Wait, they have the gall to bring back old characters but not Shepard? Yeah, I see that going off very smoothly with the fanbase at large.

Before you jump out that window, consider that they never said they intended to do such. ;)

They refused to rule it out, which is smart, just in case. They've made efforts to emphasize that this is a new story, with new characters visiting new places. I doubt any of our Normandy friends will have any real part to play.

Uh uh.  That will not fly.  If Liara or any other character from any of the previous Mass Effect games even makes an appearance in Mass Effect 4 and my Shepard doesn't.....oooh boy I will rage with the force of a thousand suns.  They said this will be a new story.  They cannot do that to me.  Not after what they did with the ending.

DS9 is a new story, but that didn't stop Worf from joining in Season 4.

There's no correlation. Liara cameos won't negate NME from telling a new story.

It wouldn't work.

I moved past that horrific ending long ago, simply so,that the entire franchise wouldn't be ruined for me. I would really prefer that no one from the old team makes an appearance, simply because I think it would likely be lame. I generally haven't liked it I the DA series, and I do to want to see it here.

If I hear background references to Primarch Vakarian, or an archaeological dig funded by Dr. T'Soni (examples pulled from my ass), that's one thing. I'd rather not run into them, though, unless they totally shock me with a quality narrative reason and well executed scene. Even then, ugh... Just let the Normandy crew be. Their tale is complete.

Can it at least be someone besides Liara? Not that I don't like her, just that she's, well, practically everywhere in the trilogy and honestly was kinda like the writer's pet by the end of the saga

HA.

I feel exactly the same. I like her, but geez is she prolific. I'm just bracing for an eternity of T'Soni.

Unfortunately, she is of a very long-lived species, too, so the specter of her return is always looming. :(

Needs more Grunt IMO.

He could well outlive even her.

I want Liara to appear but it's admittedly so I can feed on the glorious fan rage it would induce. I'm also rather fond of her character but that's secondary.

I don't see why they can't have Shepard show up as a returning character, like Hawke in DAI. They've already confirmed he survives the game if you get that rubble ending. Doesn't have to happen, but it doesn't not have to either.

After the rumor that it might be set during Shepard's lifetime, color me very ****** skeptical and prepared for a massive disappointment. Hopefully that rumor is just wack and we'll all be pleasantly surprised. Lol...

This is a very old rumor dating back to Casey's day before ME4 was even in production. I would not put too much stock in it at all.

(Maybe im just weird   )

Really like the look of it though :D

I thought the same ^_^

I love Liara.

At first, when I started playing the games, I thought, "Meh, she's alright..."  That was until I romanced her and carried it through to the end.  I mean, her closing romance sequence was just about equal to a dream that I had (and still remember to this day, oddly enough).

So, to say that she spoke to me?  Oh yah, she spoke to me.  And Ali Hillis' voice work didn't hurt things any either.

I genuinely like Liara's character and would be very ok if she made an appearance (even just a cameo) in future games.

But we all know there's one guy we can't live without... if Garrus doesn't make at least one appearance in ME4 I'm gonna be MAD

What if ME4 is set 300 years in the future? Shepard and most of everyone from the original trilogy would be dead due to old age. Long lived races like asari and krogan will still be around. So yes we could run into Liara, Grunt, Eve hell even a very old Wrex. It isn't out of the question.

I don't want characters from the previous Mass Effect games to re-appear. It's a complete tease and a ******-off. I can only imagine that it'll feel wrong and it'll break me out of immersion. Seriously, if I see someone like Liara show up I'd want to say, "It's me Shepard! You don't recognize me? Oh, that's right I'm not Shepard in this game I'm <Rank> <Lastname>." Just isn't right. I would, however, like to see or hear about the results of the previous games. But I prefer something new have nothing to do with the characters of the previous games.

I thought the transition from TNG to DS9 was fine.

Picard introduces us to the new setting, Sisko isn't a default fanboy of his but starts off hating him (won't say why, spoilers), Worf has a pretty cool storyline, and then there's O'Brien... Come on, everyone loved that guy, but how he is promoted from button pusher to Chief Operations Officer and suddenly is a major character seemed very off to me.

Well, I might be completely wrong, but I get the feeling that the next Mass Effect is being consiously separated from the trilogy. A whole new region of space, lots of unexplored or uninhabited worlds, exploration-focused, new species, with their homeworlds being featured...

It's not necessarily a good or a bad thing, but it can turn out to be both, imo. And hopefully the transition won't be too jarring.

They could do it a lot more subtly than that. Have Liara interviewed on TV about her book with Javik or something, or bump into Garrus working a case now that he is either a Spectre or higher up in the ranks of C-Sec. Just little things like that, they don't even have to interact with the character. If they did interact with the character, it would be completely in context with what's happening in the new story/side-mission etc.

Throwbacks with old characters are great and remind us that we're still in the same universe and nostalgia is great :D

I could talk DS9 all day, it's my favorite show. Especially Seasons 4-7. I still remember staying up late every Monday night in mid-1999 to catch the Final Chapter episodes. I was ten, but I'd been in love for years already. :DDD

I'm with you on predictions, here, Phaedon. A conscious and severe separation from the setting of the Trilogy, regardless of which story elements are crafted therein. Ultimately the devil will be in the details for us fans -- will it feel like an appropriate shift? When will it be set? Who are the major players, and why are certain races (my money is on the quarians and geth, for example, given how they could have gone down) virtually invisible now? How are references to Shepard and their crew treated? Am I being given ample reason to care about this new plotline?

For long-time fans, some of these questions and more will doubtless pop into our minds. It may even be distracting. But what will matter most at BioWare, if we're right, is that it's a big new playground capable of distancing itself enough to tell a new story.

Eh, to me, BioWare even hinting at the old trilogy in ME 4 would be akin to taking a sledgehammer and hitting it upon the side of someone's arm where a stitched up wound is.  Just let the wound be.   It may never fully heal regardless but the best we can do now is let it fade to a gigantic scar.

Not to mention that no matter how hard you try, you can only kill her at the exact last moment in the trilogy where you have no more squadmates :/

Why is it that's it always Liara who get's the essential plotlines? And even if you say "because Shadow Broker", it's Traynor who saves your butt with info in the end.

If anything, it should have been Liara who got hurt on Mars. Give the Virmire survivor a chance in the spotlight.

Now, back to the discussion at hand...
