How do I get a certain character, say, Tali'Zorah, to say the most when with me? I was playing the Priority: Earth mission and when in the shuttle, Garrus took all the lines. When in the squad selection screen, I picked Tali'Zorah then Garrus. Due to Garrus hogging this on my last play-through, I restarted the mission then picked Javik first then Tali'Zorah. This time, Tali'Zorah spoke and Javik was mostly quite.

Does it have something to do with the two you select, or in the order you select them? Did Garrus then Tali'Zorah speak the most, because I chose them second when doing the mission? I hate it when I pick a squad with one character I do not like, so I pick them second, and they don't shut up.

Thanks for replying.

The mechanics of this always seemed a little weird to me. I understand that not everyone has something to say on a given mission, but they usually do. What gets me is that sometimes it doesn't matter whether I pick someone first or second; one squadmate will override the other.

Okay - this is based on my experimentation with all this in the past. I can't guarantee that it's correct... but I think it is.

The short version? You can't really control who speaks.

The longer version? If Garrus is speaking more than Tali on a mission, he will always speak more than Tali on that mission. He has a higher priority on that mission. I believe different missions have different squadmember priorities. (Every mission has 'Squaddie 1' dialogue and 'Squaddie 2' dialogue. Who gets to be 'Squaddie 1' and who gets to be 'Squaddie 2' is determined by this priority system.)

So if you want a specific character to speak the most on a specific mission, you're just going to have to try out other squaddies until you find one with a lower priority than the character that you want to be speaking.

It was more easily controlled in ME2, where loading the autosave at the start of a mission would usually switch the dialogue for the characters. Though there was less squaddie dialogue in ME2.

It also appears to be related to whether the squad mate is selected first or second. For instance, Kaidan should have a line of dialogue about Shepard and his biotics during the monastery mission, but last time I took him that line got lost. It may have had to do with who the other squad mate was, but it may have also had to do with the order the squad mates were chosen in. Generally, I believe the right hand squad mate (when looking at their icons on the screen) will get off lines before the left hand squad mate.

Garrus has speaking priority above everyone else in Mass Effect 3, except for character specific dialogue in missions like Liara on Thessia and Tali on Rannoch.

There was actually a list posted on BSN a year or so back which had the squadmate banter priority order for every mission.

Yeah, it's very messy on how squadmate priority works. Sometimes, it's who you picked first in the squad selection screen, but that is not always the case. Some squadmates have more priority than others such as Garrus and Liara. Friendship status also plays into this role and that depends on how many missions you've taken them on and how many times you've interacted with them.

T'soni overrides all characters unless another character has specific dialogue for whatever reason. I have also noticed that if you pick a squadmate first over another one, the dialogue is slightly different for both.
