Look ! another blocke that claims Bioware is focusing on romances when it is the fans that are so passionate about it, how wonderful.

Oh and all those buzzwords: "pandering" "disturbing trend", etc...

Is it really pandering when you are pleasing the majority? Or is it smart marketing? Some people are not happy unless they have something to complain about.

...To be honest, I've read a few fantasy novels, seen a lot of fantasy films, and played video games which were of a fantasy genre. And guess what? Most of them had a subplot surrounding romance. And this doesn't pertain to just fantasy, but in sci-fi, action, whatever. It was just all part of the storytelling- it was an ingredient which played with a lot of people's emotions and got them feeling along with everything else in the plot. And there wasn't much choice and it was usually set in stone.

The reason why it seems like a big deal for Dragon Age (or Bioware games in general, really), is because now there's an element of choice and customisation for a playthrough to speak to a player's emotions depending on who they are. Or if you're just not happy with romances in general, there's the choice of not having any at all. GaymerX2 isn't a great example to support this argument because GaymerX by nature is a convention which celebrates and brings to light a feature and a representation of people in games that's not widely represented, and the reason why romance is such a huge thing there is that when you're gonna be addressing this idea of gender and sexual orientation, you're bound to include themes of relationships, so... why not discuss it at GaymerX since it's pretty appropriate. They're not going to discuss it at Comic Con... unless they're keen for it.

So... I think your fears of Bioware pandering to a subset of an audience are rather unfounded. But hey, you could always say "screw it, I'll play Witcher instead" which is a fairly common, uh, reply.

Thread closed.  Self-promoting link removed that denigrates both us and parts of the fanbase by misrepresenting a conference.

Suggesting that attending a conference called GaymerX (a conference dedicated to LGBT content) is us focusing on romance is disingenuous.  If you have an issue, ask GaymerX to hold their conference at a different time.  It'd be like getting mad that we'll very likely discuss the game at Geek Girl Con in October, and how some will undoubtedly (and incorrectly) feel that we're just focusing on the women now!  It's a conference, we talk about the type of content that fits within that type of conference.

Most of BioWare's marketing for the game has not been romances.  You're seeing what some fans discuss.  Our philosophy has always been romances as being optional content, and that is still the case.

It's likely that you're so frustrated with others talking about it, that your disdain for it causes you to overstate its occurrence based on what some fans talk about.
