I was wondering what a proper build for a DPS sword and shield be like? What points and specializations should I invest in to have my warrior inflict as much damage as possible.

As I recall, at least:

STR: 42 - to wear Massive armors
DEX: 26 - for Shield mastery
Cunning: 16 - for skills

Recommended:

WILL: 20-30 - for fuel during battles
Mgc: nothing extra, but I may be forgetting about Skills or Specializations
CON: 20 - for surviving heavy hitters.

I prefer to select Champion & Templar for Specs, as both tiers are helpful for me. And if on the PC, the Character Respec mod for re-arranging attributes as desired.

I personally prefer dual wield for DPS. And boy, have I tried to make an DPS weapon and shield warrior. It's not easy. I would recomment champion for buffs and berserker for damage. Templars is good, but I prefer to leave it to an fellow warrior in the party.

My personal preference for stats is to invest on strenght and constituition. Like it was said, 26 dex for shield mastery. Around 30-35 points of stamina should do.

In Awakening, some of the abilities require a good Willpower score, so you might put points there after getting to 42-26. Spirit Warrior is a bit OP, but it is the specialization you want in Awakening.

The more you invest in STR higher would be the physical damage output. Investing every point in STR is optimal in that regard, but depending on how you want to play and what your party composition is going to be, you might want to throw the odd point here and there as mentioned above.

For a decent sustained DPS, it is generally best to use basic attacks, although when the situation demands, using the stun and knockdown effects of the offensive shield talents is a no brainer.

The specializations that provides the most in terms of raw damage potential are Berserker and Reaver. But depending on how much crowd control and support options you have in your party as a whole, Champion may or may not be a better choice than Reaver. Same with Templar; if you have other anti-magic options in your active party, then some other specialization may be more beneficial. So, it's better to pick specializations keeping in mind the practicalities. If you have the bases covered, Berserk and Aura of Pain is the best bet though.

Using party wide buffs is extremely useful if you want to maximize damage. Bringing at least one high-CUNN rogue singing Song of Courage and a mage with multiple weapon enchantments and Haste is quite a large amount of boost to your net damage output. In addition to that, consider having Precise Striking and Blood Thirst sustained on the PC.

Swords with damage enchantments double the damage for runes of the same damage type; e.g. Topsider's Honour with coldiron runes against undead or Maric's Blade with silverites against darkspawn. With 3 GM runes that's 60 damage from runes on top of the sword's damage, which makes it well worth it to switch swords before entering certain dungeons.

Undead aren't as ubiquitous as darkspawn - only a couple hundred in the whole game vs. some 1100 darkspawn - but in some areas their concentration is so high that it makes an undead-busting sword useful to have. E.g. Redcliffe and the Elven Ruins. Revenants are not affected, unfortunately.

To tell the truth i don't find the "weapon and shield" skill tree usefull for DPS (because is a tad slower than both dual welding and two handed, and single targeted skills don't help too much), i use it only for tanking and go for the easy part: Templar + Reaver with main at strenght, secondaries at both Dex and Const plus enough Cunning to purchase survival.

But making a Warrior into a DPS usually involves Champion + Berserker, so i guess that build will work. Also since you are aiming just for DPS you don't need that much constitution, neither cunning (that's for tanks) so the build would be

Main: Strenght

Secondary: Dex (for criticals)

Secondary: Willpower (for shield moves)
