes had darker skin. In Mass Effect my Shepard looks multi-racial mostly looking middle eastern. I just thought in a futuristic story a woman of color should be the savior of mankind because current fantasy and science fiction stories there are rarely any. I liked this one so much I had a hard time seeing any other Shepards I created as the "real" Shepard.

6) Will you be comfortable romancing Vivenne if you are a white male? Do you even find Vivienne attractive?

Well, this kind of applies to me. If she is a LI yes, definitely. I think she is the best looking companion by far. Her outfit is kind of silly but I dig it. I could sort of hear her voice in one of the demos and I swooned. She's gorgeous.

7) Will the majority of your Inquisitors be human? How hard or easy is it to play as an Elf or Dwarf  (and now Qunari)?

For some reason I prefer playing as a human. (I'm kind of boring) But I played every Origin in the first game at least once and though neither are my "canon" playthrough the two dwarven origins are my favorite by far. I haven't decided on my canon Inquisitor but I'm sure this time she'll be either a dwarf or qunari. (I've wanted to play as a female qunari since seeing the concept art  <3   ) I'll play each race at least once though because I like seeing the differences.

1. My canon play through is always a human male warrior. And I romance the most difficult (looking at you Morrigan) of all the female LIs. Except for Liara. However, after that I check out all the different combinations, just to see the dialog. I am weird that way.

2. N/A

3. I am perfectly fine playing as a chick, but at the back of mind I have this thing. When playing as a girl I assume I am seeing some one else's story.

4. I am not a Caucasian, but not brown either. Fair enough to be passed on for a tanned white guy. And most of my PCs are fair or my skin tone. Its usually like this, if I am going for a nice guy I go white. But if I am going to be a bad ass I choose darker tones.

5.Again same thing as above. Race / racism is not a very big thing in India. We don't have races we have skin tones. Fair people in the north near the Himalayas and darker toned people down south and sweet caramel in between. :)

6. Not sure how many Afro Americans have African features. But no I don't find her attractive. She has that pompous air around her. Even Cassandra is not white and neither is scribbles but them I like.

7. Like I said, every combination. But there will be two humans. A mage and a warrior. A dwarwen rogue, a qunari warrior and an elven mage. There are 8 romances and I seriously do not have the time to pursue them all. Work and all :(. However, I will have both the human males go for Cassandra. I want to see what her reaction is when she approached by a royal and when by a mage.

2) As a homosexual player, do you feel comfortable having your PC who is your sex, romance a NPC who is of opposite sex?

Yeah, why not? In both Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age 2 I romanced a guy. I just go with whatever character I like best; it's just a game, after all. Though if there were two characters that I liked equally and one was male and one was female, I would choose female, of course.

3) As a male, do you feel comfortable playing as a female character? As a female, do you feel comfortable playing as a male character?

I feel comfortable playing as one, but I'd rather not, honestly. I find it really hard to identify with a male character in most games.

4) If you are white, do you ever create characters that out right do not look "white" but rather black, asian, hispanic, or multi-racial? Or do you just stick with white?

I do create characters that are not white, but I would not be able to honestly say I've ever created one of my primary characters to be not white.

6) Will you be comfortable romancing Vivenne if you are a white male? Do you even find Vivienne attractive? I do and I like how Bioware decided to create a black female with strong African features instead of the typical European looking female coated in brown skin.

Not a male, but I do find her attractive. I wouldn't romance her though. Not my type. (In that regard, I'm planning on romancing Josephine.)

7) Will the majority of your Inquisitors be human? How hard or easy is it to play as an Elf or Dwarf  (and now Qunari)?

I don't think I'll play as elf or dwarf that often. Human will be my second playthrough. Qunari will be my first. Depends on how many times I'd like to reply after I finish those, I guess.

I feel fairly alright with it. I'm perfectly capable of separating what's real from what's not. I can get immersed all I like but I still know I'm not the Fem-Quisitor so I'm simply just watching the story of her. So can't say I'm uncomfortable with it.

2) As a homosexual player, do you feel comfortable having your PC who is your sex, romance a NPC who is of opposite sex?

Not applicable.

3) As a male, do you feel comfortable playing as a female character? As a female, do you feel comfortable playing as a male character?

As stated above, I'm fairly fine it though I've done it less lately. It's odd, once upon a time I usually only played female characters. Mostly when I was younger and still trying to figure out who I was, now I'm fully aware of who I am and don't play a female character that often but when I do, I'm not uncomfortable.

