Recently GameInformer released a ranking of top ten RPG games for the previous gen consoles. And for the sake of variety in the list and ranking, only one game of each franchise is mentioned. In the ranking combinations of genres with RPG ilike action RPG or RTS RPG are taken into account. here is the list.
10- Final Fantasy XIII
9 - Valkyria Chronicles
8 - Dragon Age: Origins
7 - Xenoblade Chronicles
6 - Diablo III
5 - The Witcher 2
4 - Dark Souls II
3 - Fallout 3
2 - Mass Effect 2
1 - The Elder Scrolls V : Skyrim
What do you think?
I'm pretty excited Valkyria Chronicles and Xenoblade Chronicles are even in there, I'd go...
1. Valkyria Chronicles
2. Xenoblade Chronicles
3. The Witcher 2
4. Mass Effect 2
5. DA: Origins
at a minimum. Then, I didn't like Fallout 3, Skyrim, or D3 as much as this list so I probably would not have put them in there in the first place. Also for me ME1 > ME2 so I would swap those for that franchise. Then I haven't played DSII or FF13 so not sure what to do with those. .
First, I wouldn't put them in any particular order.
Second, I've played five of those titles, one of which only briefly before putting it down as something I wouldn't enjoy. That title was FFXIII.
Of the ones I've played and enjoyed, yes to Skyrim, yes to Origins, yes to TW2, and as far as Mass 2 goes, I'd instead say the first Mass Effect, as it could lead folks to the rest of the franchise and was absolutely a fantastic game. Mass 2 was good and was intrinsically a better made game than its predecessor, but it led the franchise in a direction it didn't need to go in which paid off bad in Mass 3.
The problem with the ME trilogy was that it wasn't written as a trilogy at all rather all the games were written as stand alone titles hence why there were issue's with the story. Though all the games in the trilogy are good there aren't without their flaws ME1 had bad gameplay ME2 lacked any story progression and ME3 was linear.
Skyrim was barely an rpg, it was so dumbed down that a 3 year old could pick up and beat it on the highest difficulty. Quests were also generic, I'd even take oblivion over it any day.
My point being, Skyrim was historic for gaming. Might be hard to believe given its not even three years old yet, but in the long run, it will be remembered fondly by the gaming community. Actually the majority already does think of it fondly.
My favourite game ever.
On the list:
DAO should be higher
ME2 shouldn't be there
Fallout New Vegas should be second
That's funny, because I don't recall a lot of people liking Final Fantasy XIII yet there it is. I actually liked it though.
Well apparently GI is "one of the few" who liked it enough to constitute a slot on the list. So yeah.
So they took about 10 of the most well known rpgs of last gen and put them in a list then? Kinda suprised about Xenoblade and Valkyria Chronicles, but Xenoblade's been getting a good bit of press recently.
No Persona 3,4, Nocturne, NV, devil survior 1+2, DDS, Dues Ex:HR and junk like Skyrim, FF13, FO3, Diablo 3 and ME2 are on the list? Give me a break.
Persona 3 and 4 are technically (regardless of ports and remakes) two gens back, not one.
For a second, I thought FFXIII was #1. Ahhhhh.
This is how I would reorder it, in personal preference. Unranked are those I haven't played (or at least not extensively, as is the case with Witcher 2 and Fallout 3), as again, this is personal pref and I shouldn't outright judge yet.
Unranked: Dark Souls II, The Witcher 2 (owned, planning to play), Fallout 3 (owned, planning to play), Diablo III (planning to play, boyfriend might buy), Xenoblade Chronicles (boyfriend might buy), Valkyria Chronicles
4- Final Fantasy XIII
3- The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
2- Dragon Age: Origins
1- Mass Effect 2
So yeah, I'm basically not feeling the Skyrim love. Oh well!
And I agree with others. This is missing many great titles. From those I've played:
-Mass Effect 1 and 3
-Deus Ex: Human Revolution
But guys... this is just them limiting themselves to the PREVIOUS generation (360, PS3, PC games of that period) and a single title of each franchise. Otherwise you might see something nuts like all 3 (or at least 2 of the) Mass games up there (JUST BEING HYPOTHETICAL), taking up room that another game could have for the sake of variety.
I don't mind this list. It isn't perfect, it probably isn't great, but it is good.
I wouldn't even consider Diablo 3 an RPG...
I wouldn't even consider Diablo 3 an RPG...
Hey if Diablo 3 is on the list, might as well put Skyward Sword on the list. It's as much a RPG as Diablo 3.
HA, GAYYYYY. Skyrim is 1st? xD
Skyrim was barely an rpg, it was so dumbed down that a 3 year old could pick up and beat it on the highest difficulty. Quests were also generic, I'd even take oblivion over it any day.
Agreed there, Oblivion beats Skyrim.
But given that criterion Mass Effect 2 and 3 are even more 'dumbed down'.
List like that are just a popularity contest. Why are you guy so concerned about their stupid list and .,... I don't feel like bashing other RPG because they rank higher than my favorite RPG and trying to rationalize why my opinion is superior than your opinion... With blablabla ''here is why this game is superior'' and wahwawah.
Than some people take this crap wayy tooo personal and it always end up with bitching and bickering and bitterness over a software. Geez. So obnoxious.
Funny thing so far I have always thought that everybody loves skyrim and considers it one of the greatest RPGs. But hey, I was wrong. At first I was like "no game can beat this.", but when I spaid mmore attention, I realized and saw the flaws of the game. from its hilarious bugs and glitches that never end to the fact choices have no real consequence really. And in some cases quests are linear. For example you see no change in people`s behavior or Windhelm when you side with the rrebels or the Imperials. but is some cases still they have done a good job. Also when a game has health bar and considers body parts important, how on earth someone that you shoot an arrow to their neck or head survives it?
If we consider ME2 linear, then I should say that the other 2 titles have the same flaw, so does a couple of other games, LIKE DAO. You HAVE to kill the archdemon, you have to cause it ends the blight. You cant walk away. It is the same with ME, you HAVE to destroy or incapacitate the collectors`s base, otherwise ME3 could not be made and humanity will be lost and the whole point of the game will be lost.
I can say one of the few games that I have played and it was non linear was Deus Ex HR.
I have not played most of the games on the list, but based on what I've been reading, seeing and watching (on YouTube) during the past few years, I think the list is about right -- based on BOTH popularity and metascores. Everyone seemed to love Skyrim, more so than Oblivion. Skyrim is certainly the most popular RPG on YouTube I've seen in recent years, and people were obsessed with it. Mass Effect 2 have the best metascore and was the most highly acclaimed of the series, even though a very vocal minority like to yell and shout over everyone about how Mass Effect 1 is better than 2.
I remember how a lot of people hated New Vegas because the game did not even work. New Vegas was incredibly buggy when it was released (even compared to Bethesda's usual standard.) I remember watching YouTube videos of New Vegas crashing during introduction and credits. I remembered watching a YouTube video with some guy destroyed his box of New Vegas, and then poured gasoline over the ruined game and disc and set fire to it -- that's how pissed he was at the buggy condition of the game. That's how ridiculously buggy it was. I think New Vegas may be the buggiest RPG of the last generation. Over the years New Vegas may have been patched and fixed to a working condition. However, people have already moved on, and they were left with a bad taste in their mouths. People paid for a product that did not work. That was pretty serious. YOU may have tolerated New Vegas' horrid quality and instability and forgiven its bugs, but its poor quality has to be considered. For that reason alone, New Vegas does not belong on the list.
So. If we disregard those vocal minorities and go with what the majority of the gamers, (based on what I've seen,) then yeah, the list is about right. I think people here are just butthurt because their personal favorites are not number one on the list, and all the Japanophiles would not be happy unless the entire list is filled with JRPG.

