That's pretty much to not angar the brick and mortar guys. If a game was available digitally before they could sell it in stores, there's a good chance they'd retaliate by giving the game poor in-store exposure. Digital sales are important, but don't underestimate the "my nephew wants a new game for his Gamebox Nintendo" crowd wandering into stores and picking up what looks shiny.

I imagine there's also a large number of people who window shop at games stores then go home and place an on line order for the cheaper price. The Stores don't like it obviously but it means having a good store presence brings in that crowd to the Publishers, so they need to make nice with the stores for that.

How broken would the game have been if they had to ship by Oct 7? Is Frostbite that big of a pain in the ass? Like the two games EA were shipping on that engine were delayed so that has to have something to do with it.

Also I'd rather that Triple A publishers not announce a release date until they are sure the team can hit it. It comes off as just a vague number to drive up pre orders whenever they play the Delay for polish card. Every bloody publisher does this & no matter how many times it happens it's still as annoying as the last.  (WATCH DOGS!)

Don't get me wrong I don't want my games to be broken at launch (BF4!) just to meet a deadline, if it needs an extension for Bug fixing then do it. But could you not announce a Date MONTHS before release, wait until said release date if breathing down your neck then go "Delay!" Just feels like I'm being jerked around.

I imagine if it is a problem with Frostbite it will more be that it's an entire new engine that likely has it's own unique foibles and quirks that you need to get to grips with by well, doing. They might also have caused problems with time estimates on how long to fix a bug, such a situation would be one of those problems that only really comes into play then this time round because after this they know it. They know it's unique foibles and so on. They also know how long to estimate for bug fixing.  I'm just guessing really I have no idea of the reality but it would make sense to me *shrug*

You know, just once, I'd like to wake up one morning, turn on the computer, and see on the front page video game news that a game has been PUSHED FORWARD in its release date.  That's right, it's been....sent to the front of the release date line.   But nope, it's nothing but bad news in the gaming industry as of late.

It feels like that one episode of Rocko's Modern Life...which one was it again?  Oh...that's right!

This is one thing something like Best Buy has been having an issue with, people come into the store and use it as an in person demo and then they go and buy it on amazon. Essentially they are paying to get amazon customers.

OT: I read an article about a retailer that was trying to discourage this by making customers pay $5 when they walked into the store, if they actually bought something, they got that $5 back.

If a store ever tried to pull that on me, I would promptly walk out the door right then and there.

Can't imagine that went well   People usually don't like being treated like potential thieves at the door ;)

The Evil Within was actually pushed forward by a week, from October 21st to October 14th, just last week.

Yep, it's also something that's basically putting a lot of small specialty stores out of business. Many, many years ago, I took some after school, keep the kids of the streets kind of classes. In this case, model airplane building. The instructor was the guy who owned the local photography store, which was a good business at the time. I'd still talk to him once in a while all these years later when I go back home to visit family (small town, you bump into people randomly all the time). Well, recently he's been thinking about winding down and selling the store. But it's not as healthy a business as it was ten years ago, which in his experience is largely because people treat his store as Amazon's shoow room. They come in, test out the gear, ask questions of him and his well trained staff, then go home and buy it online to save 5%.

Retailers will want a date won't they.

A date gives marketers and purchasers a target to aim for.

So it makes sense for studios to give one that they think makes sense, with a little wiggle room.

Though Mass Effect 4 is already on Amazon, so they clearly don't care too much for the details.

A wash of studios have delayed and pushed back launches with next-gen (now current gen)

In the scheme of things, 6 weeks is a minor course correction.

If polish is what they're aiming for, and considering their lofty goal, one extra month is short.

But, it's nice they got a little bit more time right before Xmas.

EDIT: And sass

How would one go about requesting sass in a job posting? I assume flat out saying it will just bring out the try-hards and posers. Is this what people mean when they fluff up postings with "we value an informal environment"?

I've done this. From the consumer's standpoint, it makes a lot of sense.

But on the other hand, Far Cry 4 is also coming out on November 18, I'll get to pick up and play both kickass games at the same time.