4) If you are white, do you ever create characters that out right do not look "white" but rather black, asian, hispanic, or multi-racial? Or do you just stick with white?

Uhh... Sometimes? Usually my characters are more white because well... It's what I identify as. Call it what you will but subconsciously, characters I imagine almost always are white by default because that's what I am and it's what my mind considers the norm. (Yeah, yeah I know other things are normal but you know what I mean). That said, I do sometimes make darker skinned characters.

Certainly would be fine with it. I find her plenty attractive and she'll probably be my Trevelyan's romance if she is available (If not he'll go for Cassandra). I also appreciate Bioware's choice, I liked the looks of Isabella in DA2 quite a bit  but I like the "new" look that Vivienne has.

7) Will the majority of your Inquisitors be human? How hard or easy is it to play as an Elf or Dwarf  (and now Qunari)?

Ah... Well, my first will be human and after that I'll bounce between the races. It's what I did in Origins and it's what I'll do here.

1) male heterosexual here. I romanced both Alistair and Zevran as female. Zevran felt more fun. Alistair was painfully awkward. But that's because of his character.
I tend to like the female romances better. I didn't like Anders or Fenris at all, so I had no interest in romancing them. Iron Bull could be very much fun.

3) Yes, I often play females.

4) Sometimes hispanic, sometimes generic dark. Never played full out black before. I find the choice of playing asian rather limited. Also, I don't feel asians suit the setting of Dragon Age so well, and even blacks can be very iffy (i.e. the whole Cousland family is white).

6) I find Vivienne physically very beautiful, but her character turns me off. I never understood how somebody who doesn't seem of Orlais origin could rise so high in court, but I'm sure I'll learn of the reason in time. Right now, I can't imagine a romance with an arrogant, classist harpye like Vivienne, but we will see.

7) Probably human, because it's "easiest" and standard, but I am sure I will try elf and qunari. I have never played dward and have little interest to do so -- even if I like Sigrun and Varric.

In general, I find that the race should make sense to the setting and the story. And as Orlais and Fereldan are in my mind the equivalent of medieval France and England, I think the majority being white makes sense.
Female romances turn me on more, but for Bioware games, story is more important than being turned on.

I find it very surprising to read on the one side here that a lot of people are pretty much open to everybody, and then there is much sadness and anger about the sexuality and preference of the companions.

If everybody has no problems playing everything, why make such a big deal who gets what? If you want to romance Serah, just roll a female!

So there's no reason to complain on the forum.

- It's a roleplaying game.  If there's content for every type of character, I usually use it.  It makes for a more diverse and interesting play. I love playing female characters.

2) As a homosexual player, do you feel comfortable having your PC who is your sex, romance a NPC who is of opposite sex?

-See above.

3) As a male, do you feel comfortable playing as a female character? As a female, do you feel comfortable playing as a male character?

-I had three Hawkes that were female.  And two Shepards.  Again, it's more enjoyable on multiple playthroughs to have a different unique experience.

4) If you are white, do you ever create characters that out right do not look "white" but rather black, asian, hispanic, or multi-racial? Or do you just stick with white?

- In Mass Effect, I had a black Shepard and an asian Shepard.  Had a black Hawke. Again, it's a role playing game.  Playing only white males is boring.

5) If you are not white, do you normally try to create characters who match your racial identity? Or do you create a range of races?

Skin color doesn't mean much.  If Vivienne's personality meshes with any of my Inquisitors, of any race or ethnicity, I'll romance her.

7) Will the majority of your Inquisitors be human? How hard or easy is it to play as an Elf or Dwarf  (and now Qunari)?
-
I plan on giving every race a go.  I was going to start with a human, but after seeing the Qunari, I'm going with a Qunari two hander first go round.  Only fault is that I won't need the Bull that much who seems like a blast.

Though people may play through many times and not mind it one way or the other, many have a particular "canon" playthrough style and a preferred option for that character. For example, my canon playthrough is male tanky battlemage each time, thus far romancing other mages. I have another playthrough with power-player female rogues -- the queen of Ferelden and the viscount of Kirkwall, respectively. I would have to break my traditions in order to get there, and that's disappointing either way.

Basically, the combination matters. I don't want to make a character with a sword and a character who can throw fireballs. I want a character who throws fireballs between sword slashes.

