What I have found in my playthroughs is that pacing is important. Dont do it all at once but spread it out through the game so it actually fits into the story better. Same goes for the new game, of course its going to be boring if you do a dozen exploration missions/planets in one go so its better to pace yourself by spreading them out.
Yes! When I play ME2 and I scan "All the things" when I'm in between missions and in the same system, it feels a lot less "grindy".
With my idea, I think it would help the pace in that your ability to explore (and maybe do key missions) will be blocked unless you unlock a new mode (or modual) of travel. For example, if a key mission requires that you equip the Mako with a module that allows it to go underwater, then you'll have to tackle the missions to get that upgrade first. That's one of the things I loved about the Witcher 2. You had to prepare.
And this idea of upgrading your vehicle shouldn't just stop there...
