I think not even Bioware knows, or rather I think there is no concensus on what the direction should be within Bioware.

They know.  They're just not revealing yet.

Didn't Bioware confirm two new races that we'll encounter in the new game? It seems difficult to introduce two new races who weren't involved in the original trilogy if the game's set 'somewhere in Shepard's lifetime'. Unless of course, we feed the IT and Shepard does survive the reaper war to live a full life and become incontinent and inappropriately racist.

"You big stupid Jellyfish!"
"Granddad, that's not okay to say that!"

With exploration possibly being confined to isolated regions of the galaxy not under reaper threat or outside council controlled space; I wonder if any of the worlds we will see will be developed like Ilium, or will they all be barren/verdant rocks  or backwater pre-spaceflight civilizations (this is assuming during the ME trilogy).

With the E3 images I saw what looked like a post reaper invasion galaxy (I don't think all the images were Tuchanka). I kind of imagined our hero being some merc scavenger that picked up a piece of lost/discarded N7 armor, slapped it on, and then we dive into whatever his/her story will be.

Not so sure what is going on now.

Was that actually confirmed?

The rumored PAX fan panel supposedly showed concept art for two new races, but I don't believe that existence of that fan panel was ever confirmed.

If ME4 happens during the final stages of ME3 then maybe the new protagonist ends up working on finding something that will fix all of the mass relay's that Shepard broke...?

So is it confirmed now that it takes place during Shepard's life time?
Or is it still up in the air?

video or it didn't happen. I want to hear them say it.

I refuse to believe Bioware would be THIS stupid!

Definitely this!!!

I watched Bioware's CC panel and never heard anything mentioned about the new ME being in the same time period as the first ME trilogy. What I do remember is them mentioning that Commander Shepard wouldn't be featured. Which I'm fine with. The ME3 ending was crap and I don't want to be reminded of it at all. So I'm hoping that this next installment is hundreds or thousands of years after the events of ME3.

Shepard won't have grandkids because Miranda can't have babies. Unless they adopt, of course.
