Whats funny is besides TES, I can't play a bad character. I've tried, but it's actually hard for me to physically press the button on an evil choice. TES though my favorite part of Morrowind/Oblivion/Skyrim was the Tong and DB.
Can we betray our companions?

You don't know that. Maybe they found something new about themselves.
Maybe, the price was right.
It was a great deal of compensation, was it not?
5 sovereigns, if I remember correct. You get 2 for cleaning a single district from gangs, 6 for completing initial Sebastian's quest, which involves killing 3 gangs of mercenaries. Go figure,

ok, so once I betrayed Alistair, but it fit into the story ... my character was pragmatic and cold as a block of ice, so he agreed with the older Grey Warden (don't remember his name) and let Loghain become a member of the group he wronged so much
I never betrayed Fenris though. Never liked him much, but sice I played DA2 only one time, I never got the chance to create an evil Hawke (because betraying Fenris would've been pure evil - it wouldn't even be right from the pragmatic point of view!).
As for the question - my guess is - ... in DAI there will be some plot concerning politics and where politics is involved there are usually schemes, and where are schemes there are betrayals ![]()
Also ... I think I wouldn't be able to betray Cole (I wasn't able to betray Fenris). I'm too soft, I guess and never been able to create a pure evil char.

Considering betrayal was possible in Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age 2, I'd be shocked if it wasn't possible in Dragon Age: Inquisition. One of the things BioWare wants to do is make more compelling bonds between the player and his/her companions. We already know that you have the capacity to run them out of the Inquisition if they do not agree with your choices. I'm sure there will be a few moral dilemmas were a few of the members will just not be able to tolerate your actions, regardless of if you romanced them or not.

I like to have the option to betray companions, but I can't say I was happy with the options we had in both previous games.
The Loghain vs Alistair is good cause you have to judge what's more important. A sacrificial lamp or a loyal hypocrite. But you don't really betray Alistair, he betrays you because he is a sentimental idiot. The choice is pretty easy though. If I'm to become king, Alistair can burn for all I care. If he is to become king I prefer to keep him loyal. Anora is a snake, too dangerous to allow her to rule alone.
DA2 is beyond stupid. Why the hell an "evil" guy would want to sell Fenris for 5 gold or give away Isabela for nothing. You don't gain influence, replacement. Nothing. Even if I regard them as my pets, they are mine and they have value. Giving them away for nothing is insulting. If the game allowed us to come to an agreement with the Magister, I'd be game sure, even if there wasn't an immediate benefit.
I hope that I can make hard calculating choices in DAI. I know it's not a Total War game, but come on, it's an ongoing war. If there is a time for deception, that's it.

For all the talk about the cost of lyrium in his skin, 5 gold as a payment IS insulting. It's like putting a label "I'm cheap" on your forehead.

You don't give Isabela away for nothing, you do it to get rid of the Arishok without further bloodshed. (And possibly to punish her for lying to you and causing the Qunari to almost burn Kirkwall to the ground and kill a bunch of people, depending on your Hawke's views on these things.)
The price given for Fenris is insulting, though. I think it would have been a more interesting decision if it had been a lot of money. Will your Hawke sell out a companion for one hundred sovereigns? Two hundred? As it is, there's no temptation to do it for the money since it's a tiny amount relative to what you've earned and spent by that point in the game. The only Hawke of mine who did it just wanted to screw Fenris over because he kept insulting her girlfriend and mages in general.

That girlfriend cries though, if you do it. I don't think Merrill would be able to forget such an act, given her characterization.

My Hawke figured Merrill would get over it. And she seems to, since she never brings it up again and the romance continues.
I think it's more out of character for everyone else to go along with it. (Well, with the exception of Anders, who is actively happy to see Fenris sold back into slavery.) You'd think Sebastian or Aveline, at least, would want nothing further to do with Hawke after that.

I focused more on the evil aspect since the thread is about betrayal and the op talked about feeling evil. But I can't really say that I like the options I have because the impact would be the same if I could just sacrifice a party member to avoid a bandit attack. To elaborate.
I see 4 possible reasons to turn her over.
1. Cowardice. You are afraid to fight the giant guy, give Isabela away and be done with it.
2. Appeasement. The problem with this is that the conflict ends the moment Arishok gets the tome back, the rest is a matter of policy. So sounds more like cowardice. No big picture to consider unless you care about what will happen to Qunari without their Arishok ^^
3. Justice. While valid it's still problematic cause it's one sided. Personally I don't feel that the Qunari should pass judgement. Tevinters are the aggressors so the Qunari should bother with them and not with the petty thief. The people of Kirkwall suffered the most from her negligence and greed. The option to turn her over to Kirkwall justice would make this a good one. Fighting for what you believe is right.
4. Personal gain. No such thing in this instance.
So other than justice for the qunari, what difference would it make if you put any other bad guy in Arishok's shoes? Even with the Fenris case there are more things to consider than Isabela's. It's just that ultimately it doesn't worth it.

I did give Fenris back to his master once, but was in a playthrough where I was plauing a mage who was romancing Anders.

If Isabella isn't my LI for a particular game, I only save her from the Qunari for the reason of I can't spec Varric for Melee DPS.
