I'm not a fan of this practice, but selfishly, I'll still be doing it to get a small morsel of DAI as soon as I can.

Hopefully, forum goers are polite enough to keep spoilers either in their own threads or within spoiler tags.  I don't plan on posting anywhere outside of that and possibly Twitching it.  But yeah, it's definitely going to force people into blackouts a little earlier than they were hoping for.

Well, that weekend would be when those with connections get the full game earlier anyway. It always happens.

I'd watch your Twitch stream.

Poor Microsoft. :(

But yeah, the real villain in this story is Sony for refusing to do it.

I don't know if I'd call Sony a villain necessarily for not doing it, but it IS stupid to not give your gamers another choice and it IS affecting those who would like something like this on their PS4s.

Shows how premature some people's thoughts are.

Justinia is convincing me to at some point put down $5 and give it a shot.

"It is a good idea" she said to me five seconds ago on Xbox Live

"Too bad my hiccups stopped" she said after I said that I said what she said

Then silence

Edit- Then there was giggling

I don't know if I'd call Sony a villain necessarily for not doing it, but it IS stupid to not give your gamers another choice and it IS affecting those who would like something like this on their PS4s.

The problem here is Sony is in direct competition due to their own service models, PS Plus, which EA access is modeled after, and Playstation Now, which is coming soon. I bet the only reason they refused it was because it undercuts their own model of free access for a fee, and I bet it would be a competitive fee as well, say, $30-$40 a month for their library of supposedly 100 games off the bat, if they were smart at least.

Sony is basically out for themselves in that case. EA likely was offering it to both systems as a service model for their games, and its actually a good one, basically $30 a month to play a bunch of titles, instead of buying them for $60 a pop is really good.  And for digital content the 10% off all the time for Xbox One is really tempting, so $10 DLC becomes $9 DLC, with further deals it could be even less.

Honestly, this is a very clever move on EA's part. Xbox One I think is a bit wise to provide the service model, although the only issue now is the double paywall, which will be hard to swallow, but financially its fairly solid. Even if you do only a month of EA Access, that's $5.00 on top of a $60 subscription, the cost of one new game, and you get a number of them for that price for the month. Pretty good deal honestly.

Yet another snub of PC gamers. This is getting seriously annoying.

You would be correct.

People here seem to be confusing trials with demos, when the two aren't exactly the same thing. A trial is essentially a locked version of the full game, where any progress made is fully registered and can be used in the full game. Demos don't exactly work that way.

Anyone do the Kingdoms of Amalur Demo? You basically had the full game at your disposal minus the main questline, and after the tutorial you had a 1 hour time limit to keep playing the game.

I expect the early access to be the same thing in most cases, except it saves progress and you get it for much longer to play, allow you to do what you want for a time and if you enjoyed it, let you buy it for 10% off their store or wait until its in their rotation of games. Or you get certain play modes like exhibition mode for a sports game or something before everyone else. This is more akin to a trial over a demo like you said, and is a really smart move.

EA's is $30 a YEAR. $5 a month. Way affordable. Sony would look bad if they weren't comparable in price.

Yeah, if you do the year subscription it is only $2.50 a month.

I know, Xbox One's subscription is I believe $60 for a year of Live, no? Thats what I was getting at with the double paywall.

Even if it's a year, you are at $90 a year now, you get a lot of EA games for free, early access, and discounts on DLC and games for the ones you may have downloaded. It makes the second hand market look like a joke in comparison.

Aye, $60 a year. Free games every month, sales, etc etc. If people can afford XBL and the EA Sub on top of it, they'll be saving hundreds.

This is another step towards the whole 'gaming as a service' idea. I don't like this development. First we stopped owning games after they legally defined game purchases as licenses, and soon we won't even 'own' licenses anymore. This is only going to take away more and more rights from gamers. It could be possible for them to remove games from your subscription as they see fit, spoonfeeding us the entertainment they think we want.

Your rights to ownership were always flimsy,  but they also don't exercise them by taking it away from you out of nowhere. Except Sony and Linux...

Let me put this way, EA is telling you up front that the games on their service you don't own, you are leasing it for a fee, just like you lease Netflix movies or Gamefly games. Anything you buy physically you don't really own, but no one is taking it away from you. I would be concerned with online servers not lasting forever, but that's a whole other kettle of fish to talk about. In the end, if you don't like the service you can exercise your right as a consumer to not partake in it. The digital and physical copies still exist for you to buy.

That's the other thing, you have a choice too. They are not forcing you to use the service and they are not stopping physical production. At least, not anytime soon.

Actually, no.  You didn't have the ability to leave the first major area.  It was blocked a short way past that seer's hut.

I never tried to go past there honestly. Still, for an hour, the first area has about seven quests and a bunch of areas to explore anyway, that is still a good value for a demo.

And we see how successful 38 Studios was with "KoA".  Maybe the "hour-or-so demo" simply convinced people they didn't like the game!

I picked it up for next to (possibly exactly) nothing on EA/Origin and spent about an hour messing about.

Found the characters too cartoonish, the dialogue simply instructions or exposition, and nothing about the lore/setting to really grip me.

Still have it, but haven't played since that first time.

38 Studios' probably was they did too much at once. KoA sold very well considering it was a companies first game, but they were already working of a couple other projects when they didn't have the budget for it.

the only people that benefits from this deal are those who already have or would have bought xbox one anyway, anyone else and it is a slap in the face.

By definition, KoA didn't sell well enough!
