Mine is kinda ...odd whenever i do a Goody Good playthrough i always pick the party members who are more ...evil base Morrigan Sten Zevran the members who would most rather have you not give away your money to a stranger lol.  In my Evil playthroughs i pick the Good characters who don't want you kill a whole clan of Dalish just to have a Werewolf army or a Golem army or a whole god damn army of Templars--- AAAAGH! man thats such a badass army!~ Werewolves , Golems , Dwarfs and Templars oh and the normal Soldiers...hehe come and get some Archdemon. !

hehe as you can tell i love the evil armys you get when you play as an evil character lol but what does your main party always end up as? i barly use Shale and Dog just cause Shale leaves if you want a Golem army and Dog well doesn't have much to say.

Make it rule to change each playthrough, for variety's sake and getting new dialogue, but alas Dog is almost always left out. Sorry, pal, but you just don't contribute enough to conversations.

Dog does have some nice party banter, though.

Warden (usually a mage)

Alistair

Leliana

The final slot varies.  If I am not a mage then Wynne for heals, if I am playing my mage it's Zevran--who has great banters with everyone.

I rarely recruit Sten, Dog sits in camp, Morrigan is with me only till I get Leliana and Oghren usually goes with me in the deep roads (where his dialogue really shines).  Shale usually comes with me to the deep roads as well for her backstory (especially since I rarely recruit the golem army).

The templars suck as an army, though the damn mages tend to fireball me and my party as often as they hit the darkspawn so both are about equally sucktastic (except the mages can still fight once the AD does its leap past the barrier and you need ranged to hit it), and I find the Dalish and their bows a lot more helpful than the werewolves.  I play on normal mode so pretty much deal with everything with just my 4 man group except at the courtyard in Fort Drakon.  Then I summon Dalish to pelt the enemies bottlenecking me with arrows while i go for the casters.

Early days, when I still believed in the need for a rainbow party, it was usually Alistair, Leliana, and Morrigan doubling on CC and heals.

Now, the only constant for any of my Wardens is that Alistair is in the party, though I like to leave him at Eamon's during the Landsmeet arc, especially if I'm doing the Slim Couldry quests... other than that, it's entirely situational and varies from Warden to Warden and roleplay to roleplay.

My Surana ran with Alistair-Wynne-Morrigan.

Chantry devout Warrior!Cousland generally used the God!Squad, AKA Team Andraste - Alistair, Wynne, and Leliana - on the odd occasions when she had a full party.

Blood mage!Amell somehow settled into a party of Alistair, Morrigan, and Zevran. (Poor Alistair...)

Mahariel's usual party was Alistair, Leliana, and Morrigan. The mage choice was purely a roleplay decision, and actually hindered the party, I think, as Healer!Wynne would have been more useful for the 2 Ranger!Rogues + Warrior. :-/

I never take Sten out of camp, unless I want him to attack the Warden in Haven. I only use Shale and Oghren in the Deep Roads. (My current favourite party for the Deep Roads is three warriors and a mage: my Amell used Alistair, Oghren, and Shale; my Cousland used Alistair, Wynne, and mostly Oghren.)

And I like to take Dog, if possible (or Extra!Dog, because the mabari is the living, breathing symbol of what what we're fighting to save, amiright? And also, no Dog, no Stick throwing. And it's not Dragon Age without the Stick.)

The templar army is actually pretty useful against the darkspawn general in the alienage, they constantly cancel his magic abilities while tanking the other darkspawn. I also found an pretty nice strategy for the fort Drakon courtyard, however, it requires patience. Simply hold position the moment you enter there and have an archer or mage pick the enemies one by one from an distance, and in ten minutes or so, There will be only the mages and the dragons for you to deal with.

Now, as for my party, I usually go with Wynne as the healer, Leliana as the practical rogue, lockpicking, traps, buffs with bard talents and etc, and usually either Alistair or Shale as the tank, with my warden being an tank warrior himself. My prefered party is aways of one mage, one rogue and two warriors to hold the frontlines. I usually switch Wynne for Morrigan once I reach level 14 and I can make her an spirit healer.

LOL Ten minutes!!!??  I lack the patience for that.  I just hold back and have the Dalish pelt them with arrows, and close in on the casters with my group.  They cast that "red circle of suck" spell and I can't seem to dispel that with mage dispel OR Alistair's Templar dispel ability so I try to take them out as quickly as possible.  As I pointed out though, usually I just four man it.  Something incredibly epic about finishing the game without losing a single man in your army.

That's when I even fight the battles.  Usually by that time I just want to reach the end and use console to /killallhostiles.

