As it says in the tittle. Do you prefer the type of Villains that seem nigh impossible to defeat without going through total hell? Or do you prefer a Villain that can be on par with the Protagonist? The sort of Villain that can match the hero blow for blow and they constantly try to out maneuver each other?
Do you prefer David Vs Goliath type villains? Or Rivals?

Hero blow for blow.
Neigh impossible to defeat villians tend to lead to crap like the Catalyst to solve the issue. No thank you.

For me, definitely worthy rivals. I get a lot more satisfaction out of going toe-to-toe with someone like Loghain than slashing at a gigantic zombie dragon until it dies. I can appreciate the scope of fighting the Archdemon, sure, but a true equal test of wills between two people with similar but differing convictions will always be more compelling.

I like a powerful enemy, but not on the level of Reapers. A good example might be... X-men vs. Apocalypse but not Fantastic Four vs. Galactus. Rivals tend to get on my nerves because they often avoid early deaths with plot armor... a rival is only okay if you don't meet face to face until the very end, like with Loghain.

I tend to prefer a mixture of both. With the preferred outcome being once the foe is defeated they join in defeating the larger threat.

Why not both?

I like feeling like David overcoming Goliath. That's why I like playing as elves.
I pretty much felt that vibe as my City Elven Warden's triumphed over the human noble Loghain.

Goliath beating David would be interesting
I like that. It allows for the Heroic Resolve trope to come into play. The Villain can spend all his time beating down the hero, for some reason they just keep getting back up.

Playing the underdog is fun always. Overcoming challanges is more rewarding that way. However...

Playing as an underdog is pretty old hat and boring.
Especially when most Goliath-like bad guys aren't very compelling or interesting.
Having the hero and villain be equals allows for a more complex relationship and more opportunities; than the usual "The Dark Lord Evil McIronfist wants the plucky farmboy hero dead, but with friendship and plucky-ness the farmboy prevails!"

Rivals. Find them much more interesting.

If I am actively on the Side of one of the Sides, I tend to like the Rival Thing more.
However, if I am outside and have to choose one of two Sides, I usually dislike when both Sides are equally matched - I like it much more if I could help David defeat Goliath or help Goliath crush David. Equally sided Factions I have to choose between are much less fun in that Sense. You'll never get the Feeling "I saved you from Destruction" or "Haha, puny little Enemies".

I'm a huge fan of the rival approach. I'm not a huge Mass Effect 1 fan, but I liked how Shepard and Saren were in many ways foils of one another. I love it when the hero and villain are in a sense mirrors of each other.

Both. Make a goliath type main villain but a more personal rival one to match up against throughout. The rival doesn't have to be evil but should at least be a total dick (None of those 'later pokemon game' rivals that were all just your freaking best friends)

Considering that you run an entire faction in DAI, would a Rival not also be a Goliath?

I like them both, but it suddenly got me thinking. Have we had a modern example of the 'Hero' as Goliath? Superman vs Lex Luthor kind of thing - where the villain has no chance save for the hero's code of honour? Could such a thing work in a game where morality can often be dismissed quite easily if the player chooses?

Rivals! The Sith Warrior antagonist for the prologue in SWTOR is one of my favorite "bad guys" ever. When there is an enemy so powerful and "un beatable" like the Reapers or something it isn't fun because you know in nearly every game you will win the end anyway so what does it matter how strong they are? With a rival it's so much more fun seeing them come back and jab you if you win a battle or maybe always one step ahead of you it is just so much more satisfactory to beat them.

Goliath in the Sense "You should never have a Chance".

Villains who go through a character arc are the best imo.
Apocalypse (X-Men Apocalypse, the hax one) is not a good villain, and people shouldn't emulate this type of villain.

I like the mind gaming / maneuvers / one upping one another that a rivalry can have. I'm not really into David vs Goliath type of villains they usually end up being defeated by dumb luck or oversight on their parts that make them look really stupid, rather than anything my hero does.

Rivals.
Example I hated what the reapers turned out being, but Saren was my favorite villain in the series. Not Galactus but Dr. Doom.
