Eh.

You're never gonna get an adaptation of any "epic" series that'll please completely. I've come to accept that and I don't really bother with arguements that go against it. "They should put this in they should put that in."

Even the Ralph Cartoon left Tom Bombadil out and that was closer to the books than the first two movies were.

But yeah.

Harry Potter

Game of Thrones

Lord of the Rings

Just be happy that they never got the same treatment as that abomination of an adaptation i-Robot.

What

The

****

Seriously. The whole point of the novel is to say "ha no" to Robot uprisings and guess what happens?

A Robot rebellion.

lol.

On it's own it's pretty good though.

Oh and yeah. Directors need to make a series from the first three Isaac Asimov Foundation books.

I would love to see Hardin's coup and hear the quote "violence is the last refuge of the incompetent."

P.S

Honestly though.

I prefer the Hobbit movies to the book.

People praise that novel like if it were the greatest story ever told.

It's awesome. Don't get me wrong. And it'll always be the book I lost my literature virginity to.

But I won't let go of the fact that Thorin is a much more interesting character in the movies than in the book.

**** that love triangle though.

That can go burn in hell.

Silmarillion or GTFO. :D

That could actually be done in the form of a series of short films, and it could be done well.

Nobody will ever get movie rights to that book though.

Once Christopher hits the dead books we will.

For the guy who brought so much of Tolkien's masterpiece to us.

I sure do hate him a lot xD

Well not hate

I'm sure he's a swell guy.

But I just don't like his attitude to some things.

But certainly you understand his apprehension.

Certain things seen in the various films could well be interpreted as disrespect towards the source material.

And the Silmarillion can not be made in to an action adventure film without changing, skipping or glossing over many of the most important parts. Things would have to move at a much slower pace than the Hobbit or LOTR, with lots of dialogue and those kinds of movies don't fly nowadays.

To be honest, I'm not sure I would entrust it to Peter Jackson either.

Sure. But interpretation is almost always bias. So Chris isn't getting sympathy from me other than seeing his father's work "butchered."

Well boo-fracking-hoo.

Whatever he's seeing it could have been A LOT worse. My opinion on the films is very high because I choose to accept the inevitability of adaptations. Literature is the highest form of story-telling due to its hundreds of years of experience and maturing. You'll be hard-pressed to find things better than books.

But whatever.

I wouldn't enjoy anything if I compared everything to literature. Literature has unfair advantages in almost every case.

Oh

The Silmarillion should just be an anime.

Anime can do anything.

Doesn't have to be made by the Japanese.

But yeah.

Wouldn't be popular though because "omg cartoons."

But high budget animation would do wonders for a series like the Silmarillion.

Why?

Watch Legend of the Galactic Heroes. It's not high budget (I think) but it kind of shows how a Silmarillion adaptation would be better off with anime.

And LOTR is considered slow by many. It kind of is. But the pacing is excellent. So you don't notice it that much.

However, because of the way the Silmarillion is written... eerrr... it's gonna be hard. "X went to Y and then 20 years later did this and said that" makes for hard book-to-other-media translation. As for dialogue? IIRC it has less than LOTR's. Since it's a history book and doesn't really focus on characters.

However.

I'd say a mini-series consisting on a few high budget movies focused on certain episodes would be better.

Beren and Luthien.

Children of Hurin

Earendil

To name a few.

But you'd miss out on a lot of stuff. So maybe not. Unless there were like the Harry Potter films and got tons of movies. In that case you could focus more on the micro and gloss over the macro. But that might be a bad idea because the macro is what the book is focused on.

I think PJ is fine. The Hobbit is kind of over the top but yeah, it's supposed to be a light-hearted adventure so meh. Doesn't bother me.

Wow, what a flat teaser. Without Weta, Jackson is lame. Only reason to follow this train wreck is the artistic design and not Jackson's hack directing.

What would you think would go best?

Assuming we're continuing on with the convo.

First I would say a prologue then Flight of the Noldor until they land in Middle Earth.

Goddamn... I hate to say it, but I doubt I will see this in theaters. I will likely wait until DVD.

:(

I knew Jackson was in trouble when the frame-rate-gate happened, but I attributed it to our tech-obsessed/tech-ignorant culture. Looks like it really was his fault. Wow. He really did get so many breaks with the LOTR trilogy. Almost as if it were meant to happen...

I saw the second in cinema and I will see the third one there too. I'm looking forward to it.

Since I'm not a devout Tolkien fan who has read the books I don't care about accuracy or whatever. I've enjoyed the past two movies so far and the third one looks great.

Yup. I'll hopefully see it on Friday.

There are so many places doing triple bills of all three this Thursday overnight onto the third's release on Friday... I'm almost  tempted, but that'd be more than eight hours of fillm.

After Fellowship, I'd never guessed there can be a day when Peter Jackson makes movie about Tolkien's world and I don't give a ****. Two Hobbit movies later that day is here. Both of the previous movies(well, first one at least) have a good amount of individually powerful, beautiful or nice scenes. Yet, sum of all parts makes a very modest, ugly number for both of these movies. Every single action scene is at least 10 minutes too long and 15 times too video game.

Orcs, Goblins and co look like some pathetic flashbacks from dawn of CGI; technical quality and know-how is evident, yet no artistic drive or vision has been there to truly make them alive. Hobbit's orcs look like stock models of CGI world. Like..imagine Internet of CGI creature world. Imagine CGI creatures browsing this Internet. Now imagine MSNHotmail.com of the said Internet.  It has stupid, smiling, annoying no-soul stockmodels designed to appear appealing to everybody and  insulting to nobody, just like ours. Every single one of these models looks like every Orc in Hobbit.

Contrast to awesome costumes meet subtle CGI that is present in LOTRO feels huge and difficult to comprehend.

Basically I mislike the movies more or less for same reason I mislike most summer action blockbusters, Transformers etc.

Ultimately, the biggest problem must be with Jackson not truly wanting to make these movies in the first place. There is no drive, passion or love for it here. Two first films  were at least one hour too long each. Each hour should have been taken away from the terrible action scenes. There is no content here. Only quick time event action scenes from a bad video game I don't want to play.

Dumb and calculated Xmas movies.  There is no harm in that unless somebody actually mentions Hobbit movies in same sentence with Fellowship of the Ring, which inevitably taints the latter.

Steve: [lists all the feats Smaug has done prior to the movie] ... yet in this movie you come out as the bad guy. Why is that?

Smaug: That is just typical. Liberal Hollywood bias. It is hard for conservatives to get good roles in this town.

Ahaha, that was pretty damn funny. Anyhow, am set to watch this next week. Enjoyed the previous ones for what they are, shouldn't see a problem why this one wouldn't prove entertaining as well.
