For me, I think it's incidentally related to the trope issue that the "knightly/valiant" type usually ends up straight. It just so happens that it's actually not really my type.

Oh I thought we were only talking about physical appearances  Scratch both Cullen and Seb off my list then if we're taking personality into account

There actually has thus far never been a DA LI I would actually want to date in real life. Blackwall could be the first.

It's definitely part of their aesthetic as well, though. All the straight male LIs also happen to be white, which I think plays into the whole "knightly" image (because people usually think blonde European dude when they think of medieval knights).

Honestly I'm not even really sure what you're talking about anymore.

All I'm saying is that Alistair and Cullen (and to a lesser extent, Sebastian) fit an archetype that is typically only written as straight. Both appearance (including aesthetic) and personality are factors.

I think that type kind of does show in their appearance, though? Especially Alistair and Cullen looked extremely similar, to me. They're both about the same build, about the same age, both not too masculine (like Iron Bull, any dwarf, etc) or too pretty (like Dorian, most elves). Sebastian is a bit prettier and I think that's why he appeals to me a little more, but his aesthetic is still pretty similar, to me.

But I lean towards liking pretty boys, which is why these guys are down on my list a bit, but still above others like Iron Bull and Varric.

I agree with the first part (though that has nothing to do with WHO might find them attractive, but merely how their writers are willing to represent them).

I'm confused about the second part though... their appearance and personality are a factor in what?

Um, Cullen is almost 20 years older than Alistair. 15 at least.

I don't know what you mean by their "type" showing in their "appearance." I mean yes a "knight type" is usually a traditionally clean cut handsome white guy. Aaaand?

I really have no idea what point you guys are making!

In representing the archetype. I'm not sure how much clearer I can make this.

Well, Cullen is definitely older in DA:I than Alistair was in DA:O, but he looked about the same age in DA2. At least, to me.

But I'm not really trying to make any larger point? Just that the type doesn't overly appeal to me and that's why those ended up lower on my list. I mean, you quoted what the "knightly type" is, that's literally all I mean. I'm not saying there's something objectively wrong with it or that it should be changed, just that it's not my personal type.

Yeah Cullen's definitely too young and pretty for me in DA2.

Oh, okay :) It seemed like implications were being made that a certain group of people gravitated towards white knight types while a certain (clearly more enlightened) group gravitated towards men of color. I really didn't like that implication... also I would throw in that Jacob from ME is a knight type (a soldier), and wow, he's definitely the sexiest BW guy for me.

Yeah I guess I like the "honorable knight/soldier" guy with the more masculine features and a few years under his belt :P

My apologies, I didn't mean to imply this in the slightest. In fact, I wish there were more of this type available to non-straight gamers.

It's cool that there was a ME character of color who fit the archetype (though from what I've read about him, his whole romance was very much screwed by the writers, what with the cheating and everything), and I wish "conventionally attractive white guy" wasn't the standard, but that's not your fault, as a consumer.
