Here's the way this works, I'll give you a faction, and you guys tell me whether you would seek diplomatic relations, commit acts of espionage, or wadge war on them.

First faction: The Ferelden Circle.  After the latest blight, the Ferelden Circle of Magi were granted autonomy.  Although they still exist as an institution, teaching young mages to control their power and housing those who might be oppressed by the rest of their countrymen, mages are now free to come and go as they please after their studies are complete.  Lately, First Enchanter Irving's health has been waning.  The fraternities are nearly at each-other's throats.  It is possible to just ignore them, but that will certainly have damaging repercussions throughout the world.  So, your three options are...

D: Bring the heads of all the fraternities to the table and negotiate a treaty that specifies that, regardless of who is put in charge upon Irwin's death, they will aid you when need be.

E: Discover what you can about each of the factions and bribe, blackmail, and assassinate your way to a compromise that will lend their mages to your cause.

W: Go after all three factions with crushing force destroying all but the unaffiliated and the fraternity(ies) that you agree with.  In gratitude, these fraternity(ies)

There is no right or wrong.  Please leave your comments.

Essentially I'd go with Diplomacy.   The deal negotiated sounds very much like what the Circle had with the Wardens in DAO.   It worked well enough then so I see no reason why it shouldn't in the future.    It is also the quickest and the most economical use of resources.   The other options only become viable/necessary if all attempts at diplomacy fail.

Definitely diplomacy. I see no reason to even attempt the other options, too messy.

My basic approach is going to be this with every group I encounter: diplomacy first. If that goes nowhere, espionage to evaluate their strengths and weaknesses, followed by swift and decisive military action until they raise the white flag and we go back to square one-- hopefully with my opponent being smarter.

But if anyone I encounter decides to just skip right to War, it's on like Donkey Kong. Quaesitio per aspera ad astra, and all that jazz.

Doesn't using bribes and blackmail constitute diplomacy?

Diplomacy

In this case things are going OK at this point and should be given the chance to continue that way . If Diplomacy fails then straight to War .

@Wulfram:  While it's a great point, I don't think it always has to.

@OP:  Always diplomacy first.  Assassination is a regrettable alternative.  Conflict is failure, and while sometimes required (always required in video games), never to be considered a viable option.

Primarily, I'll be making my first Inquisitor diplomacy, though I'll be throwing a bit of espionage in as well.

I think Fredric Bastiat said it best "When goods don't cross borders, soldiers will." Diplomacy, unless there can be no compromise.

I have a policy in games...whatever ensures I am alive at the end of the game along with all of my companions (no one's leaving!!! mwahaha) and whatever makes my character more powerful (loot/xp)

After that...probably a mix of each depending on what seems most practical/interesting..

I'll bring the heads of the fraternities to the table, alright.

Each with an apple in their mouths. The next ones will know better than to defy the Inquisition.

I'll probably try to stick to diplomacy and espionage most of the time if possible since I want to save the strength of Inquisition armed forces to batteling the demon or other hostile faction rather than waste it with avoidable conflict. That said my Inquisitor method involved with bribery, blackmail, humiliation, assassination. I'll do whatever is necessary to win.

Diplomacy, maybe spy on them to learn more about the important parties but the carrot is better than the stick.

Cool, so most people chose diplomacy.  With the circle hard at work fighting demons so that you can close rifts, the head of the Red Templars attacks from behind.  Reinforcements will not be able to make it there for 3 days at least, but the head of the order states that no one in the Inquisition will be harmed if you turn in several key mages.  The heads of all of the fraternities except for the Loyalists will almost certainly leave you if you acquiesce, but you are outnumbered.  What do you do.

D:  Negotiate for better terms (Namely that you would get the use of a great deal of the Red Templar's resources), definitely hand over the powerful mages, and try to make it up to the other fraternities in the future.

E:  Have some of the mages confuse, put to sleep, or in some other way debilitate the Red Templars while sending a small team of subtle people to steal all their red lyrium and assassinate their commanding officers causing them to lose both their tactical and mystical powers.

W:  Find the most defensible position (probably towards the top of the tower), bottle-necking the Templars, setting up magic traps, and hopefully weakening them enough through the magic of your mages, the volley of your archers, and the strength of your walls, to make them lose enough men to force the intelligent ones to flee and the stupid ones to be easy picking for your current army and, in short time, your reinforcements.

You posted while I was writing. :P For the first faction: In this situation, I gotta go with diplomacy, though maybe toss in a bit of espionage to find what each head would like and so on. In this case, espionage just sounds like diplomacy but harder, and less likely to stand up (alliances built on "do this or this will come out" are strained ones). War -- hey, I could use these mages, right? Let's not massacre half my potential allies and **** off the large unaffiliated.

Handing over the top Mages is no compromise, it would literally be accepting an ultimatum, and since the position we are in is desperate there is only one choice, fight them using the tower as a bastion to defend, and hope that we can make the Inquistion with the help of the Mages defenses unassailable.

War.

Diplomacy for the mages, espionage for the templars. War, if the espionage doesn't bank out, but I will always side with mages.

Given that the Ferelden Circle underwent a purging fairly recently, I'll opt for diplomacy first. Going the underhanded route could get messy if things go wrong and you get exposed in any way. And if you crack down militarily and attempt to compel them, at best you wind up with a sullen "ally" and at worst, you lose the whole.

Now, if I get indications that there are problems within the Circle like corruption, I might have to devolve to other options like assassination or war, but my starting point will assume that the Ferelden Circle is still relatively free from dangerous corruption and likely to be open to a fair approach.

Diplomacy for Mages and Espionage for the Templars with a little war thrown in just incase they don't take the hint, with all the dead leaders and depleted resources that they now have.
