Let's be honest here.  Did you really need a healer for DA2 anyway?

Yes, yes we did on higher difficulties. Having the ability to use Pots and get Healing too was rad.

I'm talking about the intended main story; not what the player and/or character is most interested in.

I don't care at all about authorial intent.

But even if I did, the intended story doesn't even necessarily take place. There's no guarantee that the Warden even survives Ostagar, let alone makes it past every other obstacle and defeats the Archdemon.

It is entirely possible to play DAO and not defeat the Archdemon if your Warden doesn't happen to live that long.

Frankly, I'm glad the healer archetype was given to a controversial, opinionated character in DA2. Personally speaking, I've always had the impression that "the healer" is stereotyped as a meek and inoffensive character, and I'm always glad to see trends being bucked.

As far as DA:I goes, if healing is implemented in such a way that it is a backbone of how the game functions, I hope all mages have equal access to healing spells. My hunch, however, is that healing will not be such a big deal—there are going to be many different ways to skin that cat, and the "healer" archetype might not even exist.

Don't let Anders catch you saying that...

I normally play a Rogue and on hard mode playing DA2 DLC Mark of the Assassin I needed all the healing I could get against the demon in the Sky Altar I died numerous times complete party wipes on Hard mode.

Anders being dedicated healer seemed to drop a lot thankfully I had those mythal grenades to rez fallen party members.

Truth be told I really enjoyed Anders in Dragon Age Awakening and had him in my party almost everywhere we went loved his party banter, but I fully despised him in DA2, Blending with Justice seemed to have turned him into a whiny baby instead of the Anders personality in DA:A.

Aside from some odd issue's with my play through of DA:A I have Anders, Nathanial and Velanna with me when I go after the Mother and Justice, Oghren and Sigrun stay at the keep, at the end Justice parts with his head at the keep so I keep wondering when Anders had time to talk with Justice to join together, hehe.

But back on topic I like the idea of having healing spread out and not just being based on one character, though my party make-up usually consists of 1 fighter, 1 rogue 2 mages, me being either a Mage or Rogue.

Speaking for Nightmare, Anders is not a healer. Panacea spec is useless.

The reason he is the strongest companion is access to the best spells in the game (Haste, Heroic Aura, Petrify, Walking Bomb, Firestorm and Heal) and Martyr, meaning that he has no cooldowns. Also he has potentially more offensive power than Merrill, since he has 20% more damage passive from vengeance but he spents most of his time casting martyr while Merrill is autoattacking.

Who's the "we" here? I get by without a healer just fine.

Right. A player can refuse to reload at any time.

Well, Hawke also wanted a life and to restore their family name.

...*snip to save space*...

Letters also reveal that Hawke was VERY well-known and popular at the village before the Darkspawn thing happen which is something a Mage should actively avoid, due to possibly drawing attention to Templars, as Bethany was taught as such by Malcolm.

I actually agree with a lot of this. It's pretty much how I explained the situation to myself when I played the game. A lot of it didn't add up perfectly if Hawke is a mage IMO. Also I think the story supports Bethany being alive more than Carver.

I know a lot of people say (and the trailer implies) that mage Hawke is the "right" choice for the playthrough, but I somehow wasn't convinced. I was also not sold on Isa being the default LI as the trailer implies, because the story makes more sense (to me) with a romanced Anders. I understand why they wouldn't put Anders as the trailer LI cos 1. he's male so their only option would have been to either show a m/m pairing or a fHawke protagonist, both of which are not "mass market" material and 2. it would be even more foreshadowing for the conclusion than the actual game shows.

Personally I prefer Anders with a mHawke but that was more to do with how Anders talks and interacts with a fHawke (as a woman I didn't like it when I heard some of the dialogue changes and what it seemed to imply) in comparison to mHawke. Story wise alone, I absolutely believe that fHawke/Anders parallels with Malcolm/Leandra was very much intended by the devs, though I personally feel it works with both Hawke genders.

Right. A player can refuse to reload at any time.

Reloading is you investigating what happens in a parallel universe in which different choices are made. In the universe where the PC died, the PC is dead.

I can think of no other reasonable interpretation.
