I'd prefer to keep multiplayer out of my singleplayer game.

One of the elements BIoWare games have always lacked is a true cooperative experience. I'm not talking about the horde/firefight multiplayer rip-off in Mass Effect 3. While it was fun for a while, it ultimately was tedious, redundant, and offered little fun or interest once completed a number of times.

When I suggest a true cooperative experience, I'm referring to being able to search and explore the galaxy along with a friend. We have been seeing early on with this new generation a pivot towards more persistent, online worlds and more cooperative experiences. Whether we look at Destiny, Far Cry 4, The Division, Assassin's Creed Unity, there is clearly this new push towards enjoying great story-driven experiences with friends.

Why should Mass Effect, and BioWare in general, be any different? I can only imagine the amount of fun I would have had playing with a friend in KotOR, Jade Empire, Dragon Age: Origins, the Mass Effect trilogy, etc. We somewhat were fortunate enough to get a taste of what a cooperative experience would be like with Star Wars: The Old Republic. However, I don't necessarily want an MMO. What I do want is the ability to join up with friends and explore the massive galaxy the next Mass Effect game will undoubtedly offer.

How does everybody else feel about a true cooperative experience? BioWare wouldn't even have to necessarily incorporate a multiplayer dialogue system like SWTOR. Main story missions could be designated for single player only, while side missions and pure open world exploration with the mako could be open to friends. This is essentially the approach many other games are taking in order to maintain a quality single player experience, but also offering the option of making it better with friends.

Feel free to post your thoughts and concerns below.

Not just "no" but "HELL NO!!!"

I do not want my enjoyment of a game to be dependant on others

I do not want others' enjoyment of a game to be dependant on me.

One word fixes all this: optional. And if this co-op mode has no effect on single-player (not like ME3 did), would that be acceptable?

I agree with this totally.  I still want multiplayer though.  A different menu item you click on or ignore on the main menu.  I am totally in favor of mp in mE4 and like it in ME3 but I would not be in favor of a coop in single player.

It take smor ethan words to fix something.

Abstract concepts often have a hard time becoming reality.

In other words, you'd have to convince me "optional" has any more meaning than "pixie dust"

Personally I am hoping for something similar akin to SWTOR did, with having dialog tree that other people can join in on. Very clever mechanic.

Sp will always be king, but I wouldn't mind a few co-op side missions or something of the sort. Maybe meet up on your ship do some exploration or resource gathering type stuff.

Quoted for truth never really cared of social aspect of the game. Having co-op missions for me actually break immersion. Please just no

Agreed. If we have co-op as part of the mass effect trilogy, can people honestly say they would've still been so connect to Shepard and the characters?

In SWTOR you roll to choose dialogue, generally someone always wishes a different option was picked. I just don't see co-op working without immensely taking away from the immersion, story and characters, in exchange for some gameplay with your buddy.

As the gentleman above stated, this would be optional, unlike ME3's forced multiplayer experience. None of your concerns would be founded.

This is a very likely possibility. BioWare certainly has the experience and expertise to pull off a true cooperative, choice-driven experience.

If they make an underwhelming cooperative experience, it will come across that way and people will hate it. That's what Ubisoft did with Far Cry 3, and many were upset they just didn't make a true cooperative experience. I'd rather BioWare just go ahead and do it instead of wasting development on something nobody would like.

Mass Effect is like a movie to me. When you experience it with others, that merely enhances the experience. That why you would see a movie with friends or family. Video games are no different. If both players are immersed in the game experience and are having fun, how can that be a detriment to the immersion? Deadspace 3 is a great example of a cooperative-based game that was absolutely incredible with a friend. Having two protagonists, which was its approach, was an ingenious way of sustaining the immersion while enhancing the fun. A very underrated game.

mass effect is really the only current bioware franchise they could do it in. All they'd have to do is make it so your buddy's shep is a merc who never takes off his helmet, and whenever youre not using him to have a friend play with you, he's sent elsewhere to go work with the rest of the N7 or something. The only time he takes off his helmet is when you have a buddy with you, and any dialogue they can chose is done with a different VO, and would only effect the story in terms of their reactions to how you do things. other than that everything would be perfect for co-op in mass effect, and the me3 multiplayer confirmed it.

A true cooperative experience is definitely possible. As you suggested, ME3 has already achieved this, albeit in a more limited and redundant fashion. It's not a matter of if BioWare can actually pull this off. It's more of a matter of is this something they'd like to do. I think going open world for their RPGs is a large leap in the right direction, as BGS has proven for decades how amazing open world games actually are. Now if they'd just allow us to play with a friend in these large open worlds, then we'd be getting somewhere.
