Interesting. I was expecting a completely different time period though.
As long as they make the game as awesome as the original Mass Effect series, this shouldn't be a problem.

My reaction to hearing that it is set in the same time period...
I am happy to hear that co-op will still be their focus for multiplayer though!
Well... I don't know... mako being back is really great news at least.... I hope they can make a really great characters that looks & sounds as cool as the male commander Shepard we know (never played female Shepard. Everytime I want too I chicken out. I think Shepard is one of the coolest heroes ever)... if they are going to choose an ending, I'm glad that it looks like it'll be the destroy ending. It's the only one that makes any sense + it's of best interest to Shepard... they really should of changed the endings when they had the chance so we wouldn't be in this mess.... I want my hero to be a definitive one like Shepard instead of a no face like Skyrim/Dragon Age Origins.
In regards to multiplayer, I'm very, very glad it'll be more team focused instead of anyone being able to Rambo it solo with the poorest playing pugs just because they have the cheesiest weapons & powers on their side, lol. Don't want it to be person VS person though, though maybe BioWare can make it work? I don't know.. Just want a very nice team game with lots more maps this time and no hazard mumbo jumbo rip-offs.
I'm still going to give up my hopes that they'll pull it off right. Some feedback I recall some fans liking about past Mass Effect games that I want to be great in ME4 too is; a) the music. Everyone loves the music of part 1 the best. It was so, I can't find the words for it, but awesome, like exploring Noveria & CItadel to that music was pure bliss..
exploring the original Citadel in part 1 was so awesome. Make it very big like that again and bring back them elevators back! c) I'd like for the game to be more balanced and offer difficulty levels for true fans to unlock after quite some time and really have something to keep them going challenge wise. I understand casuals have to be taken care of with StimPacks and what not, but don't forget us that love some challenge. Please. d) Don't want to say much other then just do what you guys feel is right. And be very weary of certain fan feedback, including my own. Just make it awesome how you guys believe it to be so. After all, it worked for ME1, right? That, and I still have strong faith that you guys can still do this series justice. I've really had great fun playing all 3 games very many times, can't wait for more of the same. Good luck & best wishes to everyone at BioWare working on this.

Fixed.
Cool stuff, thanks for sharing.
I hope that this new Mass Effect is closer to ME2 than ME3. Kind of hard to top off saving the galaxy in terms of story line but a more squad focused game like ME2 could be fantastic. Any multiplayer news is also appreciated, good to know that they've decided to go co-op instead of competitive.
I'm torn about the Mako. On one hand it seems like they want to improve the driving mechanics and get it right this time, which is great. Don't want to end up with another one of those:

On the other hand... It seems to be unarmed. What good is an AFV without a big ass gun on top of it?

I agree with your post, but this part kinda boggled my mind. I'm a middle aged man and had never even considered playing a game as a female character, and I had played ME2 through 2 and a half times as a male Shepard before recognising that I had found a game which could just possibly be my game - the world in which I wanted to lose myself when playing. That thought was confirmed within, oh, I'd say maybe 5 lines of hearing Jennifer Hale's voice as FemShep, who for some reason I had customized in such a way as to be sure I wouldn't get tired of looking at her on screen. I never used my male Shepard characters again, but I played every class as a different looking Femshep, splitting some of them and running dual Paragon / Renegade versions. When ME3 came along I played at least 3 of those imported characters before doing one single runthrough as a male, which I kinda skipped through. Shepard is a female in my universe. Jennifer Hale's voice acting is the best in the business. Do yourself a favour and set aside the time to play it. You can discover your inner lesbian or be a one-man-woman to Garrus Vakarian ffs!!!
In the same spirit, with regard to the next game, if there should be the option of playing a human female who needs to wear armour when going about her daily duties, it is my sincerest hope that the same graphic artists who designed the Kassa Fabrications Femshep Leg Armour in ME3 are given increased input into the next game ![]()
As this is the MP forum, I'll add that any news which confirms the continuation of the co-op nature of the game is welcome to me. I would like it to be developed even more.
It always made the most sense to set any spinoffs in the time period after ME1 to before Arrival anyway. Especially the 2 years when Shepard was MIA.
It always made the most sense to burn the galaxy to the ground and start fresh.
Awaken races that were hiding from the Reapers.
Throw in some N7 Operatives.
Unlock some dormant relays.
Kill off the Quarians.
Interesting. I was expecting a completely different time period though.

