Yeah, I understand that buying a good gaming PC and keeping it upgrades is very expensive (which is why I don't do it) but roughly £350/$400 for a console that's going to last at least 7 years without needing to be upgraded in any way sound like a good deal to me. I agree that a 2 year 'transition period' is a good idea, but by late 2015/early 2016, I'm sure 90% of devs will have moved fully to the 8th gen and the PS4/Xbox One will have gotten cheaper by then.
It's kind of a chicken and eggs situation. Devs don't want to 'abandon' the 100M or so people who only own PS3s/Xbox 360s, but at the same time, they have to understand that few people are going to switch to the 8th gen while they're still making games for the 7th gen.
$400 console that lasts years is good. Buying it and not haveing electricity or food not so much. I have a budget f that should let me save up for it in two years counting the $195 I've saved since they launched.
