It just seems so cruel to make him even hotter than before (thanks, Frostbite 3!) and then not give us all a shot at hitting that. It's like the Inquisition is a dessert buffet and the chocolate cheesecake has a 'property of Bianca' flag on it, only she left an hour ago and shows no sign of returning for it.

That's honestly one of the funniest things I've read on BSN!

It's also relevant to my interests.

"Is... is anyone gonna eat that? I mean, because if nobody else wants to eat that, you know, I'd... uh... I'd like a little nibble. Kthnxbai."

We need more women in the game showing their tats. Give me under-boob at the very least.

So who was it that decided that men should shave their chests? Varric proves a little chest hair is a yummy thing ...

I have this horrible feeling my Inquisitor is going to have the spoon half way to her mouth when Bianca walks back in. And then she'll be all 'BUT YOU WERE WASTING CHEESECAKE AND ANYWAY I THOUGHT HE WAS SINGLE!'

(... I think that metaphor got away from me somewhere.)

  • Varric: Rivaini, stop looking at my chest. My eyes are up here.
  • Isabela: But the chest hair...
  • Varric: Do you know how much I suffer under your gaze? I am a person, not an object!
  • Isabela: Uh, Varric?
  • Varric: (Laughs) Just shitting you.

Iron Bull as well. Why don't I hear anything about the oversexualization of men?

I don't like this double standard, cleavage on a woman is sexualization, but on a man, it's apparently okay -_-

He'll have to cover it up if he wants to do anything besides warming the bench, I'm not saving the world with strippers.

I know you too are probably joking, but I can't deny that this kinda irked me.

If we had any females dressed ala Isabela, Morrigan, (circa dragon age origins) Samara, or even Miranda in DAI, there would be incessant talk about oversexualization and pandering to "the male gaze".

Varric's outfit also doesn't make sense if you apply the realism/immersion argument. ( You know the same one people use to discredit most of the sexy female designs)

Even if he is a ranged fighter, having your chest completely exposed like that is not smart, and being in the extremely cold locations would obviously be a problem as well.

Look, I don't object to Varric's design at all, it's just that I'm really annoyed at the double standard concerning female character designs in general. We should be able to have women showing skin (cleavage, underboob, LEGS!, etc) w/o there being such a backlash.

Just really wished there were similar designs for some of the females in the game.

I'm okay with it if the character is a mage. I wouldn't be a fan of female warriors showing cleavage though.

Whoever it was, s/he is my arch nemesis. I flagrantly flaunt my chest hair with the lowest v-necks I can find, dammit to anyone who finds hair 'gross'!

*highfives*

I'm at a point where not letting us romance Varric is akin to the same level of amusement the biodevs get with never ever showing us Tali's face...

What badly Photoshopped picture? I don't know what you're talking about! Plausible deniability!

Yeah, I don't mind female mages or even rogues showing a bit of skin since they aren't supposed to get hit anyways (or dodge most blows) and are generally squishier than warriors.

Women are sexualized constantly. Men are sexualized almost never. It'd be one thing if there was an equal playing field here, but there's not.

As a guy with some chest hair (about the same as Varric) who is pretty short (but nowhere near Varric's height) and about 50 lbs skinnier than Varric (and not as muscular), I am greatly pleased to have a character in a game displaying a flowing manly mane of chest hair. It's the ultimate panty dropper. It gives me hope that someday us men with luscious locks of chest hair will be seen as sexy as we are. It is my dream that we are sexualized as much as Bioware was done with Isabela and more.

Especially because it's debatable whether an exposed chest on a man is inherently sexual, or perceived that way by everybody.  I always saw Varric's open shirt as simply an aspect of his whole rogueish persona.  It was only when I came onto the BSN that I found there are people who consider it sexy.

Considering that dudes can typically walk around shirtless without causing a scene, it's usually not considered inherently sexual, to my knowledge. But a woman walking around shirtless? *emergency sirens blare, children scream, cats screech, cars crash*

In all seriousness though, I agree on the roguish persona thing.

At this point in time, an exposed chest on a male character is simply not going to be received the same way as an exposed chest on a female character. Given that the female character is way more likely to be reduced to nothing but her breasts and what creepy things dudebros want to do with them. I could go off on a tangent about how sexual objectification is still sexual objectification even if your female character beats people up but it's late and I'm tired.

It is interesting and rather ironic to see the double standard at work here. A man can show off his chest and that is perfectly fine but when a woman does it, it is heretical, politically incorrect, objectification, practical concerns, etc.

Talk about selective equality. When it suits you, it is equal. When its not, its fine to have impracticality and objectification.

First off, both men and women get objectified. The same applies to video game male and female characters. It just so happens that most men who get objectified have the common sense to not take it seriously while women stir up a racket.

Practically speaking, I don't think that outfit should even count as an armor. No good armor exposes the heart and chest of the wearer. So if Varric needs to wear it, he can wear it while he is in Skyhold or just visiting places and not expecting combat.

Maybe if Varric is a mage he can cover himself in magical armor like Rock Armor or Arcane Barrier but he is a dwarf.

As for the claims that this suits his roguish character and his class as a rogue, then why Sera and Cole have no cleavage exposing armor ? Both of them are rogues after all. Sera is carefree and is all about the 'right now' so exposed armor would make sense, no ? Why have we not seen any cleavage exposing armor for the Inquisitor ? Inquisitors can be rogues.

What about characters like Josephine ? She is a diplomatic adviser after all and she should not have to worry about armors. Yet she is all covered up nicely.

I sincerely hope that either one of two things happen.

1) Varric has an alternative armor design that the player can choose to use.

2) We have some cleavage and / or midriff exposing armors and/or outfits options for Inquisitors, for the companions and the advisers.

Because it just seems hypocritical on epic scale not to have them in game. B)

I am seriously going to be so damned upset if he's not a bisexual romance.  But it just seems so unlikely.  I'm trying so hard to keep my expectations low, but I'm just loving everything about his design.

The amount of men/male characters who are objectified or put into sexy, impractical outfits is far below the amount of female characters who are, especially in video games. It is not the same.

A lot of people who use your argument bring up male characters with hulking muscles or exposed chests as evidence that they are portrayed as sexual objects just as much as women. This is not the case. Most of these characters are created by straight men. These characters are most frequently the power fantasies of theirs, certainly not a projection of their sexual tastes or an attempt to cater to the sexual tastes of others.

In Varric's case, considering he was not a romance in DA2 nor was he expected to be liked so much, his outfit was likely intended to portray roguishness. And he is a rogue.

And Vivienne has an outfit with cleavage, yet very few people here have raised a fuss, so I think your words are even more wasted.
