I do not think MENext is going to be a side story, and here is why.

The link above will take you to a video of the Mass Effect teaser shown at E3 earlier this year. While you watch the video, pause it at the 0:47 mark and then look at the person in the right hand corner. If you look closely at their head you can make out the shape of what seems to be a helmet. But I don not think it is a helmet, I think it is a Prothean. If it is a Prothean then that means this game has to take place after Mass Effect 3 because the only one seen in any of the games was Javik who was only in Mass Effect 3 and he was with Shepard the whole time. So if I am right then this can't be a side story (unless they write it in a way that Shepard didn't know there was another Prothean around which in my opinion would not make much sense). Or I am totally wrong and it is just a helmet. Either way it is a credible theory.

Not to mention, they want to leave Shepards story and there's no conceivable way to do that if it takes place during it.

Good point.

One thing that *might* point to a sequel is that both the armor designs, and the design of the new Mako, look much different than what we saw throughout the Shepard trilogy. If the story was a sidequel I would expect that N7 armor would fairly similar to what Shepard had in ME3, and that the Mako would be identical (or nearly so) in appearance to the vehicle we had in Mass Effect 1. That there have been some changes in design might point to the game being set at some point after Mass Effect 3.

That doesn't necessarily guarantee a sequel of course, it just raises the possibility of it. It is also possible that the devs are introducing new armor designs and a radically different Mako in a sidequel, even though it wouldn't make much sense in-universe.

That was also something I was going to point out but I did not because I thought my post was already long enough.

Looks like a Salarian actually. They have those big orbital bones.

Sequel-ish.
