My own mother, many, many, many times when asked, "Why did you have children?" to wit her answer was and always shall be, "Slave labor."

Mostly in jest (though I did have a crap load of chores as a kid), she's also the same woman who bought me a George Foreman grill and exclaimed, "There! Now you won't ever need to get married!"

Oh the lulz of my mother.

Your mother sounds a lot like mine, she says the same things.... though mine is heavy on the sarcasm and says she does it out of love.

This is the same person that calls me her old age investment.

My parents have referred to my sister and I as "slaves" for as long as I can remember. Thinking about it, it seems a bit ironic coming from a black dad.

That'd be really cool, reminds me of the weird bit in Origins where our Dog 'finds' us some random Denerim kid, Then there was also that one orphan in Lothering we couldn't adopt. wonder if the Blight + Fade demons haven't already swallowed them whole by Inquisition...

I wanted to adopt the little red haired kid in Lothering and the kid the Dog "give" to you in Denerim in DAO. I would adopt the little one immediately.

bonus if the kid is initially jelous of the LI  :P

Maker no. Remember the kid near the start of origins? Kid: 'ave you seen my muvver?
My warden certainly wouldn't have adopted him. She'd have sooner adopted the creepy kid from haven.

But no. My characters can't be trusted with kids. My last warden was terrible, she kept selling kids souls to demons (okay I'm exaggerating it was only two kids, so not too bad).

I'm probably a softy on this one, but hear me out.

How would you respond to a side-quest where a kid loses their parents and the Inquisitor has the option to "adopt" them? (And you can decline either coldly or put them into reliable hands) Then their relationship would depend completely on you along with all of it's negative and positive consequences. Then things get dangerous towards the late-game and you find a trustworthy caretaker to take them out of harm's way.

For the record, the kid wouldn't actually go with you on missions (cause why would you bring a child into a warzone?), but would stay at the keep. The kid could also potentially die.

You want an option for a child to die?

no thanks, I've got my "bloodbath posing as realism" covered with Game of Thrones

Only if they give the kid the same model as the Catalyst.  So I can either kill the kid or sell it for gold and not feel bad about it.

This was unexpected. :) I suppose it would depend on the personality of my protagonist at the time. There are different issues that can arise, especially when your character is focused on closing the Breach. Do you have enough time to be a parent? Is there an issue of clashing cultures, or is the child of the same race and background as the protagonist?

With my first Inquisitor, I wouldn't mind adopting a child. The Dalish adopted Aveline, so I guess it wouldn't be implausible to do the same. I've done it in other games, to varying extents; my Telvanni and Redoran did in Skyrim, and Joel pretty much adopted Ellie in The Last of Us. This seems a bit more complicated than those circumstances, of course.

Hmm... I am not sure. Bioware could do it well, but it seems like a big subplot for it to be optional and then, there will be people who wouldn't want to play step-parent.

It's a good idea for a fic, though.

No thanks. This will turn like one of those lame anime where you have this annoying brat tagging along and trying to be all cute while dragging along his teddy bear.

Isn't there a trope for this kind of thing?

I wouldn't be against the idea, but any game that involves children is walking on faberge egg-shells.

We'll already have to babysit our team.

I thought it was a neat little addition in Skyrim, but only because I never actually had to "take care" of the kids. I could just leave them with my husband and/or Housecarl and could trot around the wilderness without even thinking of them. I could pop home, give them a gift and all is forgotten.

I don't think it would work for Dragon Age, though. Dragon Age does a lot more focus on building relationships with those around you and I wouldn't want to deal with a kid on that level.

I love The Walking Dead and The Last of Us, but I dunno--Dragon Age is a bit more roleplayish--if that makes sense. I don't want some helpless kid to be bugging me every time I have to return to base or when I am trying to save the world or, you know--get busy.

I'd be totally cool with this as long as he's not a total brat. I deal with my sister enough IRL; I don't also need her in my fantasy RPG. <_<

Just think, though; he can brag to his friends about how awesome my QunQuizzy mage is. "Oh, yeah? Well, my dad is seven feet tall and can shoot fire from his hands!"

Hmmm, my protagonist doesn't need a kid, but she might need a squire. You know, someone to make sure her weapons and armor are cared for, polished, sharped, etc., and her mounts curried and fed. In return the kid could expect to receive training. It's the traditional medieval contract. I could call him Boxey or something.

This reminds me of Adventure time Episode between the Ice King and Marceline

Just so long as it's not like in Skyrim, where you have to choose which poor urchins you adopt, and you can only pick two. Even though you have eight houses and more gemstones than you could ever sell. Then you end up walking fast every time you go to Windhelm so you don't hear the sad little freezing flower girl you didn't know about until after you already adopted two kids. And all those kids want are sweet rolls and skeevers for pets. Ungrateful little milk drinkers.

this all just reminds me of Iona ( from DA:O, Human Noble origin ) and her daughter in the Denerim alienage, i hated how we couldn't do anything about her...we couldn't even inform her that her mom was dead  :crying:

"Hmm, By an accident of fate, I am the one person in the world who is guaranteed to HAVE to put myself in life and death situations on a regular basis.  Every single time I go out to close a tear, I could be demon chow.

I know!  I will do the super responsible thing and take on a orphan or two.  Because what orphans need is an absentee parent who could die at any time, leaving them orphans again.  I shall go down to Orphans R Us and pick up a pod of urchins immediately!"

Yeah, no.
