Damn, just spent the last two hours plowing through this thread..
When it comes to a thing similar to Dragon Age: Keep, I hope they have that for the new Mass Effect game or, like someone else mentioned, a couple of conversations at the start that decide your canon... Like when Jacob and Miranda ask you questions on the shuttle down to Freedom's Progress or whatever that place was called...
"So, [player character], remember that person... Shepard? Refresh my memory.. were they a man or a woman? ... Ah yes, I can't believe what they did on the crucible... what do you think?, And how about that Genophage, I can't believe they did what they did... remind me, what did they do again?" and "I can't believe who they fell in love with... I can't remember their name though...."
It would probably take a while to get through all the decisions
I don't necessarily mind this method (it worked fine for KoTOR II) but it can look really clunky and artificial - especially if it goes on for like five minutes and it includes a discussion about a galactic hero's romantic life. ME2's excuse that they were testing Shepard's memory was one thing, but I can't see them doing something similar in MEN if the goal is to summarise the whole previous trilogy.
The Keep is a much better idea because it doesn't require the player to do anything in the game, and they can import dozens or hundreds of separate choices.
