Just becaue you're the leader of the inquisition doesn't mean the rest will follow your every word. If it's composed mostly of humans, why would they agree for an elfcentric inquisitor?
I doubt they'd be ok with the Inquisitor helping some elves, who've already been ungrateful to them in the past.
"Oh, you're giving the Dales back to the elves? I'm totally ok with it. Here, let me retreat back to my hovel and squat in dirt while eating turnips all day."
The protagonist becomes the leader of the Inquisition, a military organization, and the main character can be Dalish, Dwarven, or Vashoth, so being non-human isn't going to prevent the Inquisitor from being in a leadership position.
The Inquisition has bigger concerns than some elves who can't hold a land for more than 5 minutes.
You may feel it doesn't matter, but there are those of us who don't share that sentiment. For some of us, an elven homeland is something we would like to pursue with our character.
People in the past were pretty creative when it came to avoiding making babies. As dumb as Hawke is, he did at least one smart thing and avoided getting Merrill pregnant. She can barely take care of herself, much less of a baby.
Merrill was a highly intelligent person who was able to handle magic proficiently for several years and lend aid to the protagonist when needed, and she had a rather dry sense of humor. I don't think it's accurate to say she would be incapable of handling the responsibilities of a baby simply because she is dealing with culture shock in a foreign society.
