Speakin of Witch Hunt, thatat DLC was already mentioning how Redcliff was on the path towards becoming a power rivaling Denerim.

It's possible Redcliff pure and simply annexed the Hinterlands and the monarch wasn't willing to risk another civil war for the sake of elves that aren't even Ferelden to begin with.

That only happens if Redcliffe village was saved; otherwise, that scenario wouldn't be plausible due to it's relatively weakened state.

A lot could have happened in 10 years to blow the Dalish boon to hell, to be honest.

With all due respect, no, it doesn't. The Hinterlands either belongs to the Dalish, which is specifically what the Hero of Ferelden asks for when she explicitly states she wants the People to have their own land, or it doesn't. What you're suggesting isn't what the Dalish Hero of Ferelden asked for when she said: "I ask that land be granted to the Dalish, your majesty."

King Alistair will say, in response, that he will agree to this royal boon, publicly proclaiming: "The Hinterlands to the north of the Korcari Wilds, including Ostagar, are hereby granted to the Dalish elves." Assuming that the ultimate sacrifice was made, King Alistair will say to Keeper Marethari at the funeral: "I agree, and while I know my people cannot truly make up for what we have done to yours, I was hoping to start. I hereby offer your people the Hinterlands north of the Korcari Wilds, including Ostagar, to do with as you will."

Keeper Marethari's response is: "You would give us our own land?"

In case you were wondering, she accepts. ;)

Basically, it's an issue that the Dalish have their own homeland in the Hinterlands, or they don't. It's either one or the other. I think the concern is that the Hinterlands basically the same in all playthroughs, most likely due to budgetary restraints in not wanting to differentiate it simply for one specific group of fans who had their Dalish Warden chose this specific boon. I don't disagree with Palidane, and I think that it seems like the import system will show some shortcomings with issues like this.

Property can belong to more than one group. And who knows, maybe there was resentment at the idea so an agreement was made for the Hinterlands to be jointly owned. Or the two form an alliance. Or one of many other things. No retcon at all.

Oh oh I know! The Dalish did something stupid and got themselves killed. Or they did something stupid and the humans killed them. Or they did something stupid and were just smart enough to get the **** out of dodge.

The Dalish Warden either asks for the People to be given their own land, or the new ruler gives the Dalish their own land. It's not a difficult concept to grasp. Arguing that the Dalish are vassals of Redcliffe - I don't see the point to it. I'm not certain why you're arguing against what was explicitly stated in Origins. Does the idea of the Dalish having their own land bother you that much?

I'm trying to offer you explanation of the Dalish actually still having the land instead of it being a retcon, so the opposite of me having a problem with them having land. Though with your attitude, I see I needn't bother.  <_<

And then someone took a step back and the wording of the agreement changed. Or the elves realized they had a bigger chance of surviving under Redcliff. Or they lost it again.

We have to remember how the boons were written at a time nobody was sure if DAO was going to have a sequel. Dalish being given land is a pretty big deal since it automatically change their status as homeless vagrants. The repercussions of it could fill half a game or more; for instance, as elves from other points of Thedad start arriving which creates tension amidst the Fereldens who don't see this with pleasant eyes; but a minuscule proportion of the players played as Dalish and asked for the boon.

So,most likely, the writers did the safe and economically sound thing and took the land back. It's disappointing for those who made that choice but it really was unavoidable.

Plus, all of the boons are one more thing to be added to the Keep, and then they have to find a way to write it into the game, so that the choice is recognized.

An alliance between the Hinterlands and Redcliffe doesn't require the Dalish to lose any degree of control over the Hinterlands. The Dalish Boon is about giving the land to the Dalish, which is why I spent the time getting the specific dialogue and pointing out that both versions address that the ruler is granting the region over to the Dalish elves.

Even the epilogue slide addressed that it was land for the Dalish: “In time, many of the Dalish clans moved to the new land provided for them in the south near Ostagar. Wary of their human neighbors, however, tensions soon rose again... and only Keeper Lanaya's leadership kept peace alive.”

