Why not having the option for both?
Though if I had to choose I would say staff blast as it allows for more organic melee option as well if enemies get too close.
I'd be happy with either, provided the backhand spin staff attack were removed or significantly diminished in frequency.
I thought the hand blasts looked pretty good, but I thought it looked weird that the mage always held the staff behind them... almost like it didn't serve any purpose besides changing the element of the hand blast. TBH I thought the DA:O style was fine.

I like the hand blasts. I didn't have a huge problem with the staff aerobics in DA2, but they were still too flashy and I like the hand blasts better. And if everything else about DAI is new, it should have new animations too.
Either is fine, but the hand blast looked like it needed a bit of work. That is, if I'm shooting all this energy through space, wouldn't there be a bit of recoil? I mean there is little to no movement from that hand at all, and it looked kinda silly to me.
I want handblasts and close range staff blasts, though if it came down to one or the other, staff blasts. I want my mages equipment to actually feel like it serves some defensible purpose for its ridiculous size and shape.
I actually like the hand blasting better.

Magic has no mass, thus no recoil.

Magic + Physics = Looney Bin
I like the hand blasts more, makes it look like a mage is full of raw magical energy. I think they should be for ranged attacks and staves for up close combat.
You cant use both.you have to choose 1.and this topic is for helping bioware to decide what to put in game.
I liked the altered staff attacks we saw. Really gave some weight to the magic attack and made it look like effort was being put into the blasts. The hand blasts that we've seen looked a little silly, very "pew pew".
Hand blasts?

If you are calling me looney, then wow, rude.
Second, energy may not have mass, but the air around it does. That's why explosions leave things flattened around the initial blast area. Those thing weren't touched by fire, they were pushed by that incredibly fast moving air.

Lol sorry, no insult intended. I was calling the whole world looney
, but mostly me since I am applying physics to magic.
Indeed, the displaced air could factor into recoil, depending on if the magic (and thus the force) actually originates touching the hand, thus possibly applying some force (N3 Law) to the hand. If the magic begins the movement of force and heat outside the body (likely since casting fireballs doesn't burn your hand) then the oppositional force is simply going into air. It's hard to say since delving too deep into this leads to madness ![]()
Most likely from the perspective of Hollywood physix there should be recoil as everything possesses lots of recoil in Hollywood land (or sometimes none at all, depending lol).
I prefer staff. Besides the twirling amuses me.
Hand blasts for ranged auto attack, staff twerks...err...twirlings for melee...
I don't know, I'm not entirely convinced that 'hand blast' ability has been scraped. Why would they create a unique animation and then just scrap it? Perhaps the hand blast is the start of a chain?
The staff twirling is lame tbh.
Hand blast.
I wouldn't have a big problem with the use of the staff, but the gyrations and the twirling...it gets excessive when you see it over and over again. That kind of animation should be limited to something more significant than "I've been auto-attacking for a while."
