Heh, well my first impulse is to reject the hypothetical, since any game for which I'd really want to play the DLC I'd also really want to play the game, and so would be buying it as soon as it came out.

But assuming I was in a car accident and comatose for 4 years and woke up? Well, I'd be annoyed at paying $10 for Inquisition and $50 for it's DLC, sure. But an "issue" to me sounds like there's something at stake beyond my personal self interest, as if there's something ethically wrong about keeping DLC at base prices (hence why I objected to the anti-consumer label when I thought you were talking about DLC pricing in general). But if "issue" just means grudgingly paying $50 for 10-15 hours of content whereas the main game is $10-15 dollars for 50 hours of content, then I totally understand. But I'm never going to call a company or its members "greedy idiots" for something which is ultimately my choice.

Terrific answer. I'm happy to leave things there.

The only real issue I ever had with BioWare points before Origin is that you could only buy set blocks of points and it didn't always match up with the prices of DLC so it would actually be paying more for DLC then listed.  Now with Origin it seems to be a redundant step so I hope its going to be changed to a cash shop.

Just to reaffirm my point of how inconvenient and overpriced BioWare Points are for PC users. You could pick up the entire Mass Effect Trilogy edition from Gamestop right now for only 10$. On the other hand, buying all the DLC would cost you over 100$   . As well, we'd probably have leftover BioWare Points because of the fact we can only buy them in blocks.

I said this before, but I'll say it again: it's fine to be against any sort of DLC sale, as a few people from BioWare have explained. It's a totally reasonable explanation that the DLC regains it's value once you've got the games being played again. What isn't right and fair is PC players who never get any sort of sale or promotion on DLCs vs console players who get all the time. It's almost sad to see such a massive price difference just for PC players, since console players have had every BioWare DLC on sale 50% off for at least 1-2 times each. Just make this right is all I ask. Please Bioware  ;)

Again, what do Bio points have to do with DLC sales? Bio can put the points on sale any time they feel like it. Getting rid of the points wouldn't change their feelings about sales.

Leftover points are a real issue, but sales aren't.

I think it changes their mentality a bit if they change from BioWare Points to a normal cash system. If they put BioWare Points on sale, in reality, they are putting DAO, DA2, ME2, ME3 DLC on sale. That's a big proposition from an economic perspective, which is why I suspect they haven't been put on sale. It's something I've seen often with these kinds of points systems (when were Microsoft Points or any other virtual currency put on sale? I don't remember). On the other hand, if BioWare were to get rid of the points and use a money system, they could decide what goes on sale and that reassures them from an economic perspective. It would also put us on even terms with consoles. They could put a DLC up for sale on occasion and not make a big deal about it, meaning the people who do get it on sale can tell their buddies and make them pay after the sale is over. On the other hand, with the point system it would be a very big thing if BioWare put them on sale, since they never do, and their profit margin would be slimmer. The point is to make people pay full price, and you can't do that when everyone is buying them on a discount.

Please correct me if I am wrong. This is what I think. I am no economist, but I am a bit disappointed at how BioWare Points have been neglected over the years.

OK. I can see that as a reason for not having a general Bio points sale, but what's preventing them from simply changing the number of Bio points an individual DLC costs?

You make a good point. They could simply do that. However, I think the main issue is that the Bioware Points have simply been neglected and forgotten. As I said, there has been no sale or promotion for them in over 4 years, and despite multiple threads and requests on the old forums, they were never adressed. They are a relic from a different time. If they were to change from points to regular money, that would force them to relook and revamp their entire system, force them to look at the prices, and then maybe we get something better and more useful than the Bioware Points we currently have. They probably wouldn't do this if they stick with Bioware Points down the road, but thanks to some Bioware respnses in this thread, we know that the issue has been examined and will be talked about in the future  :)

I admit I hate the bioware points thing because if I only want a specific DLC I may have to pay for extra points and have leftovers I don't want. I just want to be able to directly buy the dlc I want.

Double standards as in console DLC going on sale while PC doesn't? They could do a better job of that. But then I always buy DLC when it comes out, so I don't really care about console sales, either.

Anti-consumerism? Hardly. This is just people bitter about not getting stuff for cheaper. And calling it greedy when a company doesn't reduce DLC prices is a double standard in itself, since one's primary motivation is simply to keep more money in their pocket.

IMO the idea that the value of story based add on content is constant when the value of the primary product is diminished is false. The value of the primary game diminishes over time (monetary and intrinsically) for various reasons. Regardless of how you may feel, all consumable products, the value of an add-on is directly dependent on the perceived value of the primary product.

The "bitterness" is the result of a disconnect between the consumer's perceived value of the main product and add-on with the actual price of the add-on.

Perceived value != Monetary Value.

Specifically when it comes to ME DLC, they are overpriced. The great games they are, they are old news and a fast paced market. For me, new games = new experiences = more value. I've played most of the DLC from the ME franchise, and I'd like to play them all, but for the money they are asking it is not worth it. Last time I got nostalgic, I added up how much it would cost to round out my DLC, and bought Tomb Raider instead.

Get rid of it, it's anti consumer.

The worst part for me aswell are the leftovers. I still have 80 BP left and can't buy anything with it. And when I want to buy a 400 BP DLC, I have to buy extra 400 BP and still have those 80 left..

I had the same problem, I would up buying a 80 point back in Mass Effect 3 multiplayer just to "use it up" so I didn't feel like I had my money just sitting there unused.

We will be using cash for PC DLC for Dragon Age: Inquisition. You can read the announcement here:

Please continue any BioWare Points discussion with regards to Dragon Age: Inquisition PC in this thread, thanks.

Can we cash BioWare Points into cash when buying DAI DLC somehow? Left-over points that just lay there forever are kinda... lame. I know Microsoft converted Microsoft Points into pure cash when XBL went cash.

Well this is nice. I can always use more liquidity.

Hopefully this isn't the "big announcement" though. :P

As this is the first Dragon Age game I will be playing on PC (well, laptop), and since I was comfortable using cash on my PS3 through the PSN, which I vastly preferred to using points on XBOX live with my XBOX 360, it is good to know that PC DLC can be bought with cash.

We cannot do any type of points to cash conversion, unfortunately. We do have some plans to deal with this situation in the near future, but it is still in the planning stages right now.

Please keep us updated =) Would love to get me some DLC, even though I'm sure my current BWP amount wouldn't pay for quite an entire pack.

I've got a some points that aren't ever going to get used, so any solution you guys can come up with would be both anticipated and appreciated. I look forward to hearing more.

Yaaaaaaay, human money used by humans!

I, too, have some BioWare points left over, so I'm curious to see what you come up with. (It's a tiny and odd amount, though - something like 120 points, which is why I could never spend them.)

Same. I accidentally bought too many points a few years back and thought I'd save the extra ones for Inquisition DLC. It's not a big deal since I don't have that many points (1520 to be precise), but it'd still be a bit sad to lose something I've already paid for. I guess I can always buy the Omega DLC for ME3...

Wow, I sound terribly whiny. Sorry.

Agreed. While I think it is a good idea to use "human" money instead of BW points, I still have points left and I had hoped I could use them on Inquisition. Any updates are appreciated.
