Espionage for both Mages and Templars.  Knowledge is power, as it goes.  Informed decisions and recon intelligence is better than trusting things at face value.

My main inquisitor I plan to keep it heavy on the diplomacy, and if I absolutely have to just sprinkles of military and spying. He wouldn't be a fan of sneaky back stabbing and spying, and military would be something he may do if he has his hand forced.

My second one is going to be military and spying way more. Hard as nails and more of a forceful character that has no time for fluffing around with sweet words. She's got a world to save and people to punch after all!

War. I would kill most and leave the more level headed groups and non affiliates alone.

Okay, most people chose war with the Red Templars, so here goes.

You along with a small group of companions and the mages of the Farelden Circle hold out in the tower.  Irving sends out a message to one of your allies (If you're a dwarf your family's private army, a qunari the mercenary band you used to roll with, an elf your clan, a human an army from Starkhaven).  After 4 days you see the Red Templars being slaughtered from the north, your allies from the Free Marches have arrived, what's more is from the south you see a pack of dogs arriving with painted men guiding them.  You cannot at them moment tell whether they are allies or enemies, but regardless, they fight like men possessed.  With the Red Templars retreating, how would you treat these newcomers with their mabari hounds.

D: Invite them in to the tower and discuss a potential alliance.

E: Send a scout to gather information about them and if caught mislead them to the point where they feel they should not fight.

W: Turn the plan against the Templars on the painted men and their dogs.

I'd send an envoy out under a flag of truce to try to discover both who these people are what their intentions are before I ever invite them in. Once my doors are open, my defenses are breached.

Send a representative to find out who they are, what they want and where they come from and only when I'm sure that they mean no harm to me and my allies, would I let them in the keep to discuss a potential alliance.- maybe also try to get an un-imprinted or master less Mabari for myself.

Diplomacy, I like the Ferelden Circle and hope it thrives and prospers with little difficulty.

My canon Mage Inquisitor is going to be the most friendly diplomatic guy Thedas has ever seen.

(The group finds a Troll eating a sheep in the middle of a farm)

Varric: What should we do?

Iron Bull: We could take it by surprise and kill it with little trouble.

Inquisitor: I have a different idea...

Iron Bull: What is it?

Inquisitor: I'm going to go talk to it of course.

Varric: What?!

*Inquisitor happily walks towards the Troll waving his hand*

Inquisitor: Good morning! I see you're eating a sheep. I love the taste of mutton too... course I normally slow roast it but I've heard raw is a good way to go.

*The Troll slowly walks towards the Inquisitor the remains of the sheep in one hand and a club in the other. The Inquisitor reaches into his pocket pulling out a bottle and sprinkling the sheep with it.

Inquisitor: That should help.

*Troll eats the treated meat and smiles, the inquisitor turns towards the group and waves*

Inquisitor: It's ok everyone he's friendly!

Okay, basically Diplomacy again.  You send out a diplomatic envoy and discover that the painted men are Ash Warriors.  They are a mercenary band unlike many others, they only accept payment from groups that have causes they find just.  They told you that their customer wishes to remain anonymous, but said benefactor has had... more or less friendly dealings with one you in the past and wishes to continue the arrangement.  The head Ash Warrior hands you a note with a seal that you do not recognize.  You ask the Ash Warrior why they were hired.  He tells you that stopping the Mage/Templar War, closing the rifts, and preventing an Orlesian Invasion are the three things their contact had mentioned, with that, he pledges the loyalty of the Ash Warriors to the Inquisition.

The head of the army from the north comes to you.  He said that it looks a bit like the Grey Warden seal, but a dragon had been added to it.  The mention of the Grey Wardens leads you to call in two of your staunchest allies, Sir Blackwall and Lelliana.  Neither of them fully recognizes it, but Lelliana notices a slight fragrance to it.  It reminds her of when she fought the Blight.  There are so many things you do not know right now, but at least you have new allies.

D: Send Josephine to Orlais and have her try to make a treaty with the most sympathetic nobles she knows in the hopes that this mysterious benefactor will feel more comfortable revealing him or herself.

E:  Send Lelliana to Orlais and have her spy on all the armies in order to discover who this potential ally is.

W:  Ignore the mystery for now and launch an invasion with your allies on Redcliff Castle in the hopes of striking a devastating blow to the Red Templars.

Your Inquisition now has a troll guarding its main base of operations.

War - The others sound kind of risky.

I think the wise strategy is to spying on all the armies then proceed with swift action to strike a blow at the enemy forces, and it's less risky than going in blind.

Espionage.

Correct the answer to read "use espionage to find out who the painted men are and why they're here," and I'd go that route.

That's essentially what you would be doing. The purpose of the espionage in this scenario is to figure out who hired them.