 A White Lesbian Asexual

1) As a heterosexual player, do you feel comfortable having your PC who is not your sex, romance a NPC who is your sex. Like me as a male playing as a female PC who romances a male NPC. Or a heterosexual female who plays as a male PC, but romances a female NPC.- N/A

2) As a homosexual player, do you feel comfortable having your PC who is your sex, romance a NPC who is of opposite sex?It took me awhile to comes to terms with who i was, and usually in the past, romancing anyone meant you had to be straight.  i like playing female characters so sometimes I do a straight playthrough, but if possible, I like to romance men as men, and romance women as women. I am actually very glad that the straight male character has no appeal at all to me, so that won't be a worry. It's weird but m/m was the first introduction I had in any media that had LGBT content. So the only guys I play are gay guys. The hardest character to play is straight men. I always feel like it is slightly creepy.

3) As a male, do you feel comfortable playing as a female character? As a female, do you feel comfortable playing as a male character? The choice to play female in most games is fairly new, and often absent. I like video games. I can play guys. In the past, I even preferred it as I had a lot of issues regarding being a woman. These days, I usually just give it less marks for being the same guy over and over with a different backstory. in Bioware games, I don't mind playing guys as long as they are gay.

4) If you are white, do you ever create characters that out right do not look "white" but rather black, asian, hispanic, or multi-racial? Or do you just stick with white?  Yes. I mean my side characters are more so but even my canon characters are fairly diverse.

5) If you are not white, do you normally try to create characters who match your racial identity? Or do you create a range of races? N/A

6) Will you be comfortable romancing Vivenne if you are a white male? Do you even find Vivienne attractive? I do and I like how Bioware decided to create a black female with strong African features instead of the typical European looking female coated in brown skin. I mean I am a woman, but one reason I am trying not to get too invested in Josie OR Sera is the possibility that Vivienne will be available

7) Will the majority of your Inquisitors be human? How hard or easy is it to play as an Elf or Dwarf  (and now Qunari)? I love dwarves. i feel fantasy has done them an injustice by making them so stereotypical it hurts. So I often make dwarves, but Qunari is my biggest intrest now. I want to be a strong woman.  and she seems one of the first oppurtunities to make that a possibility. I really like Dalish elves. Humans would be more intresting if they were not always nobility. I really want to play an Avaar or a Chasind, but i never was fond of the Noble who becomes more of a noble story line.

1) Yes, I am somewhat of a completionist, so I actually try to play through both genders romancing each available LI.   It doesn't really "bother" me to romance the same gender, however, I would say its 'awkward'.    Not so much in a social stigma sense, but that its odd romancing characters that don't look or act in a manner attractive to me.    For instance, I found Fenris(Broody) and Anders(Moody) to be completely unlikable characters and have yet to complete a playthrough with them as the LIs.   I would say though that I play a female 90% of the time, and most of my romances are with women NPCs.

2) Doesn't apply and 3) I kind of answered above.

4) I am white, but I don't actually like bright white skin(being fair and red-haired), so most of my characters looked either fairly tanned, and many look Asian in appearance.   My characters tend to vary quite a bit.   Not sure I have ever created a darker skinned character in Dragon Age, though I have done so in SWTOR certainly.

5) Doesn't apply

6) Will have no trouble romancing Vivenne based on what I know.   Certainly is attractive enough, but honestly physical appearance is literally only 30% of what I find "attractive".    For me, its much more about their personalities.   I found Isabella much more physically attractive than Merrill, for instance, but Merrill has a sweet innocence about her that I just adore more than than the sexy flirtatious types.   Hence, in most playthroughs I find Merrill too tempting to romance.

7) I typically play non-human characters almost exclusively when available.   Though, I am not against playing humans.

Comments :  A lot of how people approach characters and identity is dependent upon how they view role-playing.   In one camp, they tend to place themselves in the role of the character.   In this case, they typically don't play characters outside their own race, gender, identity.   In the other camp, they tend to view the character as whole and separate individual where they are "played" according to how their character would react.    They tend to favor more exotic races, and genders that they find attractive.    I am in the latter camp.    I tend to develop an idea about how the character is going to respond to events that may or may not correlate with my own thoughts.   Example:  One character I made was a confrontational dwarf who mistrusted magic or anything that seemed like magic.   He responded to events in the game based on those pre-conditions.   Me, as a player, tend to make mage characters, so that dwarf was a huge departure from what I would typically play.