They're all dogshit.
Only RPG list I've seen that's worth anything is the codex's.

ell said. Could not put it any better myself.
Even with that huge mod Morrowind's gameplay, graphic and dialogue options are so stupid that I prefer Oblivion Alpha to it!
Well, at least in Dat mod they tried to make the faces of a few characters "beautiful" but they're still unclear!
More on New Vegas: I remembered watching a YouTube video with some guy destroyed his box of Fallout: New Vegas. He was not satisfied so he proceeded to pour gasoline over the ruined game and discs, and then he set fire to the game. That's how pissed he was at the buggy condition of the game. New Vegas may be playable now after many years of patching. But we have to take into consideration of the many customers who bought the product in a non-working condition. So New Vegas does not belong on the list.
Huh ??

That`s what I felt like doing when I saw and then bought Devil May Cry DmC.
Too many JRPG's on that list. Oblivion, Fallout New Vegas, Mass Effect and South Park the Stick of Truth are games that I think should of be up there instead.
Any objective reasoning for that, or is it dogshit cause dogshit? They're all dogshit.
I get the mindset(and many journalists do as well) as it does have a major effect on the industry, but I personally don't agree with that. We're looking for the best RPGs, not the most successful RPGs. For this, I'd rather ignore the commercial side of things and look at how a game changed things solely from a critical point-of-view.Skyrim absolutely deserves to be on a list like this(regardless of its placement) because it transcended what people thought the limit was for an RPG's market, selling like hot cakes.
Yep.This list is dumb, Fallout New Vegas should be #1 but it's not even on the list.
Nope.
Mass Effect 2 is the best RPG ever made (even tho I don't consider it a true RPG, more like a hybrid of TPS and RPG)
Mass Effect 2 is THE best game of Last gen. And probably top 5 or 3 single player games ever made, along side Half Life 2, Resident Evil 4 and maybe Bioshock.