I'm trying to offer you explanation of the Dalish actually still having the land instead of it being a retcon, so the opposite of me having a problem with them having land. Though with your attitude, I see I needn't bother.  <_<

So far, we haven't seen anything to indicate that there's a different version of the Hinterlands for players who chose the Dalish Boon, and as someone who had selected the Magi Boon with my canon Warden and saw it handwaved, I'd rather not see players have to deal with it; it's more than a bit irritating to see your choice and it's consequences rectonned.

This is a very long thread, but the topic caught my attention so I'll just say...

yes.

The butchering of the sublimely noble Tolkien elves into some kind of one-note Native American rip-off culture that commutes via Amish wagon train is one of the most bizarre and irrational spin jobs I've seen.

Honestly though because of how enmeshed their new lore is in the context of Dragon Age, having or not having a homeland probably won't make much of a difference ultimately.

The ruler also says they want to provide a shining example of how elves and humans should co-exist. So an alliance between the Dalish land and the Arling of Redcliffe would certainly do that since it is elves and humans living as equals in the same area, which we see in DAI since the woman whose husband died was an elf, meaning that in that area elves are apparently allowed to own their own land.

You know better than to take Epilogue slides as fact. Bioware said to take those as rumors and hearsay.

And we haven't seen anything to indicate there isn't a different version either. So there is no point in crying wolf when there is no sign of it.

If the Dalish Boon was rectonned, I'm sure there's a number of reasons that can be provided to explain why the Hinterlands is the same for every single playthrough; I doubt any of them will be satisfying for the fans who made that choice.

We have to remember how the boons were written at a time nobody was sure if DAO was going to have a sequel. It wasn't unavoidable. The writers specifically chose to have the story in Inquisition head to the Hinterlands, instead of another region like Gwaren or Amaranthine, where this could have been avoided. The Hinterlands also isn't large enough to sustain the same number of Dalish elves as the Dales was, so there can still be clans roaming Thedas.

There isn't much of an appeal in a franchise that's supposed to import your world when those choices are being handwaved, and it's effectively no longer your world.

Actually, given that there was a bug in the game that stated that the Dalish would have gotten land either way, it would have been better overall for it to happen for all playthroughs.

We don't see any Dalish elves in the demo concerning the Hinterlands; the woman doesn't have vallaslin. Unfortunately, the developers also haven't responded to fans who have made inquiries about the Hinterlands being different for players who chose to have their Dalish Warden ask for their own land.

You know better than to take Epilogue slides as fact. Bioware said to take those as rumors and hearsay.

Yeah, I recall Gaider mentioning many of the Epilogue outcomes were handwaved in the interview about why Nathaniel wasn't a main companion in Dragon Age II, as it would've been one too many.

And we haven't seen anything to indicate there isn't a different version either. So there is no point in crying wolf when there is no sign of it.

I'd hope that the Hinterlands isn't the same for the players who chose the Dalish Boon. For their enjoyment, I hope that the Dalish Boon is respected.

It's always possible that Dalish lands stop at Ostagar, and the rest of the Hinterlands north of there retain the original name and belong to Redcliffe.

That's true, actually. My human noble didn't get that boon as an option, but I still got that outcome in my epilogue slides.

If this is really the wording he gives, there there really doesn't need to be a discrepancy, because he basically gave them a stretch of Chasind and darkspawn infested swamp.  Looking at the map of Ferelden, there's still a whole lot of Hinterlands between Ostagar and Redcliffe, and enough of it would still be Blighted to act as a buffer between Redcliffe and the Dalish.

The Hinterlands are located between Redcliffe and the fortress of Ostagar (a fortress that neighbors the Korcari Wilds), so there's still a discrepancy.

Anyway, it doesn't matter as Laidlaw already said on twitter that the Hinterlands won't be different if the Dalish Boon was chosen, so it's a moot point.

Ah well.  They'd be better of in Arlathan anyhow.  More elven, less dogs.
