I have to say that given all the effort put into DA:I's playable races, I'm a bit disappointed to learn that at SDCC, it was revealed that ME4 will feature a human protagonist yet again. Especially considering how much I loved ME3's MP and playing a Krogan.

Having a DA:Origins type beginning was especially what I hoped to see too, now that the universe has been fairly developed as well.

What are your thoughts? They're still years away from seeing the projects full potential, so if they were to add the option to play other races as well, would you want that? And what would you like to see, were they to do it at all?

If they ever do multiple playable species in the series I think they can't go wrong if they stick with the fan favorites. Obviously they can't make every race playable, but Asari, Turian, and Quarian (in addition to human of course) would work.

Hopefully human will be the only race option, just like the original trilogy.

I don't really care. I only hope that, if they do decide to do multiple playable species (SPECIES, PEOPLE. You've been playing multiple races since ME1), they won't do them halfassed. Halfassed meaning using the same lines with a different sound effect for different species, NPC's not acknowledging your species, the same skills and classes on different species etc.

If they do it, I really hope playing a different species isn't just playing like some human in costume.

I was betting hard money they will take the Origins path. It would've been great.

I guess having so many VAs is simply too costly. You can't use the human dude to voice a Krogan.

Pretty sure they never said that humans would be the only playable race.

That's true, but maybe don't have a krogan protagonist. If they had just let say humans, asari, turians, salarians, quarians, they could have the same VAs for all the races, but apply filters where necessary (i.e. quarian/turian voices). I don't think that would be vastly more expensive than how they're doing DA:I

Were you there to hear them say otherwise? Because that's one of the details they revealed at the SDCC.

I never expected the main character to be anything other than human: but I still think my idea for playable squad mates holds merit and would be the answer to the demand for playable alien races...

If humans are the only playable race mass effect lost another customer. I want variety and learn about the different races through their eyes.

Like in KotOR. Yeah, that could work.

This is why I felt multiple species would be hard to implement decently. Either that or a lame silent protagonist. I'm fine with keeping it human.

Actually they revealed a picture of male and female humans titled "Your Hero". They never specified if Human was the only option. Not really too detailed.

Good decision. If you suddenly make the other species selectable then they are no longer "alien" since they will just act the same as a human character with each choice. They would need to drastically change whole dialogues or even remove conversation choices altogether to make it work properly.

By not being playable, they remain alien to us which is how it should be. ME3 multiplayer is different as there is no story to worry about.

This man has apparently has experience playing both Argonian and Khajit in Skyrim. ;) (Just in case its not clear, this a slap at Skyrim where it doesn't matter what character you play as.)

Indeed, we will just end up making "human" decisions even though we are supposedly not a human.

Pretty much every species in Mass Effect is inspired by human traits and characteristics. Playing as that species isn't going to make it any less true.

Hell, more than half are bipedals. I hope Bioware goes way more alien. They need to.

Quite.

The greatest disappointment for me was the Prothean race.

In ME1, there were those statues of weird creatures on Ilos, which although basically humanoid, were just about sufficiently exotic for my taste. I imagined them being sedentary, using automated life support systems, few in number, reproducing through cloning etc.

When they announced that there would be a living one in ME3, I hoped we would find him in an ancient underground facility, sat on a big chair with tubes attached, looking at monitors.

But they redesigned them and explained the statues as being of some other species.

I hope that there will be several species to play as in the end, they neither confirmed nor denied this at SDCC. Trying out different species is extremely fun and I hate being limited to the most boring one all the time. Sure, I'll like my human character and everything, but being able to create and play as an Asari or Quarian would simply be so much better.

they didn't confirm only having human protagonist, really from what little we seen i don't think they are far enough for that to be set in stone. I mean when dragon age started giving out their information they were showing off pre-alpha video and proper details but with mass effect we have concept art and video things and cryptic clues. So we will most likely not know if it will be human only or not until later in development i say around Q1 next year.

I

would like for most of the races to be playable, but logical council races only would to the smart place to start. I mean there are no possible genocide, they are in good standing with other races, similar political powers, and there are only three other races beside humans so fitting them into the same story without it basically being reskinned human is possible.

Didn't DA:I start by saying "only Human" until some time later they saw just how stupid that was?

well the bipedal part was because of their engine back in ME1 was using the same skeleton. but i would like to see more alien culture and modal going forward.
