How far along do you think ME4 is dev-wise?

It's a legitimate question, considering the upcoming panel in about 12 hours.

Would you say the game's core systems are firmly in place and Bioware are simply adding content to it or is it still in the main concept system stage?

Ready for alpha testing or beta testing or none of the above?

Yes, playable and core systems at least significantly in place.

But not nearly ready for release, content and polish wise.

Well, there's the slight possibility that they spring some kind of thing like "Winter 2014!" to us. I just would not bet on it.

I'm absolutely sure they're past the early concept and pre-development (whatever that means) prototyping stage. They at minimum have the game going, know what they're doing with it for the most part, and putting it in place. But... who knows what THAT means. This year? Next year? Even 2016?

If you mean 'Do you think they'd have material to show us?', I'd say yes, but it may be quite possible that they are not confident enough in what they have to show it to any extensive degree.

Considering that this is a 'development of next Mass Effect game' panel, I see it possible that they'll have material to show people, and at least some basic information. Slides with pictures? Concept art? ..May I be so bold to wonder if they'll have videos?

They could be very damn vague about this still, but I hope they're not. At this point, it just seems cruel.

not the material themselves, but rather the quality & depth of said material. those concept scenes from the first look thing were pretty lame.

I saw a tweet. A man asked whether ME4 was in early dev or late dev.

The Bioware guy responded: '' Too early for one, too late for the other. ''

Which meant to me that the game was mid dev.

I would say to expect ME4 for 2016, probably towards fall or end of year.  So i little over two years from now.

Good to know that humanity is the only thing in the whole Mass Effect universe that can do anything about anything.

I honestly hope that choosing races isn't locked to just multi-player because with DAI fans are going to wonder if Bioware cares more about Dragon Age than Mass Effect? At least when it comes to choices in that category.

That has nothing to do with care more about one or the other. I rather Mass Effect stick with humans only, so a better story can be created. If you give an option to multiple races you have to divide your resources more, instead of focusing them. That's why Dragon Age games are almost stand alone, which Mass Effect was a single protagonist trilogy.

Also, as a game franchise, Mass Effect is in another tier compared to Dragon Age. Just saying...

Why do most arguments assume that doing something different automatically means it will suck? If a game is planned and coordinated from the start to allow for a player to choose what race they want to play as, why would that make everything unfocused?

If you want to talk about things that create an unfocused story, Mass Effect 3 had plenty of moments where a lot of it's focus did more harm to it's "single protagonist trilogy" than complimenting it. Instead of taking everything that the previous games had done and have it all culminate in one large resolution, Mass Effect 3 instead chose to focus on some nameless wondering child who, as a character, is only unique to Mass Effect 3's story instead of the entire trilogy. The game is literally telling us that the death of this nameless boy is supposed to be the emotional anchor to Shepard's character even though we have already seen Shepard lose officers who were close to him/her. And as a result of making this story more focused on Shepard and the child, all of the other characters who grew and developed as character are reduced to just 'existing' since they have zero relevance on the story, especially when the ending solely revolves around Shepard and the child again. Because of this, Mass Effect 3 is as much a stand alone game from the other titles was the Dragon Age games are.

In April they said it was somewhere in the middle of development

Not in the early stages, but not close to being finished either.

It's possible that the new Mass Effect will be standalone as well, but in any case, Dragon Age is a bit different because the fantasy races are essentially just humans with wildly different body types. But I suppose it's worth seeing how DA handles the multitude of VA's for the Inquisitor. A fair compromise would be to have a proper CC for other races in multiplayer and not be confined to the arenas like ME3, but this borders on MMO, which is already something that makes Destiny look a little goofy.

They are easily at the Pre-Alpha stage, which is essentially just testing prototypes and concepts in-game.  Surprisingly enough, that's very far along in the development cycle.

Exactly, and after listening to the Comic Con Panel, it doesn't really fit the idea if the game being ''years away''. The game's been in development for almost 2 years now. Does it really need 2 more, especially with the Dragon Age team making most of the systems? I think much further ahead than they are letting on, but might want to wait a bit until N7 Day/after DAI to talk more about it. That's my theory at least.

I feel like they just said Years away to give themselves some leeway, in case it actually does take years to come out.

That said, I don't think it's Years away. I Think the latest we'll see it is next E3, earliest being gamescom. Most likely a teaser at Pax Prime with a full reveal on November 7th.

That makes sense, since I'm sure they aren't targeting a specific release windows. A teaser at Pax Prime and a reveal at N7 Day make perfect sense, especially if the game is aiming for a Fall 2015/Winter 2016 release window.

Woah, that's a year long gap, you sure it's supposed to be winter 16?
