What I have found in my playthroughs is that pacing is important. Dont do it all at once but spread it out through the game so it actually fits into the story better. Same goes for the new game, of course its going to be boring if you do a dozen exploration missions/planets in one go so its better to pace yourself by spreading them out.

Yes! When I play ME2 and I scan "All the things" when I'm in between missions and in the same system, it feels a lot less "grindy".

With my idea, I think it would help the pace in that your ability to explore (and maybe do key missions) will be blocked unless you unlock a new mode (or modual) of travel.  For example, if a key mission requires that you equip the Mako with a module that allows it to go underwater, then you'll have to tackle the missions to get that upgrade first.  That's one of the things I loved about the Witcher 2.  You had to prepare.

And this idea of upgrading your vehicle shouldn't just stop there...

In addition to upgrading your vehicle to access certain areas of a planet (or just certain planets in general), there should also be the need for and ability to upgrade to reduce the effects of environmental hazards.  For instance, remember those that Hammerhead mission in Mass Effect 2 where you had to get to a checkpoint before the extreme cold shut down your engines? What if you had the option to upgrade your vehicle to better withstand these harsh environments?

Also, it would be great to be able to add modules to your armor that would allow you to explore outside of the vehicle!  In Mass Effect, extreme cold or heat necessitated that you not stray too far from your Mako or you'll die.  Well, allow that to happen BUT also give us the ability to upgrade armor with components that would buff our armor.  Maybe there are certain nooks and crannies that are only accessible by foot and take a while to explore.  Longer than your regular armor could handle.

I think that would be pretty sweet.

Hey, Bioware said we'll be surprised by how far they go with this game.  Ok.  Challenge accepted.  Surprise me.

The Hammerhead is the DeLorean of the mass effect universe.  The Mako is a Mustang, classic stands the test of time.  (I've always wanted an old school mustang with a large cannon mounted on the top.)
