After Cory and the Architect, we've come to realize that Darkspawn are much more than just a tainted race of creatures, living in the Deep Roads.  They are also intellegent.  And some of them are even ancient Tevinter Magisters themselves, who've actually brought the Blights upon the world by walking in the Golden City, turning it black.

When I learned who Cory really was, my jaw dropped a bit.  This guy actually physically was within the Golden City?  He was cast down, and came back looking as he did?  It seemed to lend credence to the chantry lore that the Maker sent the magisters back to Thedas, cursed and twisted and tainted.

With this knowledge, I began to ponder, and came up with a theory about Darkspawn.  We all know they have ways to repopulate via Broodmothers, thus producing and reproducing the bulk of the Darkspawn armies.  But these are just tools; Pawns if you will.  I believe the REAL Darkspawn are indeed creatures like Cory and the Architect, the ancient magisters themselves who were cast from the Golden City.  They seek the Old Gods not to spread the taint, but because the Old Gods were who ancient Tevinter worshiped, as evident by Corys non-stop rambling to Dumat.

These tainted magisters direct the Darkspawn from deep in the Deep Roads, where nobody other than Darkspawn go.  They can lead and direct the Darkspawn on the surface telepathically through "the song" just like the Mother did, the Architect did, and even Cory.  I even think that these ancient Tevinter Darkspawn could be enthralling the Old God dragons themselves, and using them as a powerful weapon and vanguard to lead the troops on the surface to reconquer Thedas in the name of the Old Gods.

Any thoughts on this?  I think its pretty plausible.  I know the Darkspawn and Blights are somewhat old news, but they play a crucial part in DA lore.

I don't think the taint/blight is some part of the Magisters' master plan. I think they were completely tricked like the tools they were and their sacrilege damned them and the old gods to the hell that is the blight (even their souls are tied to it). Unfortunately, their wrong doing unleashed the blight on Thedas as well.

I find it odd that Cory seemed to produce a kind of song, or at least mental manipulation, but the Architect said that the darkspawn just fear him. Maybe the Architect was lying or perhaps Cory and Archie don't know that they produce a kind of "song."

I think the ancient magisters are dead or trapped. I think Cory was an example of an imprisoned ancient magister and Archie an example of a killed darkspawn magister who reincarnated through the blight.

Won't know more until more is revealed by the Wardens or the darkspawn.

I don't remember if it was a "song" but Cory WAS using some kind of mind influence. Remember the ancient grey warden guy? He kept running off when he heard Cory calling him/others to temporarily escape Cory's influence. Kind of interesting since the Old Gods do a calling thing too with the darkspawn. I don't think Cory was aware of it (and Archie as well) because he was confused when waking up and didn't mention anything about controlling others to help him escape. My guess is that it was a subconscious thing.