Sexual Orientation:

1) As a heterosexual player, do you feel comfortable having your PC who is not your sex, romance a NPC who is your sex. Like me as a male playing as a female PC who romances a male NPC. Or a heterosexual female who plays as a male PC, but romances a female NPC.

2) As a male, do you feel comfortable playing as a female character? As a female, do you feel comfortable playing as a male character?

3) If you are not white, do you normally try to create characters who match your racial identity? Or do you create a range of races?

4) Do you even find Vivienne attractive?

5) Will the majority of your Inquisitors be human? How hard or easy is it to play as an Elf or Dwarf  (and now Qunari)?

Sexual orientation : I'm straight. My name is.. ugh, who cares ?  :P

1)  I can romance men and women. I don't identify with my female characters. I'm like an author who writes a story and my female character has her own personality, independent from me. I enjoyed both Alistair and Kaidan.

2) I love playing both gender since Mass effect. I played more female characters because it was totally new and awesome for me a few years ago. My first Bioware's game was M2, and my first PC was female for my first playthrough. I don't know why I chose to pick this gender the first time to be honest, it was totally inconscious. Maybe I desperately needed a  ' serious ' female hero given how it was rare. If it weren't for Miranda, I would have probably totally ignored maleshep by the way. My canon shep is my Johanna Shepard. She's badass, she's awesome. I put a lot of thoughts into her, I love what I created. I wrote all my stories with her. I Loved my female warden too. So yes, I'd say I'm totally comfortable.

3) Never played a black character in DAO. All white. ( I'm comfortable playing white guys since I'm used to play them since my childhood ) The dark skin, hair and black features in the CC were garbage. The same in all the Mass effect episodes. I tried to create pretty asians, yeah-no, garbage again.  I tried to create some good hispanic characters but nothing to my tastes. ( It was very difficult to create a good maleshep in my opinion.. ) No, really, I chose a blonde guy every single time in both DAO and Mass effect. Why ? I have no idea, besides the fact that white guys looked better in the game. DAII was the first time I decided to create a black character and I still wasn't totally satisfied with the color skin ( lightning ) even if it was better.

Now thanks to the frosbite engine, I will probably enjoy for the first time playing a black PC. :D  Which will probably lead me to play mostly a male inquisitor unlike Mass effect. And this time all my characters are going to be black ! - Awesome !  B)

4) Omg, of course, Vivienne is a goddess.

5) Yes, I think the majority of my inquisitors will be human, even if I'll definitely play all the races with different stories.

1) No problem here. I'm male and I romanced both Anders and Fenris with female Hawke, Alistair with female Warden, Garrus and Kaidan as FemShep. I honestly find it easier to roleplay a heterosexual relation as an opposite gender, than roleplaying a lesbian. The only such playthrough, was a female Shepard romancing Liara.

A gay romance would be even harder for me to do. I can imagine what a woman finds attractive about a man, but it goes beyond my imagination as to what a man finds attractive about another man.

2) N/A

3) I definately do. It was weird at first - a completely different roleplaying experience. Now I do it quite frequently.

4) I stick with white. I don't even consider it much usually. When creating a female character, I tend to choose the appearance that is attractive to me - because I want to play an attractive PC and only white females are truely attractive to me. When creating a male I try to create a protagonist which will be easiest to identify with, and I choose white instinctively.

5) N/A

6) If she is a LI I probably will. I'm not attracted to her, but that doesn't mean that my Inquisitor will not. Besides, looks aren't everything, especially when it comes to in-game romances.

7) I doubt the majority will be human. In DA/D&D I play elves first, then humans, then dwarves. I will probably play all races this time around, just as I did in Origins.

1. I do this a decent amount with my female characters, so I would say I feel pretty comfortable with it happening.

3. As a guy, I actually play a lot of female characters. I tend to play to play characters that are different from myself, and I already get to be a guy every day in the real world.

4. I'm white and most of my characters are also white with a few of them being Asian. This is assuming that I am playing a race that has the same skin tones as humans do.

6. For me attractiveness has a lot to do with personality of which I'm not all that certain what Vivienne is like. From a looks standpoint I would say she's pretty, and I would potentially have my Inquisitor romance her(assuming it's an option).

7. The majority wont Human be due to the mentioned wanting to play something different from myself. Not sure what my 'main' Inquisitor will be.
