That is its legacy, and that is why its on these types of lists. People will harp on about its faults, but in the end that game absolutely should be played so folks can understand what inspired this running theme in games today.

Seriously, it is a cool game I admit. And I really enjoy it and like it. And think it is one of the best games. But when I think deep about it, the only good things about it is its massive world.  I love it and it is in my top games. but not the first one.

No Persona 3,4, Nocturne, NV, devil survior 1+2, DDS, Dues Ex:HR and junk like Skyrim, FF13, FO3, Diablo 3 and ME2 are on the list? Give me a break.

Welp, the fact that Diablo 3 even get a mention is rather disturbing.

Yeah. I had that Deus Ex in mind too. Man that game was cool. And I really REALLY could see what my actions and decisions would cost and what their consequences are. I here they are working on a game called Deus Ex Universe.

No Persona 3,4, Nocturne, devil survior 1+2, DDS,

That's a bit unfair considering how niche those titles are. Maybe P4G could have made it, but don't be surprised games like Nocturne, Devil Survivor or Digital Devil Saga aren't on the list.

It says best RPG, not best popular RPG.  These list are crap because it's always the same thing. The popular titles getting attention not the niche games or the games that do this stuff better then these popular games(I'm looking right at Skyrim and ME2)

Not to mention having Diablo 3 and FF13 on the list....

A sandbox RPG is still a role-playing game. Besides, "RPG" is a catch all term for a wide variety of games that allow for choices like those.

Skyrim absolutely had to exist for it. It was its massive popularity that caught the attention of developers and publishers everywhere. GTA V, while also a massive hit, did not spark the wave of "open world" ideologies that folks have had for a couple years now.

And we absolutely do hear about Oblivion to this day. Morrowind more so obviously, but Oblivion does get mentioned. We'll see in the future regardless.

Maybe so, maybe so but this hasn't helped RPG development at all. Most RPG fans are excited over the likes of Torment, Eternity, Original Sin and Wasteland 2 hence why they exceeded their Kickstarter's with Eternity reaching near 4 million in in funding. Skyrim sold well due to its advertising and is a mainstream game made in mind for people who want quick gaming experiences and who can't live with consequences in their RPG's (hence the hoards of "essential characters" in Skyrim and the fact that the game is actually linear in terms of quests and story).

I don't see Oblivion mentioned at all nowadays. Skyrim has replaced it and when the next TES games come out, it will replace Skyrim. This is in contrast to the Souls, Witcher or Dragon Age series where people still talk about the first installments.

Skyrim is big for developers and publishers but not the genre. More games were inspired by Dark Souls than by Skyrim (i.e Lords of the Fallen, Dragon's Dogma, Shadows of Mordor which has a similar death system, ZombiU and even the PS4's design was inspired by DkS). Skyrim was more popular and sold more but it certainly wasn't that beneficial to the genre or to gaming itself. Slimgrin said it best though:

Well, most devs covet Skyrim's success which is why they like to quote it. The few devs who really speak their minds, like Warhorse and CDPR, aren't so rosy about it. I'd argue Fallout 3 and Oblivion were the first to popularize an open world approach. Skyrim was just riding the wave of Bethesda's early efforts.

I think ME2 did a decent and great job actually in combining the elements of an action third person shooter and an RPG and choices did really have consquences. But the choices from ME did not seem to have much of a significant effect on the game. It clearly did a great job in comparison to ME3.

Maybe GameInformer has never played or heard of them, I don't know.

I do agree that these lists are usually the same and I definitely don't agee with the list at all.

Any such list is inherently flawed, but at the very least it should include games that push the genre forward. This includes indies. Unfortunately, most game 'journalists' only consider popular titles. Could be that they don't play enough games, or they know readers are familiar with crap like Diablo 3.

As great as they are that's the ps2. The list is about the ps3/360/wii era.

Every list like this one is flawed in that none will ever be factual. Its all a matter of opinion so folks who disagree with it will decide otherwise. Perspective changes these lists dramatically.

Devil survior 1+2 was DS and 3DS, Persona 3 was PSP and P4G is vita ;)

You got me at Nocturne and DDS though.

I think pretty much thats the case. And perhaps they want to attract more viewers and fans and costumers for the site and stuff.

Persona 3 and 4G were re-releases I'm not sure if they should count as much as I love them.

Pretty much. The list is actually made and written by gameinformer owner/chairman or whatever he is called and it heavily influenced by his taste and personal likings and with the aim of attracting more attention and viewers and costumers.

Thats why I avoid the comment sections on things like these, as the article is basically saying, "This is what I think, now disagree with me and argue with others" and you have a summed up version of the responses.

Since Game Informer bases that list on personal opinion and not based on critical reception, sales, following, or any other aspects, I wouldn't put much interest on the article.

Pfffft, if they are gonna count JRPGs then there should have been an inclusion of Xenoblade & Vesperia at the very least.

What can I say? I am a sucker for these kind of things.

But it is actually good because people exchange idea and it is really shown how this kind of rankings are flawed and weak. Unfortunately, when this list was published on a local website in my country, they all clapped. While most of them dont know what FPS and TPS is.

Exactly.
