In one of the pictures of Leliana there is a painting of a man stabbing a woman through the chest with a sword.

At first I thought that it might actually be the warden stabbing "The Mother" but decided that was fire around her and the bottom was her dress and not the big insect blob lower body part of the mother in a really primitive style.

May have been obvious but whatever.

But looking at the armor......does it remind you of the armor that the first Warden wore to kill dumat?

The obvious explanation would be Archon Hessarion (or something.  First thought was Yossarian, but that's definitely not the right book) killing Andraste with the Sword of Mercy in the moment of his conversion.  But that's without seeing, or at least remembering, the picture you're referring to

This is exactly what the painting depicts.

This is it.

The Imperium captured Andraste because of her husband's betrayal. The Archon in charge of her trial demanded she be burnt at the stake, but as the fires consumed her, the Maker spoke to him and he instead gave her a mercy killing by plunging his sword through her heart.

Ten years later, he converted to the Chant of Light and helped spread it throughout Tevinter.

More like at the moment of her death she revealed herself to Hessarian as Dumat in human form and he repented. Gotta love conspiracies.

Still a great tangent reference, though. Respect.

Or he was already predicting the appeal her religion would have on the opressed non-mage masses and planned the best way to lead that charge.

Well I went with Andratse is Dumat because -203 AE. Kind of suspect that such an influential and powerful figure was born the exact same year a century old Archdemon dies. And Cathaire mentions that Tevinter fell to famine after their crops were burned. Sounds draconic to me.

Forget the mage theory; Andraste was the original OGB.
