that just proves the elves will be bred out of existence faster
that doesn't mean they should get their own homeland.
LOL. Yeah. Once again Thedas =/= Earth. By that logic the elves would have been extinct by the time humans first arrived on Thedas.

Is that you Edward Longshanks?
Yep this thread is going somewhere pleasant...

well not really.... like at all....
if there is continued inter-mingling of elven and human populations the outcome will be more humans, same with the other races.
None of that is at all related to whether elves deserve a homeland

I wasn't passing a moral judgement, just stating a fact

I know, I wasn't judging either.
Its just that you reminded me of Edward I from Braveheart with that post ![]()

Stop moving the net. It's not about them deserving anything. The elves need a land to call their own. Or they'll go extinct. No skin off your nose I'm sure. Hell I'm not even the hugest Elvhen fan myself. But that doesn't change the fact.

I was unaware the alienages prevented them from reproducing with other elves

Yeah cause organized institutionalization is the answer to all problems. That worked out so well for the mages.
Once again, the best thing for the elves is for them to go out and make their own country somewhere uninhabited by humans/dwarves/Qunari/darkspawn/whatever. The Dalish are nomadic people after all. Why not spend all that travelling time searching for a new homeland? Start small with a single village. Start farming the land. Invite other Dalish clans in order to expand. Get a few villages together, form an infrastructure, and then send people out to invite the city elves to your new elven kingdom.
Only tangentially related, but I wonder what the child of an elf and someone who is half elf would look like (i. e. three quarters elf).
Actually Merrill hit the nail on the head when she said that if they had their own homeland people would only try and take it from them again. At the very least they would expend valuable resources and people defending its borders from incursions. As has been shown, other races (with the possible exception of the dwarves) can afford to lose citizens far more than the elves can. The Dalish have maintained their independence all these years precisely because they never stop anywhere for long. A moving target is much more difficult to hit than a stationary one. Besides which they have nothing that other people think is worth going to war about. Land is a valuable asset, even if only as a strategic position, so people are always going to think it worth fighting over.

Mages are a whole other basket
magic is partly genetic but it also crops up seemingly at random, thre will always be mages in Thedas
"Hey, let's destroy a culture/sub-species of people, because a portion of the fanbase doesn't like them! It's inevitable!"
There's absolutely nothing stopping the elves from passing their culture on to their non-elven offspring except for the elves themselves.
The only thing being lost here is pointy ears. I don't know about you, but I'm not convinced pointy ears are so valuable that they need an entire country devoted to their preservation.

inviting in City Elves would be a bad idea, andrastia/dalish religion tensions, dalish culture/city elf culture tensions, its a tinderbox in the making

The methods used to mitigate the dangers of both mages and elves are similar (one being more extreme due it's ephemeral nature). And it's been proven that those systems no longer work. Time to look for alternatives.

which is why the City elves should be given more rights and political representation

What culture? All the elves will be gone by then.

Actually it seems that both those systems have merely come under fire, they haven't failed merely because some wish to see them fail.

There's absolutely no reason the elves' non-human offspring wouldn't be able to hold onto their culture and beliefs.

Really? How many generations before they abandon their traditions to follow the human zeitgeist (out of convenience or self-contempt)? And if humans of elven ancestry through some measure of pride or obstinance manage to hang on to their culture they're very likely to suffer from the same prejudices elves do. Doesn't fix anything.

Well, the uncharted territory south of the Dales and Ferelden (beyond the Arbor Wilds and the Korcari Wilds) seems to lead to the Thedas equivalent of the Antarctic, but I suppose the Dalish could (hypothetically) investigate the land beyond the Anderfels - the Donarks.
