It didn't, but without her help you're on pretty shaky ground indeed trying to recruit Sten.  Nor is she offensive in any way.  She's actually fairly pleasant and accepting of others as long as they don't actually call her a nutcase to her face.  I simply resent the fact that her recruitment facilitates Sten's.  She's able to disable that infernal trap in the dead trenches that only matters when you're backtracking but the warden can't.  Even though I have yet to kill her on any playthrough, it wouldn't matter if I did because she's coming back anyway.

Simply put, the only reason I dislike the character is because I feel like I've been lied to.  Since I've never killed her, I really don't care if she lives.  I just don't want it to be an override.

Uhm....... You can recruit Sten without having ever talked to Lelianna.... And ANY rogue can disable that trap, not jsut Lelianna. Also, you can recruit Sten without ever talking to the Revered Mother too....

Yup. I went through 2 full playthroughs before I even knew Leliana existed, and did just fine.

Well, you could just use the Keep to delete her heroic deeds from history by never having met the Warden...  that way it doesn't matter how difficult it is to recruit Sten without her.  Just check the "recruited Sten" box and you're good to go.  Even better, she's not really a legendary hero who faced the Archdemon and helped end the Blight... she's just a highly skilled assassin who works for the Chantry.

Magdalena was likely addressing her previous playthroughs of Origins, where her Warden needed Leliana for these tasks for one reason or another.

I've heard this before but I can never imagine myself simply walking past a tavern in an rpg.  Or any building, really.  There might be coin hidden in unlikely places, you know?

:D  All my characters are technically rogues, but some were born with low agility and had to settle for wielding broadswords.  :bandit:

That's rather subjective. There could be in-character reasons why a specific protagonist may distrust advice coming from one of the advisers, given that not every racial background is likely to be inclined to trust people who were part of the Chantry.

This.

I already have at least 2 characters that don't trust the chantry worth a damn.

So the dislike of Lelianna stems from how she CHOSE to play the game? That is..... That is just sad...

Yeah, I do know that you can recruit Sten and not Lel.  It's just easier if you recruit her, which is unique to the situation, since with no other character in the dragon age games is recruitment of one companion a condition for another.  I am truly intrigued by the thought that my PC might someday disable that trap.  Do you know the cunning requirement?  I just usually ignore it and make sure not to backtrack.

You need 20 cunning (or the rogue talent mechanical expertise) to open the cage as a rogue.

You are absolutely right.  It is sad that I felt the need to validate myself in this fashion and I'd be ashamed if I had any pride, which I don't.  Moving on from personal commentary, I would like to be given a choice and be allowed to live with it's consequences.  If I know what they might be or can guess, or even if I don't care, should I be denied that choice because of someone else's vanity?

Thank you for answering my trap question, L.....  I'm pretty sure I've never brought a rogue to the deep roads with a cunning of less than 25 and 3 ranks in locks, 3 in traps? (not sure about that tbh, since I usually find setting traps mid-combat to be less-than-fun, I don't spend a lot of points in it.)  I'll check it out next time I pass through.

OK.  I'm trolling because I think that she's special in a way I can never hope to be and I hate her because of it.

Special? Nah, the world is full of self-righteous hypocrites like her. I'd be happy that I am not one, but hey, just my opinion, if that's what you want to be, all power to you.

On topic: It's really pains me that we can't dismiss advisers. I'd rather have no adviser rather than an adviser that is going to spew bs every time they open their mouth and make moronic suggestions.

I don't think advisers will go away only, or at least not in the ways you describe, because there is nobody to replace them unlike companions.

I think it would be an insanely cool twist if somehow there was a crisis point for Leliana, and if you lose her she gets supplanted by Morrigan. Because they never liked eachother, and Morrigan is just as cunning as Leliana.

Also, Morrigan is literally the best spy ever: Shapeshift into a tiny bird or squirrel and observe anything undetected.

If that's not the case... Well, it looked like Leliana might die (If we make the wrong choices) in that Demo footage anyways. So, replacement or not who knows.

I would adore Morrigan as the new Leliana.  I think she'd be awesome, what with the whole Flemeth and mystery and OGB and witch hunt and whatever else, I can't get enough.  I really can't wait to see what they're going to spring on us for her.  Yeah, I know about the internal inconsistency of my argument.  I only object to the very existence of characters who have made me feel meh about the warden.  Morrigan hasn't yet.  Unless she's changed a whole bunch, I don't see her trying to get me to sign on to any personal fantasies.

There's nothing sad about wanting to play the game in a way that entertains you, especially when you immerse yourself in the world and have an idea for the kind of protagonist you want to play as.

I meant for Sten's cage in Lothering. If you're curious, the deft hands tree adds ten points to your cunning score; with a score of 70, you should be able to lockpick anything in the game, excluding any points in the deft hands skill tree (meaning you can open all the locked chests and doors in the game with a cunning score of 30, and all four ranks of the deft hands skill tree).

I think maybe a police captain would be a more fair comparison, unless you're familiar with a Walmart that arms its employees with state of the art weaponry?  I mean, it's true that Cullen isn't a general or anything, be we aren't fighting a war... if anything this is a series of small-scale conflicts involving multiple factions (from what I've seen).  The Inquisition seems more like peacekeepers than an actual military force...

I think the reason Cullen is our military leader is due to his experience fighting abominations, of which there shall be quite a few I assume. Otherwise he'd definitely be replaced by a more qualified leader.

There's no reason to think Cullen isn't qualified because we haven't heard about the way he led templars in Kirkwall.  He probably knows quite a bit about abominations, true, but not every inquisitor is going to find that a good thing.  I'd rather leave him home when it comes to stuff he's probably seen more than enough of already.  There will be lots of other chances to use his expertise, I'm sure.  I doubt he's all that unbiased when it comes to mages and qunari in any case.

I didn't realize till like my 4th playthrough she could help you recruit sten, since I play rogues and I would just unlock his gate myself. Heck I accidentally did it the first time when trying to click on him I clicked the cage instead and had no idea there was a whole big thing you were supposed to do.