For me, it varies from character to character, but I do try to mix it up. For my main party, I almost always take my love interest with me because the love interest banters can be quite funny. My current run I've got Alistair, Leliana, and Wynne, which is a good core group.

However, I think the group that most surprised me was my recent Amell who took Zevran, Sten, and Oghren (occasionally subbing in Shale for Sten or Oghren) as her main party for most of the game because I wanted to use characters I don't normally use on a regular basis. They actually ended up being quite a stellar team, and the banter ended up getting quite hysterical at times, particularly Shale flirting with Sten.

Warden, Morrigan, Lockpicker, and whoever complements the Warden for that quest the best. Morrigan and a lockpicker are always in the group. If Warden is a rogue, then the lockpicker can be a tank, more dps, caster, healer, it doesn't matter. Did I mention that Morrigan is always in the group?

For my recent teams it's been:

Warden
Leliana
Zevran
Shale

Quite a bit of comic relief between the bottom 3.

Lmao, trust me, after dying over and over again during that particular segment, I decided patience makes perfect. The "red circle of suck" is curse of mortality, isn't it? It's just as annoying as crushing prision. I remember I lost only a couple of soldiers during the final battle, 4 or 5 during the market segment and the Alienage was the biggest hit, almost half of the force that I summoned was wiped out.

I think the core party of the game is Alistair, Morrigan, and Leliana. They have pretty solid synergy and a lot to say. The only questline where I'd diverge from this core besides wanting variety is the Circle for Wynne and the Orzammar quests for Shale and Oghren.

- I don't like bringing Dog because he has no commentary.

- I don't bring Shale too often because the stomping sound irritates me. She always ends up dead after the Anvil of the Void questline too.

- When my character is stupid enough to recruit Sten, they don't bring him much because he's super boring.

- When my character is stupid enough to recruit Zevran, they  don't use him much because he doesn't care about anything but himself. He also has few opinions. He even tries to abandon his oath in the middle of a blight just to protect himself from the Crows.

- Wynne's alright but the old lady isn't that interesting. I also tend to play a mage and like to use Morrigan as well so I don't need 3 mages.

- Oghren generally isn't recruited until near the end of the game as Orzammar is the last questline I do. All he thinks about is sex regardless.

And like Cody2Hottie says, bringing characters who are at odds with you or each other provides the most entertainment. That's why Morrigan/Alistair are essential because they never agree on anything. I did the same thing in DA2 with Fenris/Anders/Merrill or Aveline/Isabela. Rivalries are fun.

I am pretty sure Oghren most often thinks about fart jokes.

My most common party is:

Warden (tank)
Leliana (archer/lockpick)
Morrigan (damage)
Wynne (heal)

My favorite orgin is Cousland and I think he should be in massive armour, but using two mages is so good.

Curse of Mortality, yep that's what it's called.  I just refer to it 'affectionately' as 'the red circle of suck'

My choices tend to depend to some degree on what my Warden is, but usually it's:

Alistair - Tank
Wynne - Healer
Dog - MDPS (gogo Extra Dog Slot mod) - I always have him tasked to go straight for enemy Mages and Overwhelm them.
And then I move the others in and out according to their relevance to the plot and/or funny dialogue. Generally I use Morrigan unless there is a plot reason not to; mages are just too OP not to use. I have a fairly major RDPS>MDPS bias anyway.

I often go without a rogue due to the Lock Bash mod (it's not like anything amazing is found in chests anyway), so my team is often two Warriors, two Mages, or one Warrior, three Mages.

Warden - obvious

Dog - extra dog slot

Alistair - always - tank and also because he is warden's colleague and he is not likely to be the one to pick up glass vials which break and produce a revenant. He is also not likely to find a gravestone surrounded with wards and think let's disturb them. **** another revenant.

Zev - assassin

Leliana or Morrigan for ranged attack balance

Everyone goes on their personal quest and whoever fits the scene - Oghren and Shale in Orzammar. Zevran in the Brecilian Forest (although not all that fond of the outdoors)

They get along well and don't talk back very often.  The banter between Wynne and Zevran is priceless.

Alistair - Weapon and Shield Templar/Champion Warrior tank

Leliana - Archer Bard/Ranger Rogue dps

Morrigan - Spirit Healer/Shapeshifter Crowd Control mage

This mainly happens because I get them before everyone else and therefore I get the best control over how they level.

My current Warden main party will consist of Sten, I think he's the only companion that I have yet to fully use.  With a little Morrigan/Leliana thrown in there since I'll be ploughing both of them.
