Do they really need one they have been surpressed for many centuries lost the dales if they got it back what would they do with it just gonna lose it again I may sound cruel but it's the truth city elves and dalish elves don't get along thoughts ?
With an elven Inquisitor, I'd like to give the elves a homeland. If there's an elven rebellion in the Dales aiming to overthrow the Orlesian occupation, I would fully support the elves in emancipating the region so that the elves had their own kingdom again - a place where the elves wouldn't be limited to roles of servitude, where they would not be killed en mass in purges, where the followers of the Creators could practice their faith freely. It's a goal that I would love to pursue with a Dalish protagonist.

I'd say they do. They're a people with their own culture, race, tribal distinction, language, past, religion, etc. That, and they only lost their homeland because crusading zealots forced them out of it and shoved them into ghettos.
Nothing wrong with letting them reclaim some of what they've lost.
Now, I do recognize that a lot of the Dalish appear to be somewhat nomadic, but it would be nice for them, I think, to have a fixed, unified 'national' Elven territory.
Kind of like the whole question of Israel, really, in a lot of ways.
EDIT: To LobselVith8's point above, replace the word 'purge' with 'pogrom' and the analogue between City Elves and dispossessed Jews gets even stronger.

The Dalish do since they are nomads, the city elves however don't need a homeland since they already have a home.

The problem with having an elven homeland is first agreeing what we understand by an "elven homeland".
The options may vary a lot. From a country that would be almost the same as your usual Andrastian kingdom, but populated by elves instead of humans, to a rebirth of the Dales of old, with elves worshipping their old gods and isolating themselves from human influence. Or anything else in-between, of course. If this thread goes on, we'll likely see supporters of different definitions, all of them equally likely as long as nobody sarts using the No True Scotsman excuse.
In DA:I can become a very important issue because we are visiting the Dales, we know from TME that are parties interested in elven rebellion, and it also tells us that in Halamshiral elves are the vast majority of the population, so it's much more easier to have a movement for independence there than in any other part of Thedas. Everywhere else, elves are in the minority. If it happens or not, it's in Bioware's hands.
My guess? If independence is possible, it will probably be because it will be mandatory. A free, independent elven nation is too big of a change in Thedas to make the player choose it or not, given Bioware's track record with these things in past games. The question would be then "how?" and "what sadistic choice will Bioware ask us to do?".

They'd have had one a long time ago if only they'd stop being so stuck in a past they know nothing of. I'm ok with them keeping some aspects of their culture, but they're too hung up on their "past glory". They fell once and got enslaved. They fell a second time, some became wanderers who are being harassed, while others got stuck among humans. I doubt "third time's a charm". Otherwise I'm all for it.

Probably, but nearly all of Thedas is already settled, and I doubt that any existing nation is going to give up their land without a fight... Unless elven explorers get on ships and try to find a new continent, I honestly just don't see it happening.

Yes they need a homeland, it's the only way the Dalish culture can significantly thrive. A homeland would give them roots to grow and progress. Without a homeland I think that some of the clans tend to become stuck in the past and have no time to innovate or look forward because they are too busy traveling from place to place. I would hope that we get a chance to help the elven rebellion overthrow the establishment and give them a homeland, they deserve it.

Given its horrendous track record on Earth, I don't see why Thedas should be visited with it, too.

Ethnic-national self-determination is one of the most noxious and vile ideas in the history of the world, and has been responsible for millions of deaths over the last two centuries.

What? You don't think the Dalish will just send the humans living in the Dales a nicely worded letter asking them to vacate the premises?

I find the status quo that the elves have to endure under human rule to be fairly vile; murdering men, women, and children in purges if the elves are protesting their living conditions is simply one example as to why some of us are interested in seeing the Elvhen get a kingdom where they won't have to suffer these rampant abuses.

Do humans and dwarves need a homeland?
Why don't we take away theirs, leave them wandering vagrants or subservient second-class citizens in someone else's continent, and then see if having a homeland is really needed for a people.

The Elves of the Dales should be able to rule themselves. Though whether that's possible I don't know. And that still wouldn't necessarily give the Dalish exiles a home.

Well, I think a distinction needs to be drawn here between two things.
A "Homeland", and "Basic, reasonable living conditions befitting sentient beings".
To Eirene's point, hardcore ethno-nationalism is pretty horrible in practice (e.g. Turkey and Armenia, Serbia/Bosnia/Croatia, etc.).
On the other hand, the living conditions of "City Elves" are absolutely abhorrent. While I don't think forceful dispossession of the lands of other people is a necessary radical step in order to create an Elvish "Homeland", I do absolutely think that City Elves in particular have the right as sentient beings (to channel my inner Optimus Prime) to an existence that doesn't regularly subject them to rape, murder, theft, brutality, religious marginalization and basically every other indignation you could throw at someone.
That's pretty horrible, and needs to be reformed ASAP.

I don't think they necessarily need a homeland. Just give them equal standing with humans so they aren't impoverished forever.
If they did get a homeland, I'd prefer they have proper cities and towns like human nations, as opposed to the old tribal thing the Dalish currently have.

Getting an Elven Homeland in 3 steps.
Step 1: Climb down off cross.
Step 2: Use wood to build bridge.
Step 3: Use bridge to get over it.
