I might have to go see it again before I really settle my thoughts on it all, but I really enjoyed it. (Enough to see it again!)

I agree with a lot of the reviewers saying there was some pacing problems with the introduction. Its odd starting a film with such over the top action scenes like Smaug trashing Laketown and the White Council at Dol Guldur. And even they don't seem long enough. Smaug's down before the title even appears.

 

A few scenes later follow the same trend. The events of several days are boiled down into a few sentences exposition from Bilbo at one point. It just seems a little odd that after all these stretched hours of film, such pivotal moments still manage to feel rushed, but there it is.

 

I feel like it really hits its stride soon after though. The battle and everything that entails starts to kick off, and its about everything you could want. Everyone gets a moment (even if for characters like Beorn that moment is criminally short). The scale of the battle is insane, but I really don't feel like the CGI reliance is as much as a problem as some would make it out to be. Outside of a few more outlandish moments, the actual combat is great, and feels less like a choreographed dance now (key elf character's aside). There's some real weight and impact behind the fighting. Naturally the whole thing goes on a bit, but there's variety to it all (so many wacky troll designs... the much cheaper looking ogre things aside)  

 

It juggles one too many characters again. Legolas serves very little purpose still and I question why characters like Alfred were even included. On the other hand I'd say moments like Tauriel's defiance of Thranduil really justified her inclusion. Dain and Thranduil are both pretty great. Thorin and Bilbo really stole the show however, and frankly Bilbo doesn't get enough time again. They're just such great characters here, and I've always liked both actors. The ending hit me pretty hard given that, even though I obviously knew it was coming.

 

All in all I feel it rounds things off fairly nicely. But I'll really have to see it again to finalise my thoughts on everything.

So, I won't be able to go see it for a week or so. But can anyone tell me if it ends with Bilbos relatives moving into Bag-End and selling his stuff because they thought Bilbo was dead in a ditch somewhere?

Well the Trailers and the title changed made me realize the movie was probably going to be 2 hours of straight action.

So it's to be expected they sped through the ending.

 

Still though, I am excited to go see it.

I saw the movie last night and LOOOOOVED it!

Basically cried throughout the whole thing. Bilbo and Thorin goodbye scene. Tauriel "Why does it hurt so much?!" and Kili. Father/son "Your mother loved you so much" Thanduil and Legolas scene. UGHHHH.

 

The action scenes were great. Legolas was BAMF although the falling stair-climbing was very WTF. I wish they hadn't done that. Because throughout most of the film he was just awesome.

 

Tauriel's fighting was better; they did her little justice in DOS; I know they don't film these back to back (or do they?) but it seems they worked with the actor a lot more here and she performed very well in her fight scenes.

 

I knew Fili and Kili were going to die, but god... just ripped my heart out.

 

"Tea is at four; don't bother knocking" RIGHT IN THE FEELS-UH, geez, Bilbo!

 

And I'll confess it; I'm a Bagginshield shipper; Bilbo intending to plant an acorn (oak tree), Bilbo unable to explain to Balin what Thorin was to him, that goodbye scene, seriously, Jackson had to know about us loser fangirls and fanboys. But thanks, PJ

 

Romance (real and imagined) aside, the action delivered, but tbh, I'm such a huge fantasy nerd that it would've been hard to displease me. I love LOTR and the previous two Hobbit movies, so there was little chance I wasn't going to enjoy this.

 

Love the brother/sister bond between Legolas and Tauriel, too; there was not originally going to be a love triangle, and Tauriel's actor was pissed when they wrote it in. I don't think Bloom liked it either as he said in an interview that Legolas sees her as a sister, so that's how I interpreted the relationship.

It was pretty much 30 minutes of preparing after Smaug's death (who got killed off even before the title screen LOL) and then 2 hours of non-stop fighting. And I mean literally non-stop.
