Back on topic: I can hardly fault Loghain for making the most reasonable choices he could in a chaotic situation that demanded immediate action, in the face of having to deal with limited information. He was stuck in a "lesser of two evils" bind, and he did what he thought he had to do to solve the problems at hand.
The fact that Loghain completely owns up to having committed horrible actions (provided you recruit him) and fully excepts any and all kind of judgment from the Warden upon the completion of the Main Quest (including execution, if the Warden feels like it) speaks volumes about Loghain's character.