Not really excited to see a "different N7" story. Shepard's the only N7 I care about. It would have been nice to have a non-soldier protagonist like a merc, colonist or corporate operative. I'm also hoping there aren't too many cameos of Shepard's crew. Hearing Alistair trot out "swooping is bad" in DA2 made me ill, and I'm a big fan of Alistair. I sometimes think Bioware doesn't get that certain characters are popular mostly because of their special relationship with the protagonist. Without the protagonist (the Warden, Shepard) the characters lose their context and some of their appeal. If Garrus shows up to "calibrate" something in ME4 I will not be happy. No Vakarian without Shepard in ME4, please. New, cool squaddies like a Batarian or Vorcha would be better.
I don't understand why people are excited about the Mako making a return. Even if they somehow manage to make it a joy to drive the thing, there is very very little they can do with it in terms of actual gameplay.
The things I like about the ME games are Bioware's story-telling abilities and characters. I like the conversation / making choices system and how it affects the world around you. And most of all the combat system - shooting and blowing stuff up with a wide range of cool weapons and special abilities with a couple friends is awesome. That's what I would like the devs to focus on, instead of trying to add mini-games, vehicle sections, quicktime events and other crap like that.

That was what I was thinking as well.
It neatly sidesteps the problems of choosing a "canon" ending to ME3 and, if they go for that particular time period, Shepard being around. It also means they can use the existing background universe information than have to spend time on developing new stuff (like if it were set 200 years after the events of ME3, for example).
I'm kinda disappointed, as I was hoping for a post-Reapers universe as the setting, but I suppose I can live with this. Good to hear that co-op will remain the main focus of MP as well.
Meh. After all the stuff Bioware said about ME3 pre launch and comparing their quotes with what we actually got, I'll be taking anything they say about this game with a giant grain of salt. User reviews are what I'll be looking out for.
During Shepard's lifetime?! ![]()
How the hell is that supposed to work - especially if the emphasis is likely to be on exploration? What would be more important than fighting the Reapers during that time?
Anyway I'm looking forward to two things:
1. Coop multiplayer - if all else fails, this should still make the game worth buying
2. Exploration and the Mako - hopefully we get that retro sci-fi vibe again, or that feeling of driving out in a planetary rover into the middle of a desolate alien world and skyline, feeling like the first person to ever have set foot in that place - bring back the romanticism of space exploration! ![]()
I'm sure the characters will be great - they always are. The story could be a hit or miss - if it's good then fantastic, if it's bad then it really doesn't make much difference. I'm not confident in a good main plot in any case.
I was hoping it would take place after ME3 with your ending choice shown, but I guess this will have to do. Also, I am not looking forward to the Mako; I hated that vehicle. The co-op sounds good though.

Fighting the Reapers isn't important whatsoever to most of the Galaxy. Even after the "Geth Attack" on the Citadel in 2183. The galaxy is big enough that you can have a lot of other things to do in three years between 2183 and 2186.
Of course that doesn't mean that in the future they can set something post ME3. Probably waiting on that a while so people forget about the ending a bit, and they can pick a canon one.
I'm not really surprised that it would take place concurrently with Shepard's story. I've had a feeling for some time that the next ME game would be set during the reaper war.
Nice to hear confirmation that they will be continuing to focus MP on coop instead of competitive.
I've been traumatized. Every time I see Mass Effect and butt in the same sentence all I see is that horrid Krogan fanart.

So basically, Commander Shepard is not dead yet in this game. They said that Shepard's story is over, the new games will move on etc. etc. They themselves can't think of any decent way to propagate the story once the reapers are gone, it seems, maybe because they fudged it really bad.

Maybe not to most of the galaxy - but if the protagonist is human and likely in the Alliance (judging by the armour and mako), then they can't ignore Shepard and his/her story, unless...
...I imagine if set between ME1 and ME2 - that nice 2 and a half year period where Shepard was out hunting geth and then on the operating table looks like what they might go for.
My other confusion would be introducing new races - if they are powerful and/or ancient as led to believe in some early info, then how come they would not have at least been mentioned in ME3? This goes for anything whatsoever that could potentially affect ME3. Going to have to be very careful, or simply retcon stuff as they go along.

If they can retcon Starkid and his lame cyclic logic, that would be nice.
