Why no sheath for weapons?

I saw the inquisition gameplay and I don't understand why weapons don't have a sheath. It's ugly to look at your character and see the weapons "flying".

Is it too hard to implement a sheath for the weapons, something that it doesn't look like the weapons are flying?

Thanks.

Let me guess, " it would add to the costs of the game's development ", or something along the line.

They could, sure, will they? Well, probably they'd actually want to but maybe they can't because money / time / resources.

Clipping issues and resources.

The only way the DA team could get away with scabbards is if most of the swords were the same shape and sizes. The Witcher, which does have scabbards, is a good example of this. Geralt can have many different weapons with different stats, but they all more or less look the same.

If the DA team were going to have scabbards there could only two basic sword types, with all your one handed swords looking nearly identical except for the hilt and perhaps color, and all your two handed swords also being of the same size and shape.

I'd be okay with that so long as the basic designs looked good, but I'm sure many wouldn't.

I don't care about scabbards. I care about story and gameplay.

Beautiful weapons are not ugly to look at.

In fact, I prefer not having scabbards so I can appreciate my blades as I roam around.

It is of course a matter of opinion, but it would look REALLY stupid if you are in combat with these silly scabbards stuck to your back.

No thanks.

Silly? - They protect your blade from weather/dirt, the protect you (and your clothes) from being cut into constantly etc.

I'd rather have all swords/daggers look alike (i don't like most of those anime like weapons either...I prefer realistic designs...those others really are an eyesore!) and have nice looking (encrusted with jewels, having runes inscribed on them etc.) scabbards, than what we have now:

Out of proportion weapons (DA2, I am looking at you!), that are shown to weigh almost nothing ;)

greetings LAX

I gotta be honest, having the ability to hold my weapons by having them float mysteriously behind me magically tethered to my back would be pretty badass. I'd feel all like, "fear me and my floating instruments of death!!!"

A quick search of these forums would come up with at least 5 topics on this subject. It's been talked to death. Either we have it, or we don't and you can ask again next game ;p

Hell, the Witcher series even had sheaths for BOWS, of all things.

Also, the thing about weapon sheaths imposing a standard for shapes actuallty makes more sense. Most of the weapons in Dragon Age are rather unweildy and impractical artistically designed, and trying to have them make sense would be very hard indeed. And let's not speak about the whole "every type of weapon is worn on the back" thing.

As for other games that did it right, Skyrim had different sheaths for every weapon that isn't a two-hander. It isn't really that hard to do if you plan on giving weapons a proper sheath from the start. Assassin's Creed also gets bonus points for showing that most two-handed swords are indeed supposed to be carried on the belt like everything else.

I get the feeling that the DA devs simply just don't care about realism. On a "serious" next-gen game, such disregard for logic is particularly irritating.

Having scabbards on your back is silly in and of itself.

Try re-sheathing a sword with a typical sheath on your back, you'll understand why.

In order to make that even possible, you need a very special type of scabbard, a backhanger baldric, which cannot fully sheath the entire blade's lenght:

It's much more maintenance-intensive than the regular sword gear and belt.

Thing is, the weapons used on the witcher are all historically inspired meaning they generally have the same shapes making sheaths easy to implement. Dragon age on the other hand has very drastic differences in the weapons designs making it hard to not only design functional sheaths but also to handle clipping issues. All those resources put into something that many fans dont consider a major issue by any means. I'd prefer those resources be spent on making more weapons and armor

Honestly I think most of the problem here arises from the godawfully designed DA2 weapons that are being ported.

Why is it so important for people to have realistic weapons in a fantasy rpg? This isn`t "Medieval sword fighting simulator 2.0"

I don`t really care if weapons are sheathed or just "magically floating on your back", I like how the WItcher did sheathed weapons and i`m fine with DA "floating". I`m even fine with moderate clipping, like with long hair/long/unusuall weapons.

I agree with the OP, sheaths and scabbards would be a very nice addition to the game. I'm also hoping less weapons (especially daggers and short swords) will be stored on your back and instead hung around the waist, as that's not just more realistic, it also looks much, much better.

A lot of Fantasy worlds try to be very realistic with their weapon and even armor designs (e.g. Game of Thrones) mainly for greater suspension of disbelief. Sure, fantasy settings can go a little over the top in their designs but some designs (like the Hawke's Key) just outright defy physics and logic.

It's probably already imported into the game. My preference is that they go full on realistic design or not at all. I'm not interested to see hyper-stylized combat animations but with "realistic weapons". Either they tone it down on both ends or neither. From the looks of it, they've gone with the latter option so it doesn't bother me.

Hm, i see, so it`s a personal style preference then? It`s just i get the impression that "if it isn`t realistic it doesen`t have a right to exist" or something along those lines.

It's a personal style preference of wether you value consistency over the Rule of Cool, and that's what makes the difference between the more "serious" western RPGs and the over-the-top eastern RPGs. Some of us simply thought that Dragon Age would benefit from steering more towards the former rather than the latter.

Even if Thedas is a fantasy world with magic and 6-limbed fire-breathing reptiles, human bodies are surprisingly similar to their real-world equivalents, and as such, the audience expects said human bodies to work according to familiar laws of physics.

Carrying any kind of sword on your back is also unrealistic because it is historically inaccurate. Nobody did it, because of practical concerns (except for late scottish claymores that could be carried in a back-hanger for parades).

It would have a right to exist in a fantasy world if it was at least explained in a lore-friendly way, as in "fereldan warriors traditionally carry their gigantic swords on their backs in order to appear more intimidating and to handicap their impressive stamina for more honorable fights" or whatever.

Because they look about 1000x better than stuff like Hawke's Key.

-snip-

I see your point, thank you for the detailed explanation. I guess i'm just always treating the games more like,"there is this crazy fantasy stuff and everything makes sense even if in the real world it wouldn't make any" so the realism or a lack of it doesn't bother me. And since there weren't all that much explanation in lore about fighting traditions/weapon forms and such it doesn't feel like anything is out of place.

Hayder's Razor. I got a warning from a mod when I badmouthed this weapon and it's designer. All the more reason to hate it ^_^
