I always wondered... Why does DA2 run so much better than DA:O on PC?

I can play DA2 at much higher settings and full screen with no issues but for some reason I cannot even play DA:O on full screen, need settings to low and my laptop overheats like crazy. While DA2 doesn't even come close to overheating my laptop with setting on Medium or High and AA.

Is it due to taking away the ability to zoom out into overhead mode that makes DA2 run so much more smoothly than DA:O?

I don't know the reason why, but it's not just PC.  I've been playing characters back-to-back on PS3, and it's just astonishing how many unpatched glitches there are on DAO that aren't on DA2.

(Awakening is the worst offender.  Dozens of things have to be done in a precise order, or half the content is locked out by bugs.)

Almost never had those kinds of problems on DA2.  DA2 runs more smoothly on PS3, loads more quickly, and hardly ever crashes or glitches.

Is Dragon Age 2 less hardware intensive?

Could this be the reason?

My guess is that DA2 runs on more recent, better optimized engine build. Similarly how Mass Effect 2 runs a lot more smoothly than ME1 (at least for me it does) *shrugs*
