It get especially jarring in ME3 (or 2? I forgot.) when you drink with Chakwas and they talk about how they never say Shepards first name. You'd think she'd say it at that point.

ME2, when you bring her some brandy(?). Have to say I actually liked that moment, felt it was very tongue in cheek from Bioware.

Although naming the MC is a nice feature, I'd be okay with a predefined name instead since it can be kind of awkward to use someone's last name in a romantic relationship. The name would have to be a unisex to help save time and resources as having two separate names (one for each gender) would be difficult to manage.

They wouldn't necessarily need a unisex name. You could have the character's first name only said once or twice during a romance path, for example. That would limit the amount of lines you would need to record.

But having a unisex name would make things a lot easier and faster.

I wouldn't like this. Being referred to "Shepard" and "Commander" or even "Spectre" was fine by me, but being called, say, "John" all the time would ruin the immersion for me.

I don't think anyone would want their character to be referred to by the first name all the time. Obviously in certain circumstances Commander would be more appropriate, like for example if being addressed by junior military personnel who aren't involved in romancing the protagonist. There are other circumstances where the last name (or the rank & last name) combo would be a better fit. And last names work fine with friends. It isn't unusual at all for friends to use each other's last name, particularly among men.

If a first name was going to be used in dialogue it shiould only be during with characters who have a close relationship with the protagonist, and in an appropriate setting. During the Shepard trilogy at most that would been the final romance scenes and maybe the chats with Spacer Shep's mother.

I would imagine if we were given a first name that it wouldn't mean that all of sudden no one would say the last name or rank, ever. Just like kids would say Mr. Nelson to me, while my wife said my first name when I get home from work. Would that be immersion breaking for you if it was in the game?

How would this work in terms of VA? And what about those obviously offensive and stupid names trolls I've their Shepards? I don't want to be watching a video starring D*ckbutt Shepard.

I would prefer our protagonist to have a fixed name both for male and female.

It would be a given name by the developers

Before the game you're given a very lengthy intro where, for some reason, the PC has to say countless lines into a microphone.

This can take up to a few days, but after you've said all the lines, you're ready to start your adventures in the MEU.

I just stick with the last name or title of the character. The name I give my main character I can relate to and not some random name that is given for the character

Well, Commander Shepard was named after the first Astronaut.  Its likely the new protagonist will have a name based off a similar space hero.  Maybe Armstrong?

He was the first American in space (astronaut), not the first person. That honour goes to Yuri Gagarin

Yuri Gagarin was a cosmonaut, not an astronaut. So Raizer's statement was correct.

Cosmonaut, astronaut, taikonaut, vyomanaut. It's all the same thing, the only difference being a different political view and a need to distinguish themselves from 'the other'

I have a answering machine where a robotic voice reads out the names of whoever is calling. It is always in the ballpark, but it is not perfect because it will pronounce them kind of funny-like. For example: Larry-three will be pronounced "La-air-re - tree". Perhaps they could implement that in a future Mass Effect, except with all the bugs ironed out.

I still prefer the way ME trilogy did it, "Shepard" already feels so much more personal and close than "Warden" all the time and I still have the freedom to name him/her whatever I want. It's a perfect balance. Shepard is a really good last name that fits a hero. And it's not like in real life I don't call some close friends by last name, especially if it's a cool last name.
